Wasn’t even either or. He basically did both. He died a hero and his words influenced kakashi and Naruto in death. But he also lived and became the #1 villain and even got the whole world to go to war against him. Then he died a hero again saving Naruto so he can become hokage.

He was extremely undervalued or at least felt that way but Rin didn't make him feel that way. She gave him motivation and a sense of purpose. So yes, it's ridiculous to destroy the world for the death of your crush, even if its from a peer, however his connection to Rin was far greater than we can imagine. He was a weak minded man with great potential, and madara took advantage of it, robbing him of what he deared most, turning him to the dark side, until the version of him who resembled who his younger self aspired to be showed him the way.
