I am a survivor of domestic violence, and left 1 year ago in a minivan with almost nothing... This song touched me more than I can say. I held my 4 babies tight and jumped from that window, and this song embodies the fear and the freedom, all at once. Thank you so much for this.
This song reminds me of the pain and the suffer that Syrian people have to walk through, the dark nights, the boats sinking, it's a terrifying situation I hope no one had experience. Keep refuges in your prayers, cause our "fair" world failed them so many times.
Grammy's deciding body really doesn't know what they're doing. Two decades in and she still don't have an award. Nominations is not enough to recognize her contributions, work and passion for music. Beats me, why do people who can't sing even half as good as her have rewards and she don't. Maybe in another lifetime Sara, when everybody can hear what your heart is saying, till then, you will always be one of the unrecognized bests.
The dichotomy is that she is very highly rated but still has no awards to represent her success. It’s a travesty, but her career and music will stand the rest of time when those around her fall by the wayside
With so much suffering in the world right now...the mental health issues so many have....this song should remind us all to be the one to reach out a hand...either to pull someone hurting to you or to reach out for help.
I married at age 20 it ended up being a very abusive marriage in every way I almost had a mental break down I was able to get out of the house with some help of my Dr who noticed what was happening . I was 25 when I got out I have suffered ptsd for years I have not even dated in 39 years fear of going thru it again . I want to say how much this song has helped me and encouraged me to take a leap of faith and I'd find a safe place to land . Thank you Sara and John for this song and how it gives ones like me to keep going . God bless .
Sara Barilles is such a talent in writing and performing. She really deserve so much more recognition than she receives. This one never fails to make me cry.
This touched my heart and soul. Survivor of domestic violence, I jumped with my babies over 25 years ago and still have the emotional scars. I have finally found someone who is my safe place to land.
She is a genius songwriter and has a glorious voice but the two of them together on this is one of the most heartbreaking hauntingly beautiful songs I've ever heard, yet such a soothing melody, like a lullaby to the suffering masses of the world... and a calll to the rest of us to be the ones that will catch them.
I didn't want to look at the comments because...well, you know...people are terrible. But then I read them. And I realized that these fans would only have love to give. Thank you for that.
I remember the old video of the Everly Brothers singing Mark Knopfler's "Why Worry," with MK ( and many others ) backing them up. MK looked like it was his greatest honor.
There is no soul that cannot relate to this. We are all built from the same blocks and our hearts hold the memories that music unlocks. Hauntingly beautiful.
There is something so reassuring about John and Sara's voices. This song is like a lullaby to one's inner child... perhaps I'm connecting to it more because it brings me peace after the last couple weeks. Thank you both for this duet.
"The ocean is wild and over your head and the boat beneath you is sinking." May God grant each of us peace and love to extend to our brothers and sisters. 😟😢 Our world is so broken.
People hear this song in different ways. But i listen to it when i feel... weak or lost. And it reminds me that I'm strong and I've survived everything life has thrown at me so far.
I do immigrant justice work full time, and I knew by the time the first chorus ended that this was about immigrants on the border and I LOST IT. I'm a puddle of tears. When John sang "imagine being in a building on fire and told to stand still." That's EXACTLY what we're doing to people seeking refuge. We must and can do better.
It is a good metaphor for refugees, but it also quite literally refers to those (mostly immigrants) who died in the Grenfell Tower fire in London a couple years ago.
Thank you Hope for the work you do....I work am a principal of a primarily Hispanic school with many undocumented families- I can imagine no better people to welcome to our country. I also lived in Honduras and witnessed the carnage in the gang wars first hand. Your name is soooo appropriate. Hope.

Having been raised by an alcoholic father who was brutal when drunk, so many times, my sisters and I would huddle together and scream while he beat our mother. It was only after becoming a grandmother and witnessing the innocence of my grandson that I realized what a scared little child I was. I suspect my sisters felt the same. We were each other's very first safe place to land.

I cannot explain the tears. Sara Bareilles has always been able to write to the parts of me that I don't like to admit that exist. It speaks to me in ways that I wish it didn't. It hits me in the centre, when I have become so used to dancing around the subject in my own mind. It hurts in ways I try to pretend I don't hurt.
Wow this comment Cuts Deep - now that U said it, i know exactly what U mean, she is a higher voice & better version of us, something Brillant & braver inside - with the hope of leading us to Our Better & Brighter selves, Ameen.
I love how it sounds like a gospel song from 18th century. I love how Sara and John's voices match each other naturally. I love the lyrics. I love this song.
When I started to listen to Sara's songs, I just can't go back to other artists anymore.. her lyrics are so deep and beautifully written and I can't find it to other artists
I keep playing this over and over. It is a beautiful extension of the idea that we all must "be the change we want to see in the world." The heartbreak of separated families at the southern border was, I understand, your inspiration, but the allusions to the Titanic and especially the World Trade Center attack brought tears to my eyes. The end harmony with Sara's extended notes will raise goosebumps.
Its amazing how much this song could mean to so many people. I am a single mom of an amazing almost 5yr little human...and im barely hanging on. I hope he always know i will be his safe place to land even though i cant seem to find mine right now.
I listen to your song and my heart breaks open. You've captured the pain and suffering felt in so much of the world today. 70 million displaced, mostly by violence, more than in any time we've ever measured in human history. "No one leaves home unless home is the mouth of a shark..." wrote poet Warsan Shire. Your words and voice resonate with her poem but also evoke the need for compassion and hope in a war-torn and chaotic world. Thank you.

Love this as we come into darkness into light here in Ireland. "Surely someone will reach out a hand " Be the light in the dark for someone who needs it. Dont judge its ok not to be ok.
Just found this song. My dad played it for me. 3 and a half years ago I left an emotionally and verbally abusive marriage. I grabbed my 2 kids, left all our worldly possessions behind, and took a leap of faith. Luckily my family was there to be my safe place to land. I will never forget that fear and it is so hard to put into words. THIS song described that day perfectly. Today I couldn't be happier. The sun always comes up eventually.
I've had such a block when it comes to writing - and next week I will tell my story for a nonprofit - I work a lot with houseless people. This appeared and I listened - and it opened up my creative flow. I am 71 and only found a safe place 5 years ago. I know how unbearable it can be and how amazing it is to feel safe - and so it is with my houseless friends.
@@sunnystreet4950 Thank you - I'm 71 and love music more than anything. Usually late at night I sit in TH-cam and listen to all kinds of music - this one came out at the perfect time for me.
I can't not cry through every one of her songs . And I mean ugly crying lol .She is a piece of magic on this earth and I adore her . Many blessings lovely lady you deserve all of lifes treasures with that talent !
Check out "We Americans" and "Bang Bang" by The Avett Brothers; I can't imagine anyone putting out one song last year better than these, let alone two.
I've been on both ends of this dynamic. When my world was falling apart and burning down, people reached out and offered me a safe place to land. I can only hope to do that much for others for the rest of my life, and hope I already have somehow.
I remember when I was younger asking my mom for an iTunes gift card so I could purchase the “Little Voice” album. Bareilles captured my attention at an age in which I couldn’t even relate to and or comprehend the complexities in her writing. She is truly an incredible and inspired artist and deserves to be put on display to marvel. I’m so proud of her and so thankful she released more music.
Such a beautiful song. I've recently become totally estranged from my family, my dad is abusive and narcisstic and I had to go no contact. I thank my ex boyfriend who still cares about me for giving me a safe place to land for now. So much for family. A total stranger I met online helped me a lot too.
It's so clear that she's speaking about current issues - wars in countries, the refugee crises specifically in my opinion, or the Mexican border. I like that she isn't afraid to state her view ❤️
@Franco Cavalli I think you're an asshole and part of the problem. Not a single human being in this world is illegal. Whenever you were born shouldn't defines your status. People like you are the problem in this world.
@Franco Cavalli I'm talking in general with all the countries. We should be free to go where ever we want. We are no different from people living somewhere else ...
@Franco Cavalli however in India, they accept refugees. As a country we need to do better at processing these refugee’s claims. You know, drain the sink.
@Franco Cavalli Shame on you Franco. In 2016 enough American voters did with Donald Trump as my ancestors did in the 1930s with Hitler: They chose to follow xenophobic fear-mongering, bragging, and lies. And elections have consequences. Donald Trump and his cruel administration has brought unbearable damage and the heart-wrenching suffering to the weakest of the weak, people seeking shelter. This touching song moves me to tears because it reminds me of how low we can sink, torturing those who deserve our comforting protection. And it is a reminder: We all can do better. You can do better, Franco! Life is about love and decency. Life is NOT what you see in the Trump propaganda channels, parroting his hateful lies every day. Hope you manage to escape that evil parallel universe. All the best to you!
This song touched me so deeply, after dealing with domestic abuse and still fighting my way through a divorce. People there for us mean the world when I feel like all has fallen apart. I sobbed listening.
I used to love the melody when I was younger, now that I’m an adult and experienced life, the lyrics here continue to tear me up. Yes! We all need help, and let’s all be that hand a hopeful stranger may need!
The song and the lyrics stirred every ounce of being in my soul. They will have meaning for everyone to relate to. Pure magic from two singing legends..
Beautiful to tears...🙏🏼 I would have left out the last "comes up". For me, it takes away a bit. But it remains one of my favourites. She is brilliant.❤

Soft Place to Land (lyrics)
When holding your breath is safer than breathing
When letting go is braver than keeping
When innocent words turn to lies
And you can’t hide by closing your eyes
When pain is all that they offer
Like a kiss from the lips of monster
You know the famine so well, but never met the feast
And home is the belly of the beast
The ocean is wild and over your head
And the boat beneath you is sinking
Don’t need room for your bags
Hope is all that you have
So say the Lord’s prayer twice, hold your babies tight
Surely someone will reach out a hand
And show you a safe place to land
Oh, imagine yourself in a building
Up in flames being told to stand still
The window’s wide open
This is leap is on faith
You don’t know who will catch you
Maybe somebody will
The ocean is wild and over your head
And the boat beneath you is sinking
Don’t need room for your bags
Hope is all that you have
So say the Lord’s prayer twice, hold your babies tight
Surely someone will reach out a hand
And show you a safe place to land
Be the hand of a hopeful stranger
A little scared but you’re strong enough
Be the light in the dark of this danger
'Til the sun comes up
Be the hand of a hopeful stranger
A little scared but you’re strong enough
Oh, be the light in the dark of this danger
'Til the sun comes up
Be the hand of a hopeful stranger
A little scared but you’re strong enough
Be the light in the dark of this danger
'Til the sun comes up
'Til the sun comes up, oh
'Til the sun comes up, 'til the sun
'Til the sun comes up
'Til the sun, 'til the sun

This appeared and I listened - and it opened up my creative flow. I am 71 and only found a safe place 5 years ago. I know how unbearable it can be and how amazing it is to feel safe - and so it is with my houseless friends.
Ruthie Benjamin i had a writer’s block too! But I got over it today, I posted on my blog. Writing in my safe space . I wish you all the best
@@NanaAmoasiwa That's wonderful! I should try blogging. It can be private at first. I used to write a lot. I hope you keep it up!
Ruthie Benjamin yes you should! All the best x
It’s so beautiful to see artists inspiring other artists or writers! I wish you the best in this.
@@sunnystreet4950 Thank you - I'm 71 and love music more than anything. Usually late at night I sit in TH-cam and listen to all kinds of music - this one came out at the perfect time for me.
why is sara so underrated )): she deserves more recognition
greenranger1998 > Who is saying she’s underrated? You’re the only one saying that.
I can't not cry through every one of her songs . And I mean ugly crying lol .She is a piece of magic on this earth and I adore her . Many blessings lovely lady you deserve all of lifes treasures with that talent !
Oh yeah I just find this . Is os wonderful and hopefully.
How are you doing?
SOMEBODY WIPE MY TEARS OH MY GOD THIS SONG JUST HITS HOME... ITS RAW.. ITS PURE... ITS BEAUTIFUL....
I know this came out last year but this song seems so relevant to today’s current situations going on in the world.
I feel the same. this is the song of the pandemic , protests, a president who is a threat to our democracy...
Check out "We Americans" and "Bang Bang" by The Avett Brothers; I can't imagine anyone putting out one song last year better than these, let alone two.
@@lincolnmaceachern2410 Bang Bang, might be Tracy Chapman's song...Bang, Bang, Bang.... it probably is.
Saw her last night in Portland, OR. Incredible. Can't get enough of this angel.
I'm on tears. This is so wonderful. Thank you so much, Sara and John! Much love! ❤
Me toooo! I have been in love with her work since Little voice
Such a beautiful song. I've recently become totally estranged from my family, my dad is abusive and narcisstic and I had to go no contact. I thank my ex boyfriend who still cares about me for giving me a safe place to land for now. So much for family. A total stranger I met online helped me a lot too.
…a stunning vocal performance by two of the finest singers to ever sing into a microphone. We want more!
That song is like "beloved" to my heart. I have all her albums, she's so deep, so talented and gifted. Their voices are magic together.
dearest sara no one can top u. youre an angel who sings and pours all of emotions there is for the world to hear.
@Franco Cavalli
Shame on you Franco.
And it is a reminder:
We all can do better.
Can she be anymore talented !! Her voice her lyrics are everything 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼♥️♥️♥️🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
That heartbreaking photo of the father and daughter who drown in the Rio Grande makes the message of this song all the more powerful.
This is a great collaboration and full of pure raw emotions and I enjoyed every second of it. John and Sara are such amazing singers..
Hello how are you doing?
They both have beautiful voices, but together...it's pure heaven.
She is an amazing musician, singer and composer. Her duet with John Legend is perfection. Their voices so compliment each other. Perfect
I used to love the melody when I was younger, now that I’m an adult and experienced life, the lyrics here continue to tear me up.
Yes! We all need help, and let’s all be that hand a hopeful stranger may need!
When letting go is braver than keeping....Oh my God! I am in tears right now. Love from South Africa
The song and the lyrics stirred every ounce of being in my soul. They will have meaning for everyone to relate to. Pure magic from two singing legends..
" When home is the belly of the beast "
Wonderful collab. Just perfectly written Sara 😍
Pure Magic. Art. Perfection. I'm a slave to your voices
Wow!!!! Gave me chills!!! You complimented each other so well...
Oh yeah they sooth each other.
How are you Jodee?
Hello Jodie
Beautiful to tears...🙏🏼
I would have left out the last "comes up". For me, it takes away a bit. But it remains one of my favourites.
She is brilliant.❤
This is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. Thank you for this song. This live version is the most powerful.
Oh yes I love this so much.
Stunning and hopeful
How are you?
This song, by these performers has touch my heart more than anything I have experience in a long time. I was crying by the end.
This song is so beautiful. Makes me want to cry. I feel their words flowing through me while I face my struggles. A safe place to land!
I love Sara's Bareilles' music, and John is terrific too. This song touched me deeply as so many of Sara's songs have.
They were amazing together in Jesus Christ Superstar live; but this duet of an original Sara song? Next level gorgeous!! Wow! Pure talent!
One of the most heartbreaking songs by two of the most talented voices of our generation.
I would never have put these two voices together but this song and their conviction is just perfect. I love this song.
