stoudbaker There is no copyright for words like dungeons or instances. Plus what is the point of calling them something different when every player is going to call them by their real names regardless.
iamreffering to"guildhest"etc.:)i wouldnt know what other games would call guildhests anyways.i dunno what the real names is or was.im just what hardcore people call a casual but really im a hardcore casual on ff14..to simplify or reword what i meant by copyright is that company A could have a copyright or something on something so company changed its name to avoid any possibility and orto be different(guilds as free companies which was exsplained whycalled freecompany, also fc is quicker to type than guild)....i just thought instances was just anything that get qued up and "guildhest'was just the name of type instances into learning scnerios as such as trials were mainly primal type fights..i hope you get where im coming from
***** Yep creativity is WRONG, lets not be creative and lets call the money GOLD, lets call guildhests INSTANCES and lets call yalms, YARDS. Ok so now we have GOLD in Final Fantasy, WoW CLONE! Instances??? WOW CLONE!!! YEP CREATIVITY IS WRONG AND SHOULD BE FROWNED UPON :D !!! WOOO
Major props to this guy for a balanced and down-to-earth review. Also, props for picking your audience. When you said "This video will be watched by FFXVI players." I sat there and thought ".... Busted."
***** It's all right. The condition is hard to spot. Science has only JUST discovered Bitchy resting face. They've yet to find. Bored Resting face and Happy resting face. Just help raise awareness. Every little bit helps.
Personally, I love this game, but my friend who is an mmo veteran (he's played every big name mmo since WoW, except Wild Star) found it decent but not to his tastes. This was my first P2P mmo (I tried WoW due to Star Craft 2 but a million technical issues that weren't the games fault and a start that feels like every Korean mmo dissuaded me from continuing). As soon as I started, I loved the game. The intro did a great job at hooking me and the tutorials and help boxes were extremely helpful. Each class felt completely unique and I didn't have to worry about being locked into one. The early dungeons scale in difficulty very well for someone learning how to mmo and in that regard the game does well. It's presentation is amazing, which helped get me into it, as I'm a sucker for that kind of thing. The armory bonus letting me level everything else faster was great as I didn't have to spend a very long time leveling other classes to try them out. The game just plain felt great. My biggest mmo experiences before this game were RuneScape, Flyff, GrandChase, and Guild Wars 2. My friend had a few major issues, a few of which I agree on, though not to the same extent. First, he disliked the crafting system, as he felt it devalued crafting. Everyone could craft everything, but in order to craft at high levels, you have to level all the crafting classes. There was no specialization. Second, the massive story dependency made alts a massive pain play. Also, the tutorials were too abundant for a veteran players, but they would occasionally have some unique mechanics, so he had to read them all or risk missing something important. He didn't like how staggered out all the new content is, and he also hates how limited each class/job is (as in Bard has to be a dps and PPaladin has to be a tank, there is no flexibility). Heavensward did a lot to fix up some of the issues and strongly improved the story, but there is tons of content to clear and grind through to get to it. It has a great endgame, though unless you're new to mmos, getting there is a pain. For me, the gameplay, story, humor, atmosphere, presentation, cross class system, and other key elements really outweigh the cons and I love the game. For my friend, the pros don't mean nearly as much to him and the cons are a lot more glaring, so he's unsubscribed and may or may not come back later based on new content (he's back on WoW for now). Hope that explained why I love the game and my stance on it.
I guess one thing to add to this is that the end game encourages players to buckle down onto a single job, which is in stark contrast to the openness of the bulk of the game. End game is a regular source of grumbling on the forums for this reason, which quickly blows up into all out tirades when players who chose to specialize into one class come in contact with those who chose to take a broader approach to raising jobs. Furthermore, after so many patches, inventory space has become a premium, as Final Fantasy XIV:ARR provides players with multiple reasons for keeping gear and little reason to dispose of older item sets. Players can change the appearance of items on their character to other items they possess using a glamour ability powered by consumable items called prisms. I believe the ability is unlocked in Mor Dhona. Just being able to play multiple jobs gives players a reason to hold onto items for other classes they might play later down the road. It's tough on some of the more dedicated players, such as myself. I've found that I'm pretty well locked into monk for the first time ever, whereas I used to also play warrior and scholar. Sooner or later I'll be forced to do something I definitely do not wish to do: Either start throwing old item sets I might never be able to retrieve again overboard or increase my monthly sub for more retainers. Given the story and limited gameplay options at the start, you can imagine how little I envy the idea of running a new character.
FYI the whole hand-over and actually typing out messages to NPCs was integral to Everquest. There you would often have to guess what the NPC wanted to hear to figure out what you had to give them.
My first real experience in the community was that of an 'accidental' Free Company invite. Members were like "Screw it, let him play with us" and they've been genuinely helpful to a new player. After that, I PUG'd one of the first dungeons - and was introduced to a person that spent the entire dungeon attempting to help our Tank be a less terrible tank (My Carbuncle was doing the majority of our tanking)
What I remember from ff14 before its re-release: 1) it allowed 10 hours of full xp, then 8 hours of diminishing returns of xp, then no xp for any gameplay after the first 18 hours each week - reset once / week. I really did not like to be told I could only gain xp for the first 18 hours of gameplay. What if I needed to take a bathroom break, should I shut down the game to save some xp gaining time? What if I wanted to explore the world or a new zone - managing time is not something I ever want in a game. 2) I tried to go the gatherer route for a little bit. There was a circle that had a line that first moved left to right then moved up and down. You had to click twice and the closer to the center, the higher chance you were to get higher quality materials. The problem is anything and everything that could potentially drop from that mining rock // plant would. You could not specify what type of material you wanted to gather. Trying to get a stack of copper ore for smithing would literally take hours and hours of mining - which would take up xp time from leveling the battling classes.
Actually the black mage needing archer thing does kind of make sense in final fantasy context. Bow weapons are often the other main weapons black mages in FF games with jobs. At least I think I'm remembering that right.
ethan .calkin You thinking WHM, the WHM in the earlier games could/would use bows and could do quite well, the main reason for BLM to have BRD as their off class is mainly just Quelling Strikes cause it reduces aggro, which they get a LOT of especially when multi-flaring all over the place xD
I love the crafting in this game. What wasn't mentioned is that you can do every single crafting class in the game on one character. If you level them all at the same time it costs you NOTHING and you can make piles of Gil. But yes... it can take a loooong time if you don't want to shortcut it by buying hand in items for leve quests.
***** It's not a piece of shit whatsoever. When I first started out, I was amazed by the visuals and storyline, as well as the awesome fights while leveling up. Upon reaching level 50, I was even more amazed at all the new content that became available to me. The game doesn't 'start' at 50, but it does get a whole lot better once you do hit max level.
To say the truth I've played so many mmos. Every expansion of wow which is currently the best mmo statistically. And right now I'm having more fun playing ff14 than wow. In terms of the fetch missions. Every mmo has them. Your basically everyone's delivery boy at the beginning
I recently discovered that the whole Bahamut destoyed the last world here's a new one thing wasn't much of a cover up. It was an in-game event in the 1.0 version, complete with the moon slowly falling down towards the land Majora's Mask style. People logged on and just stood still, staring at the eminnent destruction. It was... quite something.
I like 10, 11, 13-2 still. 11 was a real MMORPG, the design was simple, but the underlying system was deep as hell. It also didn't hold your hand and focus heavily on team play except for one class, which means the undesirable type of players are weeded out during the leveling process, and you ended up with a great community overall. 14 originally was okay, it seems like it was aiming for something bigger, but didn't really have the budget nor the time to make the game interesting enough as a launch version, and if you screw up the launch, it doesn't matter what grand vision you have planned years down the road. 14 ARR is basically a mix of WoW + Guildwar + storyline. If you like PvE it is nice, but there are a lot of questionable design and it doesn't change the formula of repeating the same dungeons to obtain a certain piece of item. It basically didn't try to do anything new, which while not a flaw, but also not a strength.
I agree. Though, that sad secret here is that people don't want anything new. They just want something "new".. you can find that anywhere in the entertainment industry. I think the lack of PvP and the lack of the ability to proclaim something as your main job are pretty big issues in the game. And that whole item level 80 cap battleground and horrible arena doesn't count. We need some real gear climbing PvP that is rewarding and filled with achievements.
Sean-Paul Rankin They've been saying they want to implement and improve PVP for a while, haven't seen anything worthwhile come from that yet though. Good to keep hope alive, but I wouldn't hold my breath. And the job system is a handicap because it promotes endless greed and jobs have no personality, There's a reason previous MMOs promoted having a main job (including FFXI) *Regarding endless greed:* Anyone who comes on the job they want to roll on can need on anything and get equal priority with someone who actually needs the gear for their main job. I wouldn't mind if there's some weekly lockout roll bonus that allows people to roll higher if they're getting something for their main job. Priority should be given to people trying to progress through the end game, which is why the current end game is almost completely locked down to newer players. Also I wouldn't mind something like the merit system in FFXI. And no, not to get determination on every job lol. I mean more like the weapon skill bonus which gives someone who cares about their job some bonus over someone who is just rolling it as a side thing. *Regarding no job personality:* You could probably add to the last part by allowing an exclusive ability or something for the chosen main class. Or at least a choice of optional but equally effective abilities for the "main" class, something with large raid utility. Right now everyone having cookie cutter rotations, with cookie cutter gear, and even with cookie cutter progression raid groups.. just makes the game boring and lack personality. One could argue that the relic thing is a means to pick a main job, but even that adds minimal personality and has a cookie cutter way of being upgraded. Another argument could be made that the weekly lockout gear (poetics right now) is another way to pick, but the average guy in turn 11-12 right now is already getting poetic gear for a 2nd class. I doubt they'll ever add true specs, since in a game like WoW one class can do 3 completely different things, while in FFXIV one character can do 10+ different things.. but it's still a bit lacking when you think about how Druid, Paladin, Priest, Warrior, and hunter account for more roles with different personalities then every job currently in XIV including the expansion jobs (those 5 classes include 3 tanks, 4 healers, 4 melee DPS, 2 casters, and 3 physical ranged DPS)
Sean-Paul Rankin i really really loved the switch to whatever.i know plenty of times alternating classes to help fc mates.example is me as a pld.ifihad a fcmatewho was a pld and needed help,i could just switch to dps.there boom, kazam problem solved,no need to relog on mule
I love how vitriolic the comments are even though the review was mostly positive and quite fair. "HOW DARE YOU SAY EARLY GAME IS SLOW AND GRINDY!!!" or "HOW DARE YOU NOT REACH THE LEVEL CAP!!!". It's really amusing, though John probably disagrees.
If you're shit at the game and don't even get close to halfway finishing it, any review of it is automatically unfair. I'd say most of it is justified. Overly vitriolic, yes; unjustified, no.
You >should< play every aspect of the game before making a review. Everything else your be unfair to the game. And this includes playing through the endgame content.
Quite clear those people don't read the episode 0 of this show really. John should've made his show's manifests emphasized every time he reviews popular games.
***** Because as a person who A) bought the game for it's full price and B) pays monthly for the ability to play the game they bought they'd prefer not to be told to pay MORE?
I'm not disagreeing with you. In fact, I apologize, I misread what you said. I think asking you to purchase a game(for full price) and continually pay for it is bad enough. For there to be a cash shop is bullshit.
Wait wait wait, arcanist isn't the damage dealer, thaumaturge isn't the healer and conjurer doesn't summon? the amount of engrish here is indeed present.
Virck Arcanist is a DoT damage dealer which can specialize in healing or more DoTs later (and also have a pet). Thaumaturge literally just means magician, so I don't see why that has to be a healer. I'd call flinging a fireball in someones face a "work of wonder". Conjurers work on the principle of using the powers of nature. Kinda like shamans in WoW.
Not sure if ti was mentionned, but when handing in quest items, you can right click the item and select hand in. I believe it is a selection based on some quests will give you a reward bonus if you choose to hand in high quality items.
I like this game and it is my first ever true MMO. I don't have friends and I would love to reach lvl 50(I am fairly close but I need friends to get me through some dungeons) and at least have a taste of it for once in my life. The community is good only for sometime I came across people who just shoved hate down my throat as I didn't do or understand what they wanted me to do as a Tank me being fairly new. Still I watched dungeon guides, listened to players who gave advice and I enjoyed it very much. Best dungeon experience when I was stuck at a dungeon because I couldn't get through a boss because I was doing bad and I was just about to give up on the game after constant hate and a major one just few tries before, I joined a group who were patient and taught me combo and walked me through even put up with my failures. At the end of the dungeon I was very happy and I seriously can't thank them enough for putting up with a noob like me. Still noob though but I might be getting there. Somethings do bother me but I still like this game nonetheless. Still need some option dungeon so that players can level their second class up. I am stuck doing the whatever I can do over and over again to level up my second class to become a gladiator. I don't know how to tag yet which would help my tanking much better. Seriously if you got a couple of friends even if they are noobs or veterans of the MMO you will enjoy this game but I think for the Noobs this game might end on level cap as raids are veteran thing in MMO.
[16:00] When an NPC asks for specific items, you can right click the item in the window which shows you a selection of matching items. Usually that's just 1 item, but sometimes you have the choice of trade HQ, which may or may not double the reward depending on the specific quest. (Trading high quality items for dailies at your grand company will double reward, especially usefull if the item is highly in demand and thus rewards FOUR times the exp and credits.) Oh, and the puns and references? They are indeed everywhere, even in serious cutscenes. th-cam.com/video/7LgG-SgOXhE/w-d-xo.html If there's a quest that isn't a pun of something, it's a rare quest indeed. Quick Synthesis failure rate depends on your stats, so the better your stats, they less fails. Get high enough stats and you never fail. Actions (skills) never grow outdated, exceptions aside. You will be using that lvl 1 action when facing lvl 50+ enemies, usually because they scale and are part of a combo chain or mechanic.
Another thing is the weakened state is in effect even after level 10 if you get resurrected if you die while weakened you get a Brink of Death debuff that gives minus 30% to all your stats
I am so very glad the development team streamlined the system for earning job classes with the newest expansion. No more dragging another job up to level just to have access to what you truly want to play. Want to become a Warrior? Level Marauder. Want to be a Black Mage? Level Thaumaturgist. This, combined with overall combat improvements and a story that feels less like a slog, leave the game in a proper stable state. Took a long time, but hey, there's fun to be had.
I had fun being a blacksmith/armorer and making amazing armor, witch i sold to other player and became really welthy, and stocking my frineds with great cost effect armor!
1:58 -- Intro 3:37 -- Graphics and Art Design 5:16 -- Music and Sound 8:02 -- Gameplay 26:54 -- Community 33:26 -- Cash Shop 36:47 -- Conclusion I post this because Laiquendi Johnson didn't do one for this video.
This video was helpful. I wanted to fill a FF itch I had while waiting for the GW2 expansion, but I'm not willing to invest enough to get through a slow introduction.
I said I would do so on your stream, so I'm actually doing it. Even if it's a couple of weeks later. It was quite a while ago, but want to thank you for making this video, as this is what finally got me to give FF XIV a try...and, led it to be my current MMO of choice. I picked it up just around the time of Heavensward's launch and I'm still playing it. I think what I particularly appreciate is that you have the tendency of (now, deceased) game reviewer I followed of doing a "warts and all" presentation of showing the great aspects and noting on some of the potential of the game....while also pointing out its flaws and potential problems....all while explaining WHY you hold the opinions that you do. As, despite many often neglecting all three, they are all equally critically important. So, again, I appreciate you having made the video and I also appreciate you having contextualized the aspects of the game into terms that led me to give it a try. Thanks.
FFXIV was my first mmo and I appreciated that hand holding through the main story. The game teaches you how to play so you are at least somewhat ready for end game.
I will freely admit that the main reasons I love this game are the graphics, the sound, and the nostalgia. I personally consider this to be the best looking game I've ever played. Now, graphics and art design aren't enough to make a game great, but in a game like this they're enough to make it a worthwhile experience to simply wander around the world taking in the sights. That said, I haven't played it much since hitting lvl 50 and basically seeing much of the world. The gameplay is slow and not very sophisticated, and none of the optional things to do are very appealing to me. I think my ideal MMO would be a combination of the gameplay and accessibility of WoW coupled with the aesthetics of FFXIV. Anyhoo, I do appreciate your upfront statement of your position right at the start :P
It was a pretty solid game in most ways, but it was the dungeons that drove me away. The first hurdle was when I hit the first mandatory dungeon. Several of the dungeons are integrated into the main story quests, and you can't continue those quests until you do the dungeon at least once. Well, I grinded around for about an hour sitting in the queue before I gave up. I switched from Arcanist to Conjurer, spent the time leveling it up to the level of the dungeon, then tried again, this time getting a dungeon right away. Unfortunately, this being my first time healing a group, I wasn't very good at it. No one likes a bad healer. This, combined with my desire to watch the cutscenes, quickly got me kicked. Luckily, I'd just joined a very friendly FC. They felt bad about my experience and offered me a more relaxed run through. Eventually, I became a savvy healer that could pull my own weight, especially once I unlocked Scholar. But new dungeons being forced upon me never ceased being an intimidating or frustrating PUG experience. I've done the whole dungeons and raids thing before. Learn the fights. Learn your class. That sort of thing. But it just feels completely at odds with the pace of the rest of the story questing experience and ruined the overall feel of the game for me.
Just to comment on the auto-translation dictionary. People who live in the Oceanic region and South-East Asia chose a server in the Japanese Data Centre as the unofficial English server (for better latency compared to NA). As the duty finder pairs you up with anyone from the Data Centre you belong to, these people are frequently paired up with those who can only communicate in Japanese. At the least, this feature helps them as not many of the them can communicate in Japanese.
32:01 ~ About the "Gil spammers having viable names", do keep in mind that the game itself offers a "Name Generator" for lore-friendly, normal names. As someone who's played over a year now, I can safely say I've not heard of anyone being hacked-so this is more likely an instance of bots using the name generator and not stealing accounts.
You know, at first I really didn't agree with you. I had been on a few months' hiatus from this game and still getting pangs of withdrawal. But now that I'm back into the game more than a year later, able to view it without the rose-coloured glasses I watched it with at first, I can say with certainty that I see and agree with what you're saying. It just took me having to try to explain this game to someone else that made me realise what I was saying.
I have to disagree on the pun quest names. The day I saw a fate to kill a giant crab boss called "I just died in six arms tonight" was the day I died laughing.
So, my girlfriend bought the Collector's Edition of FF14 when 1.0 launched, and gave me a trial code/guest pass to try it with her. My laptop couldn't run it, so I forgot all about it after I redeemed it. Then 1.0 got destroyed and the realm was reborn, and they were handing out free time like it was nobody's business, so I convinced her to return when 2.0 was launched. Curious, I wondered if she had been given guest passes for it, since those who had the CE for 1.0 had some CE content unlocked for 2.0, so maybe she was given new guest passes. Lo and behold, as it turns out, Squeenix converted my 1.0 guest pass account into a 2.0 RETAIL account, meaning that, according to their records, I had a full retail copy of 2.0. Without the game time, mind you, but still. Apparently it was the case where anyone that had a guest pass for 1.0 on their account automatically had their account converted to a full version for 2.0. So...there's that. Pretty kind of them.
I'm looking forward to the backtrack. The thing about the endgame is that the game is, for it's entirety, a "Baby's first MMO" experience with the low difficulty and forgiving mechanics. Then comes endgame like a huge brick wall. Although combat never really gets complex (rotations, procs, etc.) things like The Binding Coil of Bahamuth and Extreme Primal Battles have very complex/convoluted mechanics that are NOT in the least forgiving. A single person's mistake can and will destroy the whole party. And that's when the community review section of the video changes entirely... To some of us is a rewarding victory when it comes together, to others it's "bullshit and unfair" (because they HAVE to do it, right?) and others just take it too damn seriously... Like wiping to Shiva would kill their mother or something... On a side note, the FATE's "Decisive Battle" theme also makes me dismount every time even I get nothing out of the damn FATE... Also, I feel you mayhaps positively LOVED Urianger!
I will not lie, I have been waiting for this moment that you review this MMO from your standpoint. I have seen my share and it's always nice to look into the same subject from different points of view.
I had tried the free to play trial ONCE. I created the character, got to the starting town, did a 'few' errand quest, but got tired and called it a night before I ever left the safety of that town. The next day I couldn't even log in. I sent countless password resets and still could not get in...
wow, when you said at the begining you dont like FF franchise i expected a very bad review full of bitching, but i am suprised, great in depth review. GJ you got a subscriber
I did ARR a couple weeks ago and what he says still stands. The only improvements were that it was slightly shorter, and some dungeon mechanics are different.
@@twelvesevven4678 I'll be honest with you, considering my comment is 2 years ago I don't even remember what the hell I was talking about. So you may be right, you may be not. You do you sir.
Same here. I feel like people missed this but when I said "prefer XI" in PASS, it's not because I preferred XI. I couldn't stand that game, but I know XI has a ton of loyalists, and I knew the mechanics changes to FFXIV:ARR were not going to gel well with players of the first one.
I still like XI, have many fond memories of it, but now playing XIV for like 4 months..... I see what people are talking about. Subjectively, I still have a ton of fond memories with XI, but in an objective sense, I won't deny that XIV is the superior game
4:00 Aesthetics > graphics~ this game actually has subpar graphics~ but the aesthetics~ that is to say the art style~ details like shadows and graphical effects~ and overall very well put together engine make it look gorgeous~ if you look closer however you'll notice most of it is done in very low RES~ this means it's easier to render making it play so much better on almost any system~ That's just the tip of the iceberg when you look into how expertly this game is designed~ not going to say this is the greatest game ever made~ but this game stands on it's own when it comes to it's quality and very well crafted gameplay.
kongqianfu To be fair, I was used to ArcheAge, as it was the last World MMO I had played. That game had a combo elementalism system that let you do more damage by combining Ice and Fire spells. After I figured out how it was supposed to work, it was the first of my "Oh, I get it." moments.
ChaosD1 Chaos alot of you saying is what i fully agree people who say ff10 is bad i do not know why i loved it and ff9 was my favorite after that everything to me was meh
Wow, a friend told me the comment section was bad, I kinda feel sorry for nagging chaos about FF14 all the time, and how much I like it. Anyway why are people so upset he did not get to endgame? Not everyone has 50 or more hours to dedicate to a game, this is not the completionists. Saw similar comments for TERA. Though while end game can take anywhere from 2 weeks to a month(depending on playtime) in this game, TERA can take 100+ hours the same thing applies. I would not ask someone to do that if they did not want to, to be fair he did cover all the basis of the game, and he did it with good detail. End game content aside, the important part here is giving a gauge of what to expect along the way. A lot of people never make it to end game in an MMO for one reason or another. Weather it be boring gameplay, horrible community experiences, or the games world is uninteresting. End game to quite a lot of people is secondary as they have to put in HOURS of playtime to even get to there, and many people do not have the time. (Also despite being one of the first and the one to bug Chaos about review the game most, I did not play in it because they stopped accepting paypal and I could not reinstate my subscription in time to play)
Haha awesome review. A lot of the things you've mentioned in the video had me nodding and agreeing. Mostly on how the start is rather slow but after a while, you get hooked into it.
Decent review of the basics, but highly jaded. I would like to add that SE adds new content every 3 months whereas WOW will go over a year without a new patch. The sub is worth it. Also each class feels distinctly different with varying skill caps for each. The only pain is the 2.5 sec GCD, especially at the start of the game where all you have are 3 abilities to spam. The game is rewarding for the time you put in.
Truth be told, I haven't played a subscription based MMO since SWTOR, until I played the trial for this game. Yeah it does have issues and is a bit slow at first, but I feel it is a great honest to goodness MMORPG with content regularly added for people who give it a fair try (Final Fantasy fan or not). My biggest issue is the fact that there are more damage dealing classes than tank and healing classes right now, though the Heavansward expansion next year might fix that. (Looking forward to the Dark Knight Job class!)
i always thought it interesting when playing in jpn language they speak normally actually not much dialect changes. but getting to other languages it gets all crazy
I honestly do not see why people said the content from1 -50 is boring, I have been playing MMo for years and never have I ever reached max level on any game until I played FF14. I've played WoW, EVE Online, Maple Story, Guildwars 2, age of wushu, Mo Siang, Tera, ESO and so many more. IMY atention span is short but yet I the story and content from 1 - 50 in FF14 was so damn good, that I just played the game endlessly until I completed the story and now at lv50 i have even more shti to do and on top of that the expansion is coming out in a few days time.
+Max Chee yeah, this video made me very upset because after having played this game as my third MMO It is the only one that I have decided to keep playing and having played this game since Beta of ver 1.0 it is still a very solid game. They spent more time and effort in areas that are less ooh shiny and boob jiggly than other games to create more in depth contents like crafting and side questing. The story is pretty good, the voice acting sure lets face it people who are into JRPG's and Anime always turn on JP audio everyone was expecting the english voice acting to be terribad. But over all the game has a great community on certain servers and there is alwasy something to keep you busy if you arent a tryhard elitest who refuses to do anything but grind on raids and fuck side quests mini games and gathering and crafting etc. I so agree with you.
Hah.......I love your honest and (mostly) neutral reviews btw. I have played this since September of 03, I love it. I was solo going to 50, super casual, took me 2 months. Monk was my first 50, then lo and behold having healed in WoW as a resto drood I wanted to try WHM. Had a blast and took it to 50. What else is there, I thought, what about the other healer? Totally different style of healing, it has a healer pet also, 2 in fact for different situations. 3rd 50, and the summoner came along with scholar, 4th 50. Bard is next. Just the ability to not be locked into one class, the different playstyles, you can even just go fishing for the hell of it. Sell your rare catches on the market for extra dosh. The game really opened up for me at 50, I got bored halfway thru my first 50 and stopped for a month. Came back, finished, and was hooked. Made a few friends that i play with regularly, that made it 10x more fun. Being super casual, I'll log in expecting to get something done and totally blow it off to just hang out or help someone else. I'm ok with that. I still havent cleared the first coil, just got my first atma (reserved for my first 50, the monk). The zodiac weapon quests are tedious, and take forever, but once you have it, you get a sense of accomplishment. Not a whole lot of people will probably do it (and you dont even need it in the first place, its just an option). Any MMO will have a grind of some type, just a pick your poison kind of thing. I have followed FF since the 90's as well, even went back and played from 1 on up (the remakes, haha). Since 10, I think this one is my favourite. It is extremely polished. I agree also that for the most part, the community is great. I am always willing to give advice to new players (if they ask) and go out of my way to resurrect a fallen player that met their end in the field. One thing that wasnt in the video, was the subscription choices you can make. There are two, and Entry level which I think is 12 or 13 dollars vs. the Standard which is 14 or 15 dollars. The difference being the number of characters you can have on each server. Entry is one per server and the other is more /server (dont know exactly, I have been entry from the start). Good gaming, godspeed, and good luck! Keep up the good work! Look me up if you change servers! Leviathan, Maiyumi Moriyama
Just bought this yesterday, and it's the best MMO and FF I have ever played. All other MMOs I've tried (WoW, Wildstar, Guild Wars 2, Blade & Soul, and more) got boring really fast, but FF14 is fun and entertaining from the start. I've just beat my first dungeon and got to level 18. It's been a ton of fun so far, and the story is great (unlike those other MMOs that seem to have very little story on top of it being boring), and I love that there is actually voice acting from time to time. Good thing you told about needing to level up my archer class to become a Black Mage. I would have been pretty annoyed reaching level 30 and then noticing that. Gonna save those sidequests to my archer class for now, and just do the story with my mage. :3 So far I would give the game a 9/10. I have finally found a great MMO. The only thing keeping it away from that 10/10 is the monthly subscribtion. If I only needed to pay for the full game and add-ons, the game would be perfect. Though I understand that the monthly subscribtions are going into making the big patches, so I'm happy to pay them monthly. Overall, Final Fantasy XIV is my favorite MMO, and my favorite Final Fantasy on top of that (sorry FF9. You are great, but not great enough).
I subscribed to you because of this review. I disagree with lots of points you raise but, that was an honest and thoughtful review. The harassment around this review is dumb as hell. I do hope you make a follow up video though!
Neophyte Regglare The endgame? You know... when the actual game begins after you're max level, and start gearing your character and get access to most of the content?
I'm surprised you reviewed this title, I remember you mentioning your dislike for it last year. I haven't played since March due to my standard burnout of any MMO I play after a set amount of time, but this is the only MMO (besides WoW) that kept my attention for more than a couple months. The two things I took the most from XIV (besides graphics and music) is the sheer amount and quality of endgame content, and the crafting system. The trouble with the crafting system is it can take a long time to be able to consistently make HQ items, but once you get the certain crafting classes up to certain levels to unlock abilities, then it's much smoother.
I think the slow paced FF14 beginning feels very much like an actual Final fantasy game.
exactlIy feel like a lot of action rpg players gives ff14 a lot of crap
28:22 That...is actually quite a good complaint about Square enix. What IS up with coming up words for things that already exist?
***** copyright i'm sure plus it makes ff different from other mmo's
stoudbaker There is no copyright for words like dungeons or instances.
WOOO

anyone else notice that black mage rotation in the beginning?
Major props to this guy for a balanced and down-to-earth review.
Also, props for picking your audience. When you said "This video will be watched by FFXVI players." I sat there and thought ".... Busted."
"Kawaii desu sugoi time lucky fun explosion player base" - best quote ever. Great review. Very fair.
Does this guy ever smile?
No.

ChaosD1 i feel your pain
Given the story and limited gameplay options at the start, you can imagine how little I envy the idea of running a new character.
omg i have not heard the old voices in along time, i forget just how bad they were
FYI the whole hand-over and actually typing out messages to NPCs was integral to Everquest.
What I remember from ff14 before its re-release:
1) it allowed 10 hours of full xp, then 8 hours of diminishing returns of xp, then no xp for any gameplay after the first 18 hours each week - reset once / week.
I’m curious what you think of this game now in the present date.
Actually the black mage needing archer thing does kind of make sense in final fantasy context. Bow weapons are often the other main weapons black mages in FF games with jobs. At least I think I'm remembering that right.
After looking into it, it was only FF3 but that's probably where they pulled them from.
ethan .calkin There's also the designated BM character in FF2 having the bow as their ultimate weapon in the PSP and iOS versions.
Rydia could use a bow when you first got her in final fantasy 4... but your main whm, Rosa could use a bow also... And she also got the aim ability.
ethan .calkin You thinking WHM, the WHM in the earlier games could/would use bows and could do quite well, the main reason for BLM to have BRD as their off class is mainly just Quelling Strikes cause it reduces aggro, which they get a LOT of especially when multi-flaring all over the place xD
Aurora Night crossclass skills are needed XD
Great audio quality, professional speaking voice, a relatable/understandable, and the comment section isn't filled with irritating trolls. SUBSCRIBED
Relatable \ understandable opinions
I was rushing to get back to the video. XD
Javon Clary It isn't filled with trolls? Man, I need to try harder.
great review, very in-depth, no sugar coating; feels more objective rather than the all too common final fantasy brand zealotry that you mentioned
I get a chuckle thinking that they paid Carlos from the magic school bus to make some of the quest names.
Aged well
wait a second, you did not get max level? LMAO the game starts at 50
Jake Wini Too bad there's so much lame shit in the way then.
OOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Best Name sick burn brah
Jake Wini Then it's a shitty game. Why make a part that's shit to stick in front of 'the game'? It's moronic.
And the job system is a handicap because it promotes endless greed and jobs have no personality, There's a reason previous MMOs promoted having a main job (including FFXI)
*Regarding endless greed:* Anyone who comes on the job they want to roll on can need on anything and get equal priority with someone who actually needs the gear for their main job.
It doesn't matter if the items from the shop are useless or cosmetic, I pay a monthly fee to not have to put up with that bullshit.
***** Because as a person who A) bought the game for it's full price and B) pays monthly for the ability to play the game they bought they'd prefer not to be told to pay MORE?
Squelch Otron those are optional items though, they dont have to give you more free shit than they already do....
If you can't understand why that's retarded then the sentiment is lost upon you. I urge you to be more financially responsible.
I'm not disagreeing with you. In fact, I apologize, I misread what you said.
I think asking you to purchase a game(for full price) and continually pay for it is bad enough. For there to be a cash shop is bullshit.
this tread is hilarious.
Its soo hard to level up a second + job because before the x-pack dropped, you had to rely on XP groups to level up quick enough!
+MrYodi2007 Note that I have 4 jobs @ 50 before the expansion!
Wait wait wait, arcanist isn't the damage dealer, thaumaturge isn't the healer and conjurer doesn't summon? the amount of engrish here is indeed present.
Virck
Arcanist is a DoT damage dealer which can specialize in healing or more DoTs later (and also have a pet).
CONFOUND IT ALL!
Also you clearly didn't saw the "it's not Lupus" Fate, where you fight a giant Crab named Cancer
Also don't worry about the naming that was handed over to easter European branch so everyone gets confused.
[16:00] When an NPC asks for specific items, you can right click the item in the window which shows you a selection of matching items. Usually that's just 1 item, but sometimes you have the choice of trade HQ, which may or may not double the reward depending on the specific quest. (Trading high quality items for dailies at your grand company will double reward, especially usefull if the item is highly in demand and thus rewards FOUR times the exp and credits.)
Oh, and the puns and references? They are indeed everywhere, even in serious cutscenes. th-cam.com/video/7LgG-SgOXhE/w-d-xo.html If there's a quest that isn't a pun of something, it's a rare quest indeed.
Quick Synthesis failure rate depends on your stats, so the better your stats, they less fails. Get high enough stats and you never fail.
Actions (skills) never grow outdated, exceptions aside. You will be using that lvl 1 action when facing lvl 50+ enemies, usually because they scale and are part of a combo chain or mechanic.
"Rested system is really a Fatigue system"
Not really, when you are constantly overleveling your quest line without even trying.
Fun to be had doing the same dungeons just to level. -_-
Purely for a change of pace, I, a fan of this game, respect your opinion.
I'm just starting this, only up to like level 35, and GODDAMN is it hard to not get fucking lost.
I had fun being a blacksmith/armorer and making amazing armor, witch i sold to other player and became really welthy, and stocking my frineds with great cost effect armor!

I post this because Laiquendi Johnson didn't do one for this video.
You sir, have a golden voice.
This video was helpful. I wanted to fill a FF itch I had while waiting for the GW2 expansion, but I'm not willing to invest enough to get through a slow introduction.
I agree with you...I have no feelings left for Square Enix and Final Fantasy...
Thanks.
Thought this was a balanced and well documented review! Thnaks!
FFXIV was my first mmo and I appreciated that hand holding through the main story. The game teaches you how to play so you are at least somewhat ready for end game.
Speaking of FF9 (my favorite as well.), it's coming to PC.
ff4 my favorite
Hey I watched that Extra Credits episode just the other day!
Def agree with your feelings with square.
Great reviews. I hope you make an end game reviews of this game because people tell me it where the game really start.
Been waiting for this review since I subbed! Let's go!
I really enjoy this game myself. I just sadly cannot afford it anymore.
So you neglected to notice the "Disable all active help menus" check box its not so much a tutorial feature as it is well a help box.
If only the melee was fun.
Great review. Thank you for helping me shape my opinion.
that thm 'rotation' he's doing is killing me
I'm looking forward to the backtrack.
Nice rotations you are doing there :^)
Aidaen Pfau his fucking scrub can't even dodge properly when aoe casted
wow, when you said at the begining you dont like FF franchise i expected a very bad review full of bitching, but i am suprised, great in depth review. GJ you got a subscriber
Dude! IX's my favorite too. And I agree on everything you said about the series now...

Are you sure that wasn't the moogle's theme? Because they have similar melodies. The moogle's theme has been around since at least FF6
Oh boy... This didn't age very well...
Personally, I prefer the XIV way of teaching the game over the XI way of "Welcome to the game. Good fucking luck."
Same here. I feel like people missed this but when I said "prefer XI" in PASS, it's not because I preferred XI. I couldn't stand that game, but I know XI has a ton of loyalists, and I knew the mechanics changes to FFXIV:ARR were not going to gel well with players of the first one.
IKR. People often complain about there being too many tutorials in a game, but sometimes we need more than nothing XD
Vernon Smith i quit ff11 at 24ish as theif.easy prey is not easy prey
Easy prey is never easy prey as a DPS class in XI. That bugged the hell out of me.
Even with the hate for SquareEnix, it was a very nice review and it didn't fell biased.
What was up with your thurma rotation at the start lol
I had no idea how it worked yet.
ChaosD1 hahaha. I was kinda cringing in the beginning, but looks like got the hang it eventually.
kongqianfu To be fair, I was used to ArcheAge, as it was the last World MMO I had played. That game had a combo elementalism system that let you do more damage by combining Ice and Fire spells. After I figured out how it was supposed to work, it was the first of my "Oh, I get it." moments.
ChaosD1 yeah the combats pretty simple but with my dragoon and warrior I can strip the flash of most enemy's with the right combo rotation.
ChaosD1
Chaos alot of you saying is what i fully agree people who say ff10 is bad i do not know why i loved it and ff9 was my favorite after that everything to me was meh
OMG! I want to play a tiny black mage now.
Except the fact that u can easily find FATES while in gw2 its like a search and find situation
Kawaii-desu-sugoy-time-lucky-fun-explosion playerbase. Nailed it.
Not a bad overview, mostly objective and exhaustive. "Amateur Shakespeare night at the local frat house"? You literally said that.
Wasn't Uldah in Mabinogi, too? *Eyebrow raise* :D
I'm glad to see you actually did this review. Absolutely fun MMO that I'm still playing! I'm on Brynhildr if anyone is interested~
Haha awesome review. A lot of the things you've mentioned in the video had me nodding and agreeing. Mostly on how the start is rather slow but after a while, you get hooked into it.
Forgot to mention, somehow I got to this video after watching some spider videos.. Wtf youtube?
CALLED IT!!!! SO CALLED IT!!!
Voice in the back: No you did not! Your guess was that it'd be Final Fantasy 11!
I WAS CLOSE ENOUGH!!!!
the community combined with the end game makes it well worth $15 for me. i would even pay $20.
The game is rewarding for the time you put in.
when you hand over things you can just rightclick or hit square if youre on ps4, to automatically grab the item out of your inventory.
SE likes to keep your money if they make a mistake with your purchases. Please keep that in mind when you decide to pay for this game.
Yea, I'm dusting off my tanking boots in preparation for dark knight. It's going to be awesome.
Sean-Paul Rankin Hell yea brotha.
Dark knight's going to be the best! I'm so glad they made it a tank based class
i always thought it interesting when playing in jpn language they speak normally actually not much dialect changes. but getting to other languages it gets all crazy
Colette Yamazaki i like this review! i play the game already but very nice overall
Hey Bro, you could show us the time of each topic of the video.... i was only looking for gameplay and.... was a pain to find it
I honestly do not see why people said the content from1 -50 is boring, I have been playing MMo for years and never have I ever reached max level on any game until I played FF14.
***** this is nice to hear thinking about getting it
+Max Chee yeah, this video made me very upset because after having played this game as my third MMO It is the only one that I have decided to keep playing and having played this game since Beta of ver 1.0 it is still a very solid game.
Thank you for the info.
To be honest, getting to max level is only like 35% of this game. Once you hit max there are a ton of things to do.
Aesir Jotunnkin Treasure Hunting, Clan Hunts, Gold Saucer, Housing, Raids, Extreme Trials and much much more
Hah.......I love your honest and (mostly) neutral reviews btw.
Leviathan,
Maiyumi Moriyama
So far I would give the game a 9/10.
I do hope you make a follow up video though!
your reviews are great good job man
in about 60 days i got a rogue to level 50 ninja and ya waiting for the new heavensward
Dayum! is the end game really worth it btw?
idk who that is
Abdulrahman Majash Yes the endgame is what makes this game worth playing at all.
i have no clue who or what that is
Neophyte Regglare The endgame? You know... when the actual game begins after you're max level, and start gearing your character and get access to most of the content?
Did anyone else have to stop and google the ff 10 sand worm to remember what he was talking about?
I'm surprised you reviewed this title, I remember you mentioning your dislike for it last year. I haven't played since March due to my standard burnout of any MMO I play after a set amount of time, but this is the only MMO (besides WoW) that kept my attention for more than a couple months.
The two things I took the most from XIV (besides graphics and music) is the sheer amount and quality of endgame content, and the crafting system. The trouble with the crafting system is it can take a long time to be able to consistently make HQ items, but once you get the certain crafting classes up to certain levels to unlock abilities, then it's much smoother.
