Air resistance is the main factor determining your top speed, since it scales with your velocity squared. And since the air resistance isnt dependent on the weight of your vehicle, the weight isnt all that important for your top speed. Weight does come into play through rolling resistance. All of this is only true for constant speed obviously

Weight reduction does very nearly nothing for top speed. This is because top speed is determined when the frictional forces (drag in particular) equal the force produced by the engine. When these forces are equal, acceleration stops and the vehicle is at top speed. Reducing weight does not really affect top speed -- it only affects the *rate* at which you reach top speed. The only slight gains to top speed would be from the reduction of rolling resistance. This is how the Bugatti Chiron still has a record-setting top speed, despite weighing as much as a Ford F150.
