@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Gary, I drilled holes in the ones I made just to ensure proper drainage and not let the wood saturate. They've lasted 3 years here in sw KY zone 7. thanks for your excellent work!
When is the best time to start seeds outdoors like in your video? I’m zone 6a so lowest temps at night about 43 & mid 40-60 days for at least 2 weeks Thank you for making these awesome videos for us!
Thats a good idea. I have a pool sitting actually. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
Hi Gary, I was wondering did you drill holes in your flower box? Also the soil you used from your yard doesn’t it have soil life since it’s from the earth will that soil life impact the new seedlings or transplants in the flower box? Just wondering I am super new at all of this.
Hole are needed or in this case there are gaps were wood is screwed. Earth will have soil life. It wont harm the seedlings. The key for flower box soil is water retention. So I add a lot of peat to mine. How long should a bottle of the liquid and granular fertilizer last for the growing season/year? Also, what do you recommend doing when using this type of growing system as a beginner but want to transition to a more sustainable garden style using compost and other things for the next year? What do you recommend doing now to prepare for that? Thank you for taking the time to teach those of us who are beginners just starting out gardening.
Sustainable is best built on making your own compost. That can be added into container mixes and works well. How much of the bottle and granular you will need depends on garden size. But I would say 2 bags of gran and 3 liquid. They dont last long. Casting is great. Ill be doing that in future videos in this series. I didnt want to overload this one. You will still need water soluble. Casting add good stuff like microbes and growth hormones. Is the wood you used 2 x 6 x 6? If you said the size, I missed it. please wear a mask when handling the dusty stuff, that can be wicked on the lungs :)
Its not 2 inches thick. It is for fencing. It is a lot thinner and used to make fencing. probably 1/2x6x6. Ask for fencing board at HD. That used to be that way when arsenic was in it. That was stopped about 20 years ago. It is cut freely at HD and Lows. However my face is close, good idea. Thank you Gary, received my order last week and im going strong with my seed starts. Question about this flower box, i already bought my wood, using cedar, and making a bit larger, however, i just realized you are using pressure treated wood. uh oh, mine is not. What are pros and cons of using NON pressure treated wood. Want to use these boxes for veggies (lettuces) and maybe flowers in the future. By the way love your videos, using all your advice and soaking up all your knowledge!! Not a first time gardener, but want to be a better gardener this go around at new house. Thanks again
Cedar is pretty good. It naturally resists rot. Some people dont like pressure treated as they feel in could leach. That was concern decades ago when it was arsenic treated. Now it is copper. I dont worry about it. Pressure treated is cheap and lasts very long. Thanks for the order too. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
Great, thank you for your quick response. I used pressure treated for my raised garden beds👍🏻 Guess I will just deal with these since they were already ordered. Thanks again for all the invaluable info 😃 stay safe

Gary, when you fertilize every 7 to,14 days, is that the same as watering every 7 to 14 days? Or do you use water only during the, times when youmare not fertilizing; e.g. week 1, fertilize;,week 2 water; week,3 fertilize, week 4 water?
No. I didnt go over watering because it varies so much. But when cold out 1-2x a weeks as plants get large. When warmer 2-3. More if it doesnt rain. So you see it varies. When you fertilizer it counts as watering too. Interesting video but a bit vague. I mean what exactly does he mean by "earth"? Does he mean dig something out of your back yard? Does it include the cheap topsoil at the big box stores? Also, I don't think I've ever heard a gardener not recommend putting compost in ANYTHING...except seed starting mix. Is it because he's just trying to show how cheap and easy it can be done, and doesn't want to use the "black gold" that is compost?
Yep earth from the backyard. You can add topsoil too. If you have compost use it. Basically you have options to fill it. Cheap works. High end stuff works. Your own blends work. Everybody, please listen and wet your potting soil before filling containers! I built myself a huge container (basically a raised bed on legs) with a mesh bottom and filled it half way up with fine shredded wood, and the rest of the way with the $3.50/1.5 cubic foot bag potting mix (Greensmix Nursery Mix, don't buy it, it has a bunch of pieces of plastic in it) which is broken down wood and some perlite. All the potting mix was dry and I had a terrible time trying to wet it until I just scooped it out in sections and mixed up a tub of mud to mix back in.

I like your homemade flower box. Need to drill some holes in the bottom?
Maybe. But I dont think so cause of the gaps in the boards.

I’m zone 6a so lowest temps at night about 43 & mid 40-60 days for at least 2 weeks
Thank you for making these awesome videos for us!
If not concerned with appearance try 4ft baby pools. I'm trying onions in 2 of them.
Thats a good idea. I have a pool sitting actually.

They dont last long.

so you don't add perlite or vermiculite any more in potting/container plants? Do you use them in seed starting mixture?
Not anymore for outside. If I make my own seeding starting mix it is peat and vermiculite.

I would blend it with so fresh soil and amend it

Just built 4 of these today. Was thinking of planting cucumbers/pole beans to trellis. What"s the max # you would put in a box? Have learned so many things from your videos, always so informative :D
Hmmm Nice on the builds but cukes would struggle in the box. THey have massive root systems. Beans might work. 3 seeds spread out.

@Gary Pilarchik ...I set up my container mix using worm castings....should I still add another fertilizer??
Casting is great. Ill be doing that in future videos in this series. I didnt want to overload this one. You will still need water soluble. Casting add good stuff like microbes and growth hormones. I would probably just toss in some inorganic too for the bigger plants.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thank You! Love the education. I will visit your store.
Going to do the "cut and come again" with the mix i ordered from you
Cedar is pretty good. It naturally resists rot. Some people dont like pressure treated as they feel in could leach. That was concern decades ago when it was arsenic treated. Now it is copper. I dont worry about it. Pressure treated is cheap and lasts very long. Thanks for the order too.

Hey freind what is better peat moss or top soil
Top soil alone stinks. 50% peat and 50% topsoil will work. Peat alone is not good either.

Can earthworms be added? Also, can these boxes actually be attached under the windows of your house? How would you do that?
Worms arent really need in the flower boxes. In larger containers you could. This box is heavy. Now sure how you would attach it. You could make 2 smaller ones I am sure

Whenever I cut or harvest my lettuces, the aphids attack the growth points. I hate that.
Hmmm. They smell it. So I sell peppermint oil at my shop. It is good at masking scents. Or make a soapy water spray and keep it in a spray on hand. Just hit the new cuts for a couple days. It kills aphids

Yep. Thanks.
Thanks for the info. I did mix a bit of peat moss with water, it does float and a pain to mix. I cant imagine a huge container full of mix.
That is very true dry peat. Once initially wet... now issues
