    Since I bought the Megadrive Mini back in September, my daughter enjoys playing Bare Knuckle 2 with me. We call it "Kicking the Homeless Out of Disneyland" because in the third stage you go through a theme park with a castle and beat up guys sleeping on the benches. So often we'll ask each other, "Do you wanna kick the homeless out of Disneyland?"

    I had a SOR patch on the Java version on my old sony walkman phone, I never completed it but I remember it being fun, I probably still have the phone with it installed somewhere, it worked pretty well because it was before days of touch screen, there was like a circle control which had button clicks used for direction, and just as you said in the video double tap to punch, it felt quite fluid on an actual phone.

    I guess the reason why the Sega CD version slows down is that it loads chunks of levels from the disk (before GO sign).

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It shouldn't do. The Mega CD has enough memory to avoid that. Could be the reason though, I guess.

    You can't go wrong with the original. Great video again, Mark. I first played the original Streets of Rage on a (Mega Tech? I remember the machine also having Columns and a couple others) arcade cabinet at a 7-11 (former; it's now a "Circle K") that was very close to an uncle's house. I didn't know anything about the Genesis-based arcade systems, so for a long time I assumed the home game was an arcade port. And this even though I had seen the game in magazines and was familiar with the Playchoice 10, which the local bowling alley had, but I never made the connection that the arcade machine was based on the Genesis until much later. Either way, I enjoyed Streets of Rage 1 and still do, even though I personally ended up getting SoR 2 first and prefer it over the original.

    I played all versions except the Java one. What an amazing surprise! I remember that Mega CD version doesn't have two players mode, like Master System. Game Gear is an amazing port it have a quite good collision detection too (Master System is horrible in this aspect), and Megadrive port is the only beat em up in 16 bit consoles that can show until 12 enemies in the screen, thanks to the small sprites size.
    Amazing BotP Mark! Loved it!

    I'm glad the Sega CD showed some restraint and kept the Genesis music. It's still my favorite soundtrack from the series (2 comes super close, but 1 has more of a laid back feeling to it). It's almost like the Genesis sound was made for the music in this game rather than the other way (a)round.

      havent checked my self, but if Sega CD is based on the USA cartridge version, then those slowdowns make sense when its present in the original USA version (its have same title). So they property have fixed that bug very late for the JP release. So the Sega CD seens to been pretty less a direct port with little effort (unlike Final Fight).

    I admit, I have not played SoR4 yet because of my late anxiety stuff due to another massive update coming for one of my beloved games but one thing I will admit, I played the SoR games on emulator, was hardly good at this, only finished SoR2, but the ost in the first game, is definitely meorable and while not as fluid, it was the start, of a great saga.
    And I am happy to know this game was created in the very month of my birth. So this game also hold a important piece in my heart
    Before my sleep for the update I have been waiting a whole set of years, this will be a good way to sleep. Let's go!

    • @AllenJohn

      SOR4 is a short, good smooth game to distract you. The music or the Ost matches the inention and feelings of the games of yester years. If you ever would give it a chance, you will not disappointed, the least you would feel is "time well spent". If you have a friend or significant other, ask them to join you, and share an experience something that SOR was famous for.

    Pretty impressive for it's time in it's 16-Bit form, arcade level on-screen enemy counts on a home system. I think it was a bit too derivative to get my attention so I never played any of the BK/SOR games despite owning them many times over via various collections, I'd probably totally burned out on the 'urban' beat em' ups sub-genre so I was heavily into the fantasy alternative, Golden Axe instead.

      Actually, US Gold computer ports came out from their main console, the Mega Drive too. One such example is Space Harrier 2. Sonic 1 was also about to get Amiga, ST, ZX Spectrum, CPC, and C64 ports too, but SEGA just said no to US Gold by then sooooo.

      It certainly would've been interested had SoR appeared in arcades, but I think a big point of the game was "you can't play this anywhere else except for the Mega Drive" as a killer app, since they were already pushing how good their arcade ports were and needed some exclusive hits. The SNES port of Final Fight was a total let down, so in hindsight it seemed to have been a good move.

    there was an arcade version running on the mega play system board, but like every mega play based arcade game it is Identical to the genesis version, so you aren't missing out on anything. there was also a tiger handheld version, but it is a reskin of their double dragon handheld, and is extremely rare. nobody should have to pay thousands of dollars for a reskin of a game that's usually available on the cheep. unless you are a collector of these handhelds for whatever ungodly reason, I suggesting you don't even bother with that one.

    I believe the Game Gear was technically more powerful than the Mastersystem.

      It has stereo sound and way more colours. In fact it even has way more colours than a Mega Drive.

    i believe there was an arcade version of this game from megaplay.or megatech.systems multicart
    www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=9470
    www.musee-des-jeux-video.com/fr/sys/5-mame/1/m/8
    the soundtrack was diffent and more deep bass
    test this on a mame emulator from an original xbox in coinops ...there also megatechs version of streets of rage 2 .and golden axe 2 .the soundtrack is more arcade deep.
    does not sound like a tipical megadrive for sure..

    Only 25% for the Game Gear version from French Magazine, Player One?
    That's harsh
    They gave the Master System version 80%

      Very harsh. The GG version isn't that bad.

    The oddity with the regional title of the Japanese Mega-CD version seems to apply not only to Bare Knuckle/Streets of Rage, but also to The Super Shinobi/The Secret of Shinobi. I guess Sega simply went lazy, must have confused a lot of Japanese gamers with that. Then again, you played the Streets of Rage variant of the Game Gear version instead of the Bare Knuckle one for some reason.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, I don't have the Japanese Game Gear version. Whish I did. The box is cute.

    • @WeskerSega
      @WeskerSega 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RetroCore Well, the game title works depending on the region of your Game Gear, no matter which cartridge from where you own. For example, if you have the European Streets of Rage cartridge (like in my case) and insert it into a Japanese Game Gear (I myself have both an European and a Japanese Game Gear), it will display Bare Knuckle. Same thing if you do otherwise. And it's the same with the second Game Gear game. It's also the same with the first Mega Drive game, while in the second Mega Drive game it depends because there's two variantes: the Japanese and European version on one hand, and the North American version on the other.

    The Java port showing here is in Chinese. Sega also released an odd 2D demake of House of the Dead on Java phones.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, this is the Chinese version. Finding Japanese versions of old Java games worth bothering with is next to impossible.
      There are two House of the Dead java games from Sega. One like the arcade and uses motion controls and the other you mentioned. Both featured in my BOTP House of the Dead video.

      Yup. It was part of a compilation that also featured Golden Axe, Revenge of Shinobi, Columns and Super Monaco GP. I beilieve it was bundled with the Mega CD, at least in some countries.

      Since it isn't possible for me to record the 3DS game in 3D then all we are left with is the Mega Drive game. Besides the 3D aspect (Which is good) the game is just the Mega Drive rom.

    why does blaze sound like that in the sega cd version? she's sound like if she's played by skate trying to do voice. how come they haven't used the voices from the genesis version that weren't even compressed in genesis quality?

    It's odd how unoptimized a lot of Genesis to Sega CD ports were. It almost leaves you wondering why they even bothered, considering that anyone with a Sega CD would have already had a Genesis anyways.
    The Master System port is absolutely impressive for the system. Heck, if my eyes don't deceive me, the framerate seems a bit above the Genesis original. Too bad for the wonky collision detection though.
    Too bad the Game Gear port was so cut back compared to the Master System port. It's nice they took advantage of the expanded color palette and link cable for 2-player co-op, but there's no technical reason it had to be missing so many stages that the Master System had, at least not to my knowledge.

      Many games ended up running worse on the Mega CD than the Mega Drive, despite the former having a faster 68000 CPU. I Think it has to do with the way the two boards had to work together, some weird bottle neck.

      Maybe they wanted to sell the Game Gear version on a smaller cartridge size?

    • @MistaMaddog247

      It was part of the 4-in-1 collection that they included with the Sega CD along with Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective or Sewer Shark. You can tell they went with shovelware instead of quality games....

    • @WeskerSega

      @@RetroCore The Game Gear version is a tiny 2 meg (256kb) cartridge, so it could be. The Master System version on the other hand is a 4 meg (512kb) one. Fortunately, with Streets of Rage II, both the Master System and the Game Gear versions were done on 4 meg (512kb).
