This took home the Oscar for Best Visual Effects as you can see as the VFX artists put a lot of time and patience into making this movie happen.
The director volunteered a lot of his personal time into doing vfx himself, I've heard.

Should've won best picture. Movie of that year, hands down
While it looks amazing i feel like it more so won for the level of quality for the budget, American Godzilla or kong x Godzilla looks better cgi wise but this move has a good story unlike the others, it actually has an atmosphere and theme rather than the marvel aesthetics that everyone has been doing over and over, it also has nostalgia
Fun Fact: So the title Minus One comes from the fact that this is set right after Japan lost the world war, politically economically and socially they are at their absolute lowest they have ever been. And then Godzilla shows up. And THAT’S the Minus One, because just when they thought they couldn’t get any lower, in comes Godzilla.
Also, Godzilla‘s atomic breath is inspired by how nuclear reactors work. His back plates are like cooling rods, and when they are pulled out the “reactor“ inside him starts to overheat and as he’s inhaling deeply he’s stoking the fire inside of him, then when the plates drop back in it causes the chain reaction which unleashes his breath. Just like what happened at Chernobyl.

The thing I loved the most about Godzilla Minus One… the sound. They used music that was exactly like the old school Godzilla movies and the voice of Godzilla was exactly the same too!
They used the recordings of the original roars and footfalls from the first Godzilla movie from 1954; but played them in an echo chamber and recorded them again, to get that awesome reverb.
The SFX are so good. As for the music, I’m really torn - love hearing the Ifukube classics, but when it’s the versions with Mothra’s theme (Ginza) or the prayer to Kong (final naval battle), it’s distractingly evocative of the other films.
She survived because Godzilla's cells embedded to her, that's why we see Godzilla regenerating right after the hospital scene.
Kinda like radiation somehow, it benefits her by a struck of luck

@@prashantgurung2635 Nah....the director talked about it. It's a radioactive infection that will eventually mutate or kill everyone it taints. It's actually a terribly sad ending for them, but I'm kind of hoping he rethinks that. They're going to make a sequel with another monster and hopefully they either find out the infection won't kill the people or they find a cure. It's just so depressing to think about all those people who survived facing a slow, painful death afterward.
"Godzilla: Minus One" should have garnered an Oscar for best foreign film. To me, this film is right up there with "The Seven Samurai."
Remove Godzilla and this is still an amazing movie. Acting was great, written was perfect, characters 3 dimensional and engaging. This is totally a shot over the bow for Hollywood to remind them that THIS is how to make a movie.

Absolutely agree. This movie is about redemption and the triumph of the human spirit. Replace Godzilla with another monster or catastrophe and it's still a great film.
Seeing this in IMAX when it came out was amazing. All those roars and stomps and booms shook the whole theatre and it was a fantastic movie-going experience. Definitely my favorite of all the Godzilla movies.
Hands down the BEST Godzilla movie I have ever seen! The icing on the cake was the original music score from 1955 & the terrifying Epic look of him! Not to exclude the Nuclear Blast from his Atomic breath.

That, plus she really couldn't have made it in too. It is one thing for a woman to send somebody flying in opposite direction, but dragging another person without a running start and a tackle in that short amount of time is physically impossible.

Godzilla Minus One was the movie Godzilla fans had been waiting for. Absolutely amazing visuals despite a low budget, and produced by true fans from the country where the character originated. Japan reclaimed their most famous monster by making an instant classic at a fraction of the budget Hollywood would have spent.
Not sure if you didn't look into this or not, but this was made with 15 million dollars and earned 150.9 million dollars. The mark on Noriko's neck is actually G-cells (Godzilla Cells) and this as confirmed by the director in an interview.

A movie like this deserves all the awards. Best actors, special effects, music etc. Look at shin godzilla back in 2016 sweeped the Japanese box office big time. Such a fantastic movie Takashi yamazaki deserve all the love. Y'all should watch his other movies like the always sunset on 3rd street trilogy 0:25 well your just gotta get use to that. This movie is a semi reboot to the original 1954. They didn't have king kong in mind back then and wanted to express the horror of nuclear weapons. 2:39 don't get it twisted this godzilla and the monsterverse version are two different godzilla's. This one is more in line with the original portrayal. Attacking humans cause they threatened him. 3:43 that's a rule godzilla doesn't eat people and he never has. He's just biting them and throwing them. 18:12 it depends on the version. Sometimes he'll heal quickly Sometimes he'll need a while to heal. 35:31 it's called atomic breath or heat ray in this movie. 46:26 this ending is giving you two things
1) Noriko has a peace of godzilla's cells on her neck. Meaning something bad might happen.
2) the final shot of godzilla's heart beating is a reference to 2001 godzilla mothra and king ghidorah giant monsters all out attack or gmk for short. Pretty much telling you that he'll be back for a sequel if yamazaki decides to return.

I think this Godzilla is lashing out because he's angry that got a nuke dropped on his head. If I got caught up in some sort of weapon that hurt me and then mutated me I'd be livid. Both times before he only attacked in response to what he saw as attacks. (The bright light in his eyes and getting shot in the face.) He saw Shikishima sitting in the plane and just kept walking by. The Odo Islanders had lived there with Godzilla showing up occasionally and they weren't all dead. I think maybe if there's an external threat to face that we could make a truce with him.

I'm from Japan, and we rarely consider godzilla as a hero. Heroic images of godzilla including monsterverse has always been influenced by Gamera.

"G's" skin is turning white because the decompression is making gas bubbles in his eyes, muscles, tissues and blood vessels expand and bulge out--he ain't dead yet but he sure as heck is hurting.
This Godzilla is so freaking awesome. It’s looks so real. Incredibly well made. And so emotional. Truly feeling the horror of this Godzilla aszzhole!
You don't just get sick from decompression. There's a famous story about a group of oil rig divers who would go to the bottom of the sea in a diving bell to make repairs, then have to take hours to rise again safely. Someone opened a door before he was supposed to and it repressurized the bell instantly, killing everyone but 1 and literally shoved a full grown man through a 24 inch door. No pictures exist but the rescue workers said it was the most horrific thing imaginable. Also, that's what happened to those fish that would be floating wherever he was appearing. They got caught up in his wake and pulled to the surface too quickly and it killed them. It's supposed to be foreshadowing of the plan the scientist came up with.
The diving accident was on a rig named the Byford Dolphin. Look it up....it's a nightmarish scenario.

When Noriko got blown away after knocking him into that alley, seeing you two get pissed off, all I could think of was "the end of this movie is gonna kill these two". Great reaction ladies!
I love that they didn't see it coming. Most reactors figure it out when she gets the telegram. It's not the happy ending it seems, but at least if it surprises you there's a moment of joy.
HOLY CRAP, do I believe the Oscar hype!!!! Minus One was beautifully done and animated. I wasn't expecting Noriko to have survived, but those Godzilla cells literally saved her neck.

My 63-year-old friend has been a G fan his entire life. He has seen all of the Godzilla movies multiple times And he considers this to be the best Godzilla movie ever made. He dragged me to the theater to see it. I was blown away.
The thing I really appreciated was the sense of despair in postwar Japan. But it was people coming together that restored hope and pride in their country.
The plane wasn't carrying a missile, it was carrying a bomb, however, the plane was armed with a 20mm cannon, which the head mechanic wanted him to fire at Godzilla, although the effects would've been doubtful.
This film is based on the original Godzilla and is a metaphor for the US destruction of Japan. By far the best Godzilla movie made at a fraction of the price that the silly Hollywood versions were made for. Great reaction Ladies.
In reality, Japan destroyed themselves with their evil policies and idiotic decision making.
What I loved about Minus One is that Godzilla isn't some mystical "Saviour of the Planet" or some other messianic figure, who is there to save humanity or some such nonsense. Godzilla, being the metaphor for war, is a force of nature, neither good nor bad - and doesn't care about humanity. This "alienness" makes Godzilla so much scarier than the Hollywood version, where it's implied that Godzilla is out to save us from other "Villainous" monsters.
The best part of this movie is that it wasnt really a Godzilla movie. It was a character movie with Godzilla. Beautiful.
I read that apparently Toho had a rule that prohibits Godzilla from eating humans, the same as there is a rule that Godzilla can never be killed in foreign films, however in the original film, although it is not seen on camera, it is mentioned that Godzilla ate humans every time he arrived at Odo Island, and that the natives made the tradition of making human sacrifices to Godzilla so that he would go away.

Man, everyone goes after Noriko for pushing Shikishima into the alley. You know how hard it is to tackle someone standing right next to you? Not to mention doing it as a reaction to a nuke going off a few blocks away 😅
* Noriko (female lead) might have been infected with G-cells (black mark on her neck) and survived the blast because of its regenerative power.
* Takashi Yamazaki (director) explained that post-war Japan was at “zero” and the attack by Godzilla, Tokyo was at “minus one” - hence, Godzilla Minus One.
* Amazing that Godzilla Minus One (2023) was made for under $12 million - just 1/13 of the budget of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024).
The American Monsterverse Godzilla is like a juicy hamburger while the recent Japanese Toho Godzilla is like a gourmet steak - both are “delicious” depending on your mood.
* The latest American “MonsterVerse” Godzilla movies were full of CGI “eye candies,” and did not require me to think very hard.
In licensed “monster” movies such as Godzilla vs Kong (2021) and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), I just “kicked back” and enjoyed the CGI spectacles.
More importantly, these two big-budget (over 130 million USD each) “popcorn flicks” were hugely profitable globally. This contractually restricts when and where the Japanese Toho could release or stream its Godzilla movies.
* The latest Japanese “Toho” Godzilla movies were allegories of Japan’s traumas, which required me to think deeply.
In Shin Godzilla (2016), the bureaucratic Japanese government failed to address the 2011 (rapidly unfolding) triple disasters of earthquake -> then tsunami -> then nuclear plant meltdown using an “evolving” Godzilla as an allegory.
In Godzilla Minus One (2023), the people-led effort defeated Godzilla (temporarily) as Japan rebuilt after World War II (post-1945) with a compelling human story of “survivor guilt.”
These two low-budget (under 12 million USD each) “monster” movies won numerous awards including Best Picture in Japan (both) and Godzilla Minus One won an Oscar in the US for Best Visual Effects (the first-ever for a low-budget monster movie).
Please please please watch Shin Godzilla. If you think this Godzilla is scary then that one will terrify you.

At the end on her neck was Godzilla's regenerative cells which healed her.
A major theme is saving the future of Japan. Within this theme Akiko is an important character. She was born in 1945 towards the end of the War. Fast forward to, say, 1970. Akiko would be just 25 years old, a young woman. Akiko will be part of the Japanese generation that rebuilds Japan into a global economic powerhouse in the 1960's through the 1980's.
Toho actually has a rule saying Godzilla cannot be shown preying on and eating humans or other creatures. At 18:12 Godzilla has always had a healing factor but this is definitely the fastest depiction as he appears to take more physical damage. The Bikini bomb is what increased his size, gave him atomic breath, and likely enhanced what regeneration he had. His skin actually resembles the original 54 design whete his scales are charred and keloid scars. The very first Godzilla film described it as an ancient sea creature "baptized in the fires of the hydrogen bomb"
Great reaction, ladies. For those of us that grew up watching the original Godzilla movies, this was a perfect homage. The music, the story, the effects all came together so well. I have loved all these reactions of younger people getting to experience an even better version of what we grew up with. (P.S. the English Dub of this movie was actually not that bad, I have seen both.)
Godzilla's color:
Where she regenerated, such as from the sea mine or the naval gunfire from the cruiser Takao, the new skin is pink rather than the original green-black. In the end battle, when she resurfaces after the forced sinking, the areas damaged by decompression sickness are white.
Also badly swollen, lumpy or ridged -- he surely had plenty of burst blood vessels. Even his eyes were white. Godzilla must have been in agony. If he hadn't stopped his rise half way, the plan might have finished him. But it's questionable whether even Koichi's 'plane bombs would have killed him, if he hadn't already been so badly hurt.
The actor who plays Tachibana is so good, should watch the Kenshin movies, he's just a blast in those

This is not a good guy. This is a monster.
You are also supposed to feel kinda sad for Godzilla. It was mankind's recklessness, interreference, and disrespect for his environment that created him and turned him into the monster he became. That is part of why everyone was saluting him as he died. Both as a form of respect for a fallen enemy and way of apology for their hand in his creation.
The English dub is probably the best dub job I've ever seen of all G films.
Noriko survived because during the blast, some of Godzillas' genetic material blew off of him and embedded in her, allowing her to heal. That's why the black mark on her neck begins to grow at the same time he begins to regenerate.
Shin Godzilla was my favorite, until this one came along XD

With all due respect ladies, this is set at the end of WWII. They don't have "missiles".... it's just a bomb... that's why he didn't "fire it" at Godzilla in the opening attack.
and it was fixed to the plane anyway. It was THAT ONE bomb that's set to explode on impact, that's why the plane blew off after Godzilla flipped it. Because it supposed to.

There's a great fan based monologue about Godzilla's motivations to destroy ... "I was the last of my kind, and you turned me into the first. That is why I punish you ... because I never though I could be made more alone."
Noriko survived because she was infected with Godzilla Cells [G-Cells] (the black mark on her neck) which gave her his regenerative power.
This remake of the original classic is a straight up excellent movie with great character development. I love how the changing post war attitude over the kamikaze culture is examined. When looking for volunteers for the final plan: "Does it mean certain death?" "Of course not." "Then it definitely beats wartime!"
The film is called Minus One because post World War II left Japan in ruins. They had to start all over again from ground Zero to rebuild. Then Godzilla shows up and wrecks even more havoc. Sending them from Zero to Minus One.
*SOME FYI:*
- Godzilla has an internal controllable swim bladder for buoyancy, plus his natural buoyant "thick thighs", plus his paddling power of legs and tail makes him "appear to stand waist deep in water" when fully used.
- Godzilla is a prehistoric monster awakened, mutated, and empowered by nuclear radiation. Godzilla is a symbol of the devastating consequences of nuclear war. He is a force of nature with atomic breath.
- There are several incarnations of Godzilla and this one reflects the original. I prefer Godzilla like this - his original concept (a force of nature) over some other incarnations in other movies (an Anti-Hero or even a "protective buddy" to humanity).
I need to see the "deleted footage" of his little feet kicking as he's treading water. Cause he's not walking out there. lol

If you look at the footage of Godzilla swimming, he mostly moves his tail back and forth for propulsion, like crocodiles or komodo dragons.
Hes a mostly aquatic animal he likely has swim bladders like fish or whales allowing him to control his buoyancy combined with his tail its not hard at all to believe he can "stand" in deep water
If you look around his entire body when he's walking on land, probably 80% of his mass is in his legs, tail, and lower torso.
He could easily tread water.
Takashi Yamazaki who was the director, writer, and VFX supervisor for this film was told by Steven Spielberg that not only did he love it, he saw this film in IMAX 3 times.
He also confirmed that the black substance crawling up Noriko’s neck in the final shot was in fact Godzilla’s cells, implying that she was able to survive because she had mostly regenerated just like Godzilla. And she likely got those cells because the news voiceover said parts of Godzilla came off him when he was being shot at by the tanks.
I love the foreshadowing in this film. The dead radiated deep sea fish rising to the surface too fast that their stomachs explode out of their mouths.

The reason Noriko survived, according to director Yamazaki who wrote the script, is because she is infected with godzilla cells and it’s because of them which gave her super regeneration powers.

Fun fact: most of minus one is based off another Godzilla film GMK which is the directors favorite Godzilla film.
The plot of the movie seems to a large extent to mix the original 1954 Godzilla and GMK, with added elements from other Toho movies, and even some inspirations from the Monsterverse Godzilla. But all given a distinctive creative spin, and with a completely original character arc.
Godzilla doesn't eat people, he chews them and throws them away.
There are golden rules: "Godzilla must not eat humans and must not destroy the Imperial Palace."
This is my fav Gojira film since the original, in 1954. This film skyrocketed into my top 20 of all time. I really appreciated how all the men saluted Gojira.
Koichi was showing PTSD. Had a friend who was the opposite of Koichi, during the Vietnam War, he killed, and he drank every night before bed, so he wouldn't remember his dreams. He also never had children because he couldn't stomach the thought of bringing a human into the world he knew.

Vivian is correct about the decompression and the fact that she knows that, and only referred to it as common sense in the most restrained manner possible. That only makes me see that I do have a solid bead on her. Which makes me respect her more. I love a person I can actually have a solid conversation with! Kristen, you put a smart girl on the spot. Because she suddenly remembered that she was talking to someone who is not as smart as her and she had to stumble to not insult you. I hate it when that happens to me! Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Nobody knows everything about every subject. If Kristen never went deep diving or encountered any diving references, she wouldn't have heard of the bends. That's not a reflection of intelligence. I'm sure there are things Kristen knows that Vivian doesn't.
Something I've noticed that a lot of reaction content makers miss with this film is why the floating deep sea fish have the bulbs where their heads are at. It's their stomachs coming out of their mouth due to the rapid decompression they undergo when the water current from Godzilla causes them to rise to the surface. It is also a cool bit of foreshadowing as to how they plan to defeat Godzilla.

In terms of intimidation factor, the top most intimidating versions of Godzilla are Minus One, Gojira 1985, Shin Godzilla, and GMK/Oni Godzilla.
The director of Minus One said that GMK (short for the title Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack) was a heavy influence on this movie, and when you've seen both you can see the parallels. Well worth watching.
If you want to see some of the best that the Japanese Gojira has to offer, I'd recommend watching Gojira, The Return of Godzilla/Godzilla 1985, Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack, and Shin Godzilla.
Godzilla has always had some degree of a healing factor, but the only other version that comes close to this one is from the movie Godzilla 2000.
And feeling a certain amount of sympathy for Godzilla is kind of the point. There is a line of dialogue from the film Godzilla 1985, where the protagonists are talking about Godzilla and one of them wants Godzilla dead, and the other protagonist makes this statement: " The other night at the reactor, didn't you sense it? The beast has a purpose. 30 years ago, Godzilla appeared for the first time. Before that, he was only a legend. Godzilla is a warning, a warning to every one of us. When mankind falls into conflict with nature, monsters are born. I'm just trying to....send him home." That being said, if you want to see a version of Godzilla that you are rooting to see get yeeted off the alive list, then the version in GMK is the one to check out.
And Godzilla has died twice in films, one was in the original 1954 film via the Oxygen Destroyer, a chemical weapon that literally disintegrated him on the cellular level. The second time was in the film Godzilla vs Destroyah, which ties directly to the original film and the Oxygen Destroyer that was originally used to kill the first Godzilla.

Kristen, Godzilla's been a villain since 1954. There was a period where he was a defender of Earth between the mid-'60s and mid-'70s, but he's mostly been a destructive force who cares nothing for the humans in his way.
In GMK: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, Goji is resurrected by the souls of those killed by the Japanese in WWII and is especially vindictive towards humanity.
You MUST watch the 1954 original. And if you watch any others, Shin Godzilla, The Return of Godzilla (1984), Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964), GMK, Biollante, and Destoroyah.

I read recently that the one thing Godzilla has never done is eat people, and Toho even put it in the rights contracts for overseas versions that godzilla was not to be shown eating people.
Also in the beginning scene, the bomb on the plane isn't able to be shot. It was attached to the bottom of the plane with no release mechanism, because he was supposed to crash into an enemy boat on purpose to damage it with the bomb.

If you notice in the beginning of the movie Godzilla wasn't eating the humans and getting annoyed by the spotlight on his face. Also, they said Godzilla was living on that island this whole time according to folklore. This means Godzilla is territory animal that was being attacked by other living things which are the humans.
Not so much on the island, as in the waters around it; but he'd emerge on land from time to time.
mOnsterverse Godzilla still the best and my favourite Godzilla. This movie is so perfect though.
19:22 Godzilla wasn't going easy, he just didn't get the chance to wreck them like it did the other minesweeper boat. The boat was also running away from it unlike the larger ship takao. Besides, the sea mines clearly destroyed part of his head, stopping him before his attention was turned towards the takao.
Also at 39:03 i think it's cool how they show the atomic breath is really damaging to godzilla itself, so it needs some time to regen, instead of being able to spam the attack.
This mutated Godzilla's skin looks permanently charred, like that of the original Godzilla. That doesn't go away when he regenerates. He's probably in constant pain, which can only fuel his rage and hatred toward the ones who did this to him... us.
The film is called Minus One because post World War II left Japan in ruins. They had to start all over again from ground Zero! Then Godzilla shows up and wrecks even more havoc. Taking them from Zero to Minus One! -OG

Excellent movie. To me personally, the best summation of Godzilla would be a combination of the original 1954, GMK, Godzilla 1985, Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, and Godzilla Minus One. The perfect Godzilla are certain bits, expressions, movements, facial twitches/expressions, and even the change in pitch and bass in his roar. I love english Godzilla, don't get me wrong..... ai grew up on the eit was how I was introduced to Godzilla as a character (Godzilla vs. Megalon was the first I remember watching). I wish I understood the Japanese language and even nuances more than I do because I do think it helps. I watched a reaction some time ago to a kaiju move directed by Del Toro, called, Pacific Rim; and without purposefully spoiling it, there is a significant and serious scene between a military leader, who also acts as a surrogate for a child he saved early in the "war days." In the last verbal expression, those two have over radio, Mako (female Japanese lead) says something very specific to her teacher/mentor/caregiver and, while I didn't fully understand. I could tell in those two brief exchanges, the scenes were meant to be very serious and convert appropriate gravitas to a junior officer to her commander. My point being, the conveying being that emotional trauma, while still finding a great and gifted martial artest, who was also as qualified, or more qualified than the match would prove, would do fairness to pick out the best candidate. Apologize for the slight rant, but really enjoy the fresh eyes you both look at these films with for us!

This movie is amazing. I’ve probably seen it 20 times by now not counting reactions and it just hits every viewing. My favorite thing aside from the main protagonist’s acting was that every person in the movie mattered to the story. Everyone had a part to play for real.
All of the named characters had moments to shine in the film, even the destroyer captain, and Akiko. 😉

Love this! What makes it more scary this Godzilla is slower than the others... which prolongs the feeling of impending doom, and of course more menacing!
Original Godzilla walked that slowly. Even Monsterverse Godzilla moved slowly first film. That's consistent with the convention that if you scale the size of something up, it takes longer to move its mass through a proportional space. The later Monsterverse films have sped things up to make action scenes more "exciting."
