In this video I briefly go over all the different formats the Titanic film was released on over the years. Including the mostly forgotten format of LaserDisc.
One thing struck me about MY LaserDisc of "Titanic." Mine was the usual analog video/Dolby Digital AC-3 sound, and I really liked it. When I bought the FIRST edition of the DVD when that dropped a few months after the LaserDisc, I noticed banding in the sea blue underwater shots. The quality of the DVD was otherwise a minor improvement on LaserDIsc. However, a few years afterward, I noticed other later editions on DVD were free of that banding (I heard it was called "aliasing") in those same underwater shots. My LaserDisc player was an "auto reverse" model that stopped the disc, flipped the laser over, restarted the disc, and picked up from the first side. I didn't try a VCR until a friend bought one. You're certainly right: the VCR's picture and sound couldn't hold a candle to that of an LD. Aloha!
My LD player also flips and plays the other side too. The DTS audio on LD is the best in my opinion. Awesome if you have the right speakers and audio processor.
@@timw8228 I've NEVER tried a DTS-encoded LaserDisc. Alas...I am now too old to be able to tell the difference, probably,😆🤣! I hope you are enjoying your DTS LaserDiscs. My old Dolby Digital ones will have to suffice when I want to watch some of my 1990s-vintage titles. Aloha!
I have a working player which is auto reverse and as I recall Titanic on Laserdisc is CLV on both sides of the first disc CLV on the first side of the second disc and I think CAV on the second side of the second disc.
The DTS release is one of the rarest releases as they did not produce that much, compared to the regular release with Dolby Digital AC-3 audio. And this is the only Paramount title to use the DTS audio. Back in the day when digital audio was revolutionary at that time, both audio mixes are the unaltered theatrical mixes for the movie themselves. Since you have the regular version with the AC-3 audio, you need a demodulator which is expensive as hell and too much of a headache, compared to DTS releases where any player with an optical or coax digital output works with a single plug to the receiver.
In my opinion the DTS audio was the best I have ever heard available in any format. Unfortuneatly the LD video quality suffers. It does clean up somewhat if after I feed it thru my video processor before going to my CRT projector. CRT the best quality of video viewing in my opinion because you get a true black providing contrast.
Interesting, I'm wondering if they were only ever available in the US? I don't recall anything ekse being available here in Australia between videos and DVDs. Maybe it wasn't considered worth the while unless the market for them really took off in the US (which you imply it didn't), suggesting it would in Australia too.
The collector value is shot, but the sentimental value just shot through the roof.
