Finally a life saving option to mask the canopies without a hassle! Time to leave the masking tape for the general camo patterns of the model. Heres thy sub, now I can eat choco again XD
I tried this technique on a model but I used Baremetal Foil. I liked it, but having a fresh, ultra-sharp, #11 knife blade is definitely an absolute must.
@@TheEmptySprue Yeah, I definitely had some residue. Since I sealed everything with Testors clear flat aftwards, I was able to use a Qtip and alcohol to remove the residue afterward. I'll definitely check out these chocolate wrappers.
The problem with BMF is it leaves a sticky residue that requires cleaners to remove. The adhesive used on the chocolate foil is a food grade wax, so cleaning the canopy afterwards simply means buffing it with a soft, dry cloth. You can see a video about that right here: th-cam.com/video/q4y37zx_W68/w-d-xo.html
When I was a kid in the 70's we peeled the foil from Wrigley's Spearmint Gum wrappers and stuck it on everything. I wonder if those wrappers are still made the same way
Lindt Lindor chocolate truffles. Each color wrapper is a different flavor of chocoloate. A few dont work for some strange reason, but most do. I have the best luck with the blue (milk chocolate?) or the black (dark chocolate) wrappers.
Absolutely. Scale doesn't matter. Be sure to use a new blade, almost zero pressure is required. Let us know how you like it once you try it! Thank you for watching!
No, kitchen foil is much much thicker and does not have the waxy substance on it like the chocolate foil has, so there would be now way for it to stick.
I've successfully used kitchen foil with good results - just have to apply a coating of adhesive. It's many years since I did it though and I can't remember what adhesive I used. You can probably find videos on the internet.
Im going to guess you have been trying the red wrappers? For some reason, some colors just dont work. The red wrapper is one of them. The foil should peel fairly easily and not have any color from the plastic on it. If when you peel the foil, its difficult and color from the plastic is on it, these will not work. The best and easiest to find are the blue wrapper
The chocolates in the video, Lindt, were purchased in the US. You can find them in most stores, including Costco, Target, Walmart, grocery stores etc. Thanks for watching!
I'm just curious. How do you get the candy foil to stick to the canopy? I'm guessing I missed that part. Also, Hersheys kisses have a thin foil as well.
This particular chocolate uses what I'm guessing is a food grade wax to adhere the foil to the plastic wrapper (Hershey kisses dont have a plastic wrapper, therefore no wax adhesive) This waxy side is the side that sticks to the canopy. To remove the foil easily, hold it up to a warm light for 15 seconds or so.
Yep, I can just see the look on the girlfriends face when she comes snooping and finds a pile of these wrappers on the desk... "You bastard, you been out here, smoking weed & eating freaking EXPENSIVE (now shouting...) chocolates, making those dumb ass planes and things." Any other ideas to rattle her cage please? New sub from me.
@@mattduke1181 the red ones almost never work for some odd reason. Try the blue (milk chocolate) or the black (dark chocolate), they almost always work
Your welcome! If when you peel the foil from the plastic, if there is color on the foil from the plastic, the foil wont stick. Youll notice the difference once you get a different color. Most all the colors work, but the red just doesnt, its weird. Let me know how it works out for you Matt!
Same concept, only this doesnt leave a nasty sticky mess like bmf does, is MUCH cheaper, and comes with free chocolate. Do a google search for bmf resudue problems, there is none of that with this.

I have masking canopies using this method. How many modelers can say that!? 😂
Great ! Thank you ! I've used bare metal foil but its thicker , more expensive. & Has an adhesive. Can't wait to try this 😊
What a great tip. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Glad you think so! Thanks for watching!
ciekawy sposób, kiedyś tego spróbuję
I tried this technique on a model but I used Baremetal Foil. I liked it, but having a fresh, ultra-sharp, #11 knife blade is definitely an absolute must.
BMF can leave a nasty sticky residue behind, this does not. Plus the chocolate tastes better and is cheaper! Thanks for checking out my video! ❤
@@TheEmptySprue Yeah, I definitely had some residue. Since I sealed everything with Testors clear flat aftwards, I was able to use a Qtip and alcohol to remove the residue afterward. I'll definitely check out these chocolate wrappers.
So this stuff is exactly the same to work with as BMF, without the troublesome residue. Let me know how it works out for you.
@@TheEmptySprue I'm busy stocking up on candy wrappers. 😁

Fantastic work. Great method. Very nice video. Greetings. Aleš 😎👍
Thank you very much Ales!
I use Bare Metal Foil to do this - it has an adhesive to adhere to the plastic though you still need to tamp it into place. Great video - thanks.

Definitely better than masking tape. You can also remove your masks and scan them, vectorize to print oramasks and share !
That's exactly what I use this technique for once I got my cameo.

different stuff I believe
thanks for the usefull tip. What is the name of the background music you are playing

Excellent
Thank you! Cheers!

Clever concept
It's made me actually look forward to masking canopies. I find them fun now, not necessarily just because there's chocolate involved! : )
Is this just better than masking w/ tape because you get to eat tons of Lindt? I’m in!
😄😀 Its the secret bonus!
Oh, chocolate wrapping, i was like crap now i got to go buy another special foil 😅
Very cool technique. Will this work as well on a Kitchen aluminum foil too 😛

Great, now I'm gonna get diabetes while modeling.

Yes, it will work on anything the foil will stick to. The secret is getting the right chocolate
thank you so much. gone are the days of losing my sanity over little masks
Glad you found it useful Piotrek! It's made masking canopies actually fun for me.
Useful technique, thanks for sharing! Subbed.
Awesome, glad you liked it. Have you had a chance to try it? Thanks for sub!
How do you remove it post painting? It looks like it`s stuck on there pretty good. Also does it leave a residue?
Oops I see you have a video to address the residue issue
