Poverty and Palm Oil are Driving Deforestation in Indonesia

  • VICE travels to the forests of Aceh province, a region still struggling with palm oil-related deforestation and a troubling story of burning land. Widespread deforestation has caused massive flooding, exacerbating the problems of poor smallholder farmers. To add to their woes, small scale farmers have typically been the ones blamed for sparking the fires. But while the government has approached the issue as a law enforcement one, arresting farmers accused of burning their land, others are trying to understand the economic reality of this situation and remedy the issue. In this film, we meet the stakeholders of this problem and farmers offering an alternative for a problem that’s of global importance.

He has the audacity to call people lazy, even if they dont provide good infrastructure, health care and internet access. I was raised from poverty. Its not because of laziness. Moreover, the education quality in Indonesia it's lame. Meanwhile in java island people had 9 score education, in Sumatra we only got 4 score. Lack of infrastructure, there's no internet. People don't know about tech tings and everything that could improve their knowledge and prosperity. People can't get out of poverty without proper education and right information. And also good infrastructure including internet, road, health care

Indonesia is disgustingly corrupt. You should check out the Act of Killing, it is about the genocidal military coup of Indonesia which took place in the 1960s with the backing of the western powers. It killed at least 2 million people, and is the origin of Indonesia's corruption.

Agri-Cultivation, Animal Husbandry, Fishery, cottage industry, etc, thrive side-by-side to excel being a farmer.

Massive deforestation was never an economic necessity. None of this ever needed to happen.
The govt of Indonesia needs to get out of the business of liquidating forests. Forest liquidation and forest conversion are the Indonesian national economic policies that created this ecological horror. The end of Indonesia's forests will happen in our lifetimes if the Indonesian govt doesn't reverse it's policies.
We've heard it all before. Reforms are coming. Yet they never do and that's because the Indonesian govt has not changed it's economic development practices, namely liquidating forests and converting them.into expanses of pulp and palm oil plantations

Wah, ceritanya sangat tidak seimbang dan tidak lengkap. Deforestation and poverty are definitely big problems in all of Aceh, but it is curious and unfortunate why VICE singles out Aceh Tamiang government, and fails to mention that pemerintah Aceh Tamiang has already take many historic steps to help solve these issues? Misalnya:
    - Moratorium on new palm development and review of all existing licenses (2018)
    - Formation of Green Growth Acceleration (Tim Percepatan Pengangunan Hijau) in partnership with local NGOs
    - Dll. A simple Google will pull up many concrete examples dan statistik resmi (termasuk dari lembaga penelitian dan ilmiah) that show the success of these efforts on slowing deforestation and improving

Palm oil stores solar energy in its wood(Infact the heat of the wood that ignites comes from solar energy... Also CO2), and is an high growth wood crop!! in about 20 years a palm grows up to 12 meters!!..honestly, I think it's comparable to a local forest in terms of wood growth(the measure of stored CO2 and solar energy)... Obviously the wood of the cut plantations must not be burned ... but it must be used to make wood objects that last over time. If it stores solar energy it means it takes away solar energy from the environment and so it breaks global warming. Surely better than non-tree oil crops... Human beings, see better where's global warming.

It's sad and disgusting how "From the people" turn into power hungry politicians after they are elected "By the people" but then are no longer "For the people". I thought according to our ideology, we share an identity as fellow Indonesians so we are able to take care of eachother. But individualism takes place. In my opinion, Further decentralization of the government should take place, but with better oversight. When you say something as leaders, please act on it, and actually see it through and keep maintaining your words... Why not hire rangers from locals... pay them to take care of the forests?
I know it's hard to prioritize the people, the economy or the environment, especially in a nation that is so in need of economic stability, yet the people's lives are so intertwined with the environment.

It's a catch 2-2 ... While i do acknowledged there was an inherent problem of lack an inovation comes from the farmers ( lazy ) it also exarcebated by govts official who are too lazy to bring the solution for the farmers ....so it was a devil circle of nothing done and nothing moves on .. nobody was an innocent here ...
