Old Believer Lestovka explained

- In this short video I explain the symbolism of the Old Believer prayer rope, called Lestovka (steps), and how it is used. Spoiler: to grow closer to Christ.

I now have two of them. For me and the physical work I do, the lestovka, made of leather, is far more practical and durable for me. I carry it in my pocket daily and pull it out throughout the day. The knot chotki easily tears and rips apart on me. Not the lestovka. And the symbolism connected to it is wonderful.

That Lestovka is gorgeous
Dear Father Deacon. Thank you for the video. As the old Lestovkahad seven moveable counters sewn inside for keeping track of each turn of the ladder, does today's lestovka still have these counters, and do Old Believers still keep the old rule of 700 prayers each day? I have read that it was very common in the old day.

Some lestovki today do have the counters. One of mine has it, for instance. If Old Believers generally keep that rule, is hard to say. It is a traditional rule so some hopefully still do it.

I ordered one and it arrived today, it came from Russia although I used Amazon. What are the prayers you use on the rungs of the ladder.

I own one made in Ukraine and have begun including it in my daily prayers using the 12 steps during the "Lord have mercy" portion

you would just have to research and make sure they are canonical. if they have a website or something link it and we'll check them out. not sure if there are canonical old rite russian orthodox churches in alaska

who are the 17 prophets? does this refer to the 5+12 books of the major and minor prophets? that doesn't really make sense since Jeremiah wrote both Jeremiah and lamentations, and there were many prophets (like Elijah and Elisha) that do not have a book.
12 minor prophets + 4 major prophets + John the Forerunner.

What exactly do you mean by fanaticism? In which way this is fanaticism?
You say the same prayers that you can say on a chotke. Do you mean to the adherence to their faith culture the way that they were brought up ? Or because they don’t embrace any western weakness ?
Heart breaking to listen to someone trying to be religious and even saying the name Jesus, but lacking the most basic truths of Christianity. Yours is a false and useless practice that is not pleasing to God. There is no climbing by your own works to heaven. Saying a set number of prewritten prayers to atone for missing a service is utter nonsense. God created you with a mind and freedom of choice for the purpose of a relationship with Him as an intelligent being. He could create mindless creatures to repeat prayers in vain repetition but, He wanted more, a real relationship with you. Thank you for your sincerity but, please think about what you are doing. Read your Bibles and come to know Jesus who died for you and saves you by His grace alone.
