Horace silver used to come by to hear me play stride piano, and I had just got the book with the famous picture,I told him that lucky Roberts was right next to him in the famous Harlem picture.horace didn't know who lucky wAs ..I told him that lucky was as good as it gets for stride and that he needed to hear his recorded playing,,,he knew who the lion was, said Horace reminded him of Ellington,in that his music was very spiritual.....Horace introduced me as the great stride pianist Barry gordon at an ASCAP meeting, quiet a honor for me...I met the lion, my greatest experience.....
There is a wonderful and comprehensive autobiography of Sonny Rollins which was done with his full cooperation and consent. It should be named 'Sonny Speaks'.
