Ruki oh definitely. Especially the 3D ones. I was an animation student a while ago in high school and it’s so much easier to see why something works or fails in 3D when you can see every side of it, as compared to 2D where, when something breaks, it becomes almost unrecognizable. Yet 2D games are much easier to get right so in those it’s easier to see the neat little touches the animators add with the additional time…if the game is done well that is.
Considering that there's almost no game made that doesn't include some kind of animation in it, definitely. Pick a game you think looks good aesthetically and do plenty of research as to how they accomplished what they did. And, yes, that includes playing it.
Odd Also, kinda a weird point, but also games with almost no animation. Knowing what can be conveyed without will allow you to spend more time animating the rest.
Maybe 2? I'd be really interested in an episode specifically comparing DBFZ to DBZ. I guess it's a bit like the Smash Bros episodes, but still. Saying DBFZ looks like DBZ is wildly underselling it. It looks like how DBZ is remembered by fans - the platonic ideal of Dragonball, in a sense. It's bloody impressive.
For those that are fans of Bomb Chicken's pixel art, try some of Nitrome's mobile games, or their back catalogue of flash games. They're very good at their pixel art.
Nitrome was that website where we played every single games they made....sadly, they are all focusing to mobile now (I heard that it was their original intention), but I miss the days we would be excited for a new game for us to play.
@@patchpen5613 Wait, this is the Dan from Extra Credits? Damn, I did think their style was similar, but... How didn't didn't I find this channel sooner! Subscribing and binge-watching all previous videos right now.
Gosh, Celeste in the intro then mentioned nowhere? But its incredible how minimalist its animation is while still conveying so much character and gameplay info! Heck, calling it minimalist might be a misnommer, there was some intense particle work gone in there to really sell the natural flow of the movement in this game. The way Madeline's hair bounces with gravity, or floats when infused with extra power, the squash and stretch on jumping and dashing... So much to love.

I love it when 3D animation is used to imitate (successfully) 2d animation. I was surprised when it was done with guilty gear xrd and have loved it since. Happy New Years!
I think one of my favourite animations this year was, honestly, the various Pokemon walk/run cycles which were often surprising but never failed to feel perfect for them to me. The bulbasaur line moves in that 'two feet at a time leaps' that frogs tend to move? This simultaneously surprised me but that's basically how a frog moves and upon seeing it _of course_ they'd move like that. So many good choices along those lines there.

Yay, Iconoclasts! I am similarly impressed that one person not only put all that together, but put it together SO WELL. Story, art, music, dialogue... Everything is just fantastic.
Another great video on one of my favorite TH-cam channels. The little detail I noticed in RDR2 that blew me away were the long-sleeved shirts and jackets on Arthur. They would fall up and down his arm/wrist depending on what he was doing and how high or low his arms/hands were raised. Edit: I was not prepared for that PlayOnline nostalgia bomb at the end ..
Always loved Monster Hunter's animation. Each hit feels super meaty, and all the tiny details are amazing. The monsters as well all have their tiny little quirks on how they move. It's amazing.

I think it would be worth checking out WayForward's animation since they usually do a fantastic job at that. Maybe even the first Shantae on GBC, I was always impressed at the amount of character they were able to put in such a tiny sprite.
All of Hollow Knights animation is so amazing. I love how they are able to get away with flat colors and never shading his body due to a faint light always being present around the Knight. That game is the tits man.
I *love* how they made the world dreary and Souls-y without feeling oppressive. Like, it blows my mind to no end that something can be so spooky and yet so darn charming, adorable, and captivating. (Except for Deepnest. Deepnest can go take a charmingly dreary hike.)
I'd also love to hear your thoughts on the parkour animations in Warframe and how you can seemlessly tie together any combination of the following actions: -walking -running -sliding -jumping -bullet jumping -double jumping -wall hopping -aim gliding -rolling -any of these while shooting or reloading or using melee
Recently found your channel and and I've already binge watched all of your videos! I love this sort of in depth look at the finer details and I love animation in general! Can't wait to see more from you and great rundown of 2018 animation-wise!
Dan, you have to check out The Gardens Between. It's a light puzzle game that has to do with manipulating time where the characters move along a predetermined path, but the player can move them up or down that path at will by progressing or reversing time. But its main selling point is just how gorgeous its animation is. The thing that I imagine would interest you most about this, in particular, is that because the game basically runs "on rails" and the developers don't have to worry about the player, say, interrupting an animation by initiating a walk cycle, The Gardens Between has so much extra space to design custom one-off animations and little character moments, and the game takes full advantage of that fact. If nothing else, it's unique in that regard, and I can only imagine how an actually trained animator would see it.
I’m so happy I found this channel!! I’ve always paid close attention to detail in video games especially and I’m so happy I can watch a video that caters to that (:
The cool thing about the Spyro remaster is how they pretty much used the same storyboards from the original and did what their tech couldn't do at the time.

Gris totally belongs on this list. I was stunned plying this on my Switch. I kept hitting the “capture the last 30 seconds” button over little things like some rocks falling over or the wind blowing
Seeing someone give Nitrome praise for their quality animation always makes me happy. I've been following that studio for over a decade and they always create quality looking games.
Love the channel! I mentioned this in an earlier video, but I'd like to see your analysis of God Hand's animation. The create-a-combo system is insane enough, but the fact that it all flows together surprisingly well still impresses me. Happy New year!
You've quickly become one of my favourite TH-camrs, Dan! Whenever somebody would narrate anything about games, I always missed the aspect of animation. Well, now we got our personal expert in here! Many best wishes for the upcoming new year! Cheers! =) Would love you to someday take up mid-vintage RPGs (Lion King, Aladdin, Prince of Persia, Dangerous Dave, etc) and probably an evolution of certain series in terms of animation (Tomb Raider, LOZ, MGS, GTA, AC, JC) (although you've covered some aspects in fragmented manner, their evolution over time would be fun to analyse).
Wow, to think this channel started a bit recently but is already this good. I got the Guilty Gear and FighterZ video recommended and after that, I was hooked. Already hit that subscribe button with no second thought
Irrelevant to the video, but I'm glad to hear the playonline theme getting some love since everyone's kinda forgotten about FFXI. Also noticed XI was in the channel trailer alongside XIV, so I'm hoping to see more of it someday.
Thank you Dan, so much for this, I don’t *play* many games for various reasons, but you’re work has helped me to appreciate them as art and the experience of watching playthroughs on the internet has been really great And Gris looks immaculate, I’m gonna go look at it right now
Kingdom Hearts 3, specifically the "Let it go" animated sequence is seriously on par with the movie. Toy Story and Pirates are also looking really impressive.
Hey I just wanna say that this is probably one of my favourite channels right now, you've srarted this channel with a very good first year and I hope that 2019 will be a good year for you
I'd say all the unique movements of the follow animations for Pokemon Let's Go deserve a shoutout. Creating a totally unique movement pattern for each of the 151 original pokemon gives them so much character and lets you get so attached to them

Gris totally belongs on this list. I was stunned plying this on my Switch. I kept hitting the “capture the last 30 seconds” button over little things like some rocks falling over or the wind blowing
Thank you for a very good year! This channel is on my "always watch" list.
I’m so glad I found this channel. I’m a real sucker for good animation in games.
This was a really cool video! It's awesome to get a recap of what the year held for us at its high points!
Just found your channel and OMG this is going to be a great year!
Love your videos, looking forward to another year of them! :)
Really glad to have found and subbed to this channel yesterday. This is some quality work. Looking forward to the 2019 list next year!
I'm so glad you included Gris! The animation style of it really inspires me. Thank you for mentioning it!
Man! I’ve now watched several of your videos in a row, and can say you’ve certainly earned that subscribe 🙂
I never thought I would hear a video end with the PlayOnline music.
I love that cover so much, I use it at every single darned opportunity. :D
Seeing someone give Nitrome praise for their quality animation always makes me happy. I've been following that studio for over a decade and they always create quality looking games.
i really didn't think there was someone out there who actually enjoyed game animation as much as me!
that's a sub
Just downloaded the demo for Just Shapes and Beats. Looks amazing.
Love the channel! I mentioned this in an earlier video, but I'd like to see your analysis of God Hand's animation. The create-a-combo system is insane enough, but the fact that it all flows together surprisingly well still impresses me. Happy New year!
Normal people: "This game has great animation, which is a big plus".
New Frame Plus: "This animation has good gameplay, which is a bug plus"
Dan, I seriously love your passion for animation
With all these animation improvements in 2018, I can't imagine what they could do in 2019!
You've quickly become one of my favourite TH-camrs, Dan! Whenever somebody would narrate anything about games, I always missed the aspect of animation. Well, now we got our personal expert in here! Many best wishes for the upcoming new year! Cheers! =)
Would love you to someday take up mid-vintage RPGs (Lion King, Aladdin, Prince of Persia, Dangerous Dave, etc) and probably an evolution of certain series in terms of animation (Tomb Raider, LOZ, MGS, GTA, AC, JC) (although you've covered some aspects in fragmented manner, their evolution over time would be fun to analyse).
Happy new year, Dan! :)
Thank you for this channel Dan, I look forward to your content in 2019! Happy New Year :)
Wow, to think this channel started a bit recently but is already this good. I got the Guilty Gear and FighterZ video recommended and after that, I was hooked. Already hit that subscribe button with no second thought
I didn't know I was interested in animation untill I found this channel.
And I have to say that I absolutely love it.
Irrelevant to the video, but I'm glad to hear the playonline theme getting some love since everyone's kinda forgotten about FFXI. Also noticed XI was in the channel trailer alongside XIV, so I'm hoping to see more of it someday.
Thank you Dan, so much for this, I don’t *play* many games for various reasons, but you’re work has helped me to appreciate them as art and the experience of watching playthroughs on the internet has been really great
And Gris looks immaculate, I’m gonna go look at it right now
Kingdom Hearts 3, specifically the "Let it go" animated sequence is seriously on par with the movie. Toy Story and Pirates are also looking really impressive.
Hey I just wanna say that this is probably one of my favourite channels right now, you've srarted this channel with a very good first year and I hope that 2019 will be a good year for you
I am not even interested in animation in general but this guys passion is enough to make these videos very interesting
I'd say all the unique movements of the follow animations for Pokemon Let's Go deserve a shoutout. Creating a totally unique movement pattern for each of the 151 original pokemon gives them so much character and lets you get so attached to them
just discover this channal. You are my favoritr now
