Zelda 64 Beta Restoration (Ocarina of Time MOD, unreleased)

- In 2008 a group of Zelda fans known as "Team Beta Triforce" was trying to create a playable version of the Zelda: Ocarina of Time beta screens that we saw in old gaming magazines, modding the final game to create places, enemies and animations that would have been similar to what Zelda 64 could have looked like on the 64DD, during its early days. Unfortunately this MOD was never completed and as far as i know it was never released to the public. They uploaded this trailer on TH-cam to show their progress, but it seems that the video was later removed. I have uploaded this backup to preserve it, because it looked awesome. Now that we have these maps it's scary how accurate these recreations are
It sucks we didn't get Castle Town.
Not really, they're all simple areas with a lot of space and there were good screenshots to use as reference.
@@Valientlink yeah but taking into consideration that they modelled everything nearly spot on and got the UV maps almost perfect is pretty impressive

@@KiTheMC It still might be in the files and hasn't been dumped yet. We don't know.
With the new beta dump it's kind of fun to see what modders got "so close" but not quite right, especially the scale of old maps which are MASSIVE
Which ironically enough is why most of them were scrapped. Nintendo wanted massive, But had to compromise so much that it just wasn't worth it in the end. That would have to wait all the way until breath of the wild.
One of these days, before I die, someone has to make a faithful reconstruction of the beta.
If I'm 40 and no one has done it then.... Then I will literally go out of my way and learn how to hack oot and just freaking do it myself.
Don't give up even if you get a cease & desist letter like the pussies in 2008.

Welp, the guy that made this I just talked to, and I convinced him to gather everything and release it this year's end. And yes, I did actually start modding oot and making beta maps.

Wow, this mod looks incredibly accurate when viewed against the little footage and screenshots we have of the old Zelda 64 builds. Still hopeful that someday we might see this leak out.

This is really cool. Definitely a lot of differences from the beta version to the finished version.
It's been a while. Still got all the files for this old mod. Got my old computer back so I'll upload it whenever I can. I hope somebody else like to to use my work and put it together with the new leaks. I spent a hell lot of time creating this back in the days so I want to thank all of you who likes this mod. It will be released as "unfinished" with lots of random files.

Not sure if anyone will see this but the new Nintendo leaks have much of the stuff that was recreated here. The skeleton/stalfos, a pre rendered image of the temple if time, and more beta stuff and even the hub works/castle area.
The maps are still being worked on, but yes, enemies have been found
I like the smooth texture and fog the game looks like more huge and awesome
This looks amazingly accurate to the real beta. It's just a shame it was never completed, nor was the unfinished build even released.
I need this in my life - A true Zelda 64 restoration!

It's not that the beta is/was not there. It's that the string, code and files from alpha and beta versions are still present on the media format of the final release of EVERY game. With millions of files and just a fraction of those files being used for the final version there are plenty that sit idle on the media format to be discovered and re-enabled. EVERY beta release or beta mod uses these forgotten about files from the final release.
For a second in the beginning, I thought I was looking at a trailer from 1997 I had not seen before.
It did look a bit...hackish, amateurish in some spots, but it appeared to be well on its way to being a faithful reconstruction.
Oh well, I hope somebody else will be up to the task someday.
Man i love the way link originally looked on the n64. I like the shield and swords too. The original beta model had much better shape, i assume more polygons for the model. But still this is the next best thing. Brown sleeved link is the best design. Wish we still had games and art made in that design.
In a strange way, the beta shows Nintendo's early dilemma with a 3D Zelda game. This was the NES days all over again, only with polygons. So a choice had to be made, wide and sparse or confined and populated? And if they wanted it really populated, that meant ditching the 3D environment alltogether.
The Mod shown in the video is not the same mod that was being made by TBT. This is actually the latest version of Wallerstrom's Mod and the last to be seen publicly from him.
Though the castle town was originally supposed to be a part of the Beta restoration mod.

you know they mention that legend of zelda ocirina of time the ura thing right instead of people trying to make there own versions of what they assume it should have been like how bout to get word around about why that game maker should get back in the studio 1 last time to finish what they started but failed to fully finish EPIC :)

But for now, it looks like the closest thing we'll be getting is RareWare's new "Sea of Thieves" game, which might actually turn out to be one of their best games since the Microsoft buyout... One of their best games in years... I hope. It's an adventure, and that's what RareWare does best.
As for Dream actually being reignited? Who knows? Maybe Playtonic will actually be able to buy the rights someday. I'd imagine it would be one of the cheapest RareWare IPs since they've never actually used it one single time, but the question remains... More like the SNES version or more like the N64 version?

I don't understand why people are saying this beta was never completed? Ocarina of Time is the final product of this beta, and they changed the name from Zelda64 to The Legend of Zelda
Well... Technically when they first showed the game, before kid link was even a thing, the story was yet to be implemented. At this point, in the build they tried to recreate in this video, there was no story yet, it was just... A 3d zelda, a base to build upon when story was later written and finalized. So, yes, it is different, but when people say it was a different story, they're wrong, since there was no story at that point.

I do too, trust me. Cutting room floor has a lot of stuff on it, but theres some stuff I've seen thats not documented anywhere... Btw, that guy who was doing the Beta Triforce hack for it, messaged me earlier this week. He canceled the project for now, but he'll be uploading every single thing he's done this summer, so if others want to complete it, they can, which I'm very happy for. He's done a lot at making a recreation of the beta of this game.
