    This was a great video, thank you for all the information. I only just recently found you and wanted to take the time to tell you how much I enjoy watching your videos. Your way of speaking is so calming, something that is so refreshing right now in this crazy world. I tried to order the Whole Seed Catalog from Baker Creek but they don't have any more for 2021, the free one nor the one you can purchase. I was so disappointed. But I will try some of the other ones you suggested.

    • @SusansInTheGarden
      @SusansInTheGarden  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, Sandy! I really appreciate your sweet comments. That is crazy about Baker Creek being out of both catalogs already. Yikes. You might try calling a local book store or magazine vendor.

    I love botanical interests seed packets. They have so much info that you can sit down with a packet and know almost everything you need to know without having to necessarily go online. Sometimes I will buy a packet of something that I also buy in bulk just so I have the packet in hand because phones have so much glare out in the garden. I save empty seed packets with an index card in a small photo album with sleeves and go through that along with my seed stash before I order anything.
    The one thing I don’t like about baker creek is that they don’t list days to maturity. But alternately, their reviews are so helpful and I can usually find a review by someone in a similar zone who has left a thorough description of their experience.

    • @SusansInTheGarden
      @SusansInTheGarden  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi, Danielle. Yes, you are right about the lack of days to maturity info in Baker Creek seed catalogs. I find that annoying, esp. since we live in a region with a short growing season. Some folks say the days to maturity information isn't that helpful since everyone has different seasons, however, I need to at least have a starting point to determine if a variety will work for me. Take care.

      @@SusansInTheGarden completely agree! I feel like the average gardener who shops at Baker Creek is in at least the moderate echelon of experience. Most newbies haven’t discovered them yet, so by that level of experience most of us know that “50 days” doesn’t literally mean 50 days necessarily. It only takes a few seasons of growing to know that x days in full sun is different than in part sun and x days spring full sun is different than fall or summer full sun. And on and on. It’s a useful shorthand that I wish they would use, but again thank you to all the people who share their experience in the reviews. Infinitely helpful!

It’s chock full of helpful information. They aren’t the least expensive but they have got me hooked!

    Thanks for all the good advice on considering seeds. I am ordering some this year in case I cannot find them in spring at my main nursery. Last year I could not find Edamame seeds, but I sprouted some dried soy beans and grew plants in bags. The beans were slightly smaller but at least I got some

    Nice video, thanks for showing me more seed catalogs I didnt know about. The Botanical Interests one looks like one I need to get. I already have 95% of my seeds for next year, I just need some more seeds of the things I have for fall. Catalogs are great in the off season, mine started yesterday as we went down from 25-30 overnight to 15 in 5b south of Chicago. I like your website and I will be looking at it to glean as much info as I can. Going into my third gardening year there is still so much to learn.

    Love watching your videos you always have helpful information! I have been following you for quite awhile and I see your channel has really grown too, so you must get a lot of questions and comments but I’m hoping you will be able to help me with a question? Last year I mistakenly used some manure or compost that I’m sure had herbicides in it every thing I grew was stunted or didn’t grow at all! Should I remove all soil from my raised beds and start over or can I put fresh organic compost on top of it? The idea of removing all that soil is not a happy thought! What would you do? Thank you for your help!

    • @SusansInTheGarden
      @SusansInTheGarden  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there. First of all, thanks so much for your nice comments. I'm so glad you've been enjoying my videos. Re: the soil issue, all I can say is "ugh!" If the manure contained a persistent herbicide such as clopyralid, it will take about 6 years for it to dissipate. Some farmers use this product when they're growing crops such as Timothy hay, to kill or prevent weeds. Livestock later feed on the hay but the herbicide doesn't break down as it goes through their digestive system. Then when it's used as a soil amendment, it kills or adversely affects plants in your garden. Joe Lamp'l, who is the host and producer of the PBS series, Growing a Greener World, had this happen in his garden. Here is a link to his blog post about this, which explains how he diagnosed it and what he did about it: www.growingagreenerworld.com/killer-compost-it-happened-to-us/. Best of luck.

    I am so jealous! Here in Germany (or in Hungary) we don't get the information "maturity days" which I find so useful! It is neither on a seed package nor in a catalogue 😐 I didn't even know it existed, until I started watching Gardeners from overseas.
    But your video was very informative and I am going to look at your website right now! Will you also make a video about the seeds you got for 2021? 😊I would love to see that.
    😊Greetings, Judit

    These are some really great tips! Do you have an affiliate link set up? If so I'd love a link to that garden journal you showed. I've been considering either buying one or just making a spreadsheet. I've been gardening professionally for over 15 years now and the years are starting to run together in my head!

    • @SusansInTheGarden
      @SusansInTheGarden  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there. I don't have one and am debating whether I want to go that route.

    • @GardenUPLandscape
      @GardenUPLandscape 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SusansInTheGarden Is there a reason you wouldn't? You've got your own books that you market. If people used your affiliate link to find them then you'd get a extra couple cents on every purchase. It's not much, but it all adds up, right?
      It doesn't cost anything, you just have to have enough people purchase using your links to keep it active. I set one up when I first started, but I don't have enough traffic yet so no one used it and it went inactive. I'll reactivate it when my channel gets bigger.
