That vitamin line always cracks me up. I kind of hate the story of this episode, having heard it more often than I probably should have, but I always get a smile from that one exchange.

Funny that Dimension X and X Minus One were both on NBC and did some of the same stories.

It's not like it was an accident. X-1 was a deliberate remake of DX,up until they started running out of DX stories to remake and brokered a deal with Galaxy magazine to adapt the shorts they were publishing. It went on to be much more successful than its predecessor, running about twice as long.

    It's 2018 & we haven't even put men/women on Mars. Oh well.

See, what it was, was that they were locked in the time period of 1938 or 1946 (the past) and so they told stories as a time Traveler would tell almost as the christ was able to Speak on future events such as the foretold destruction of Jerusalem & of the Coming Kingdom of the Future.

Good story, except it's silly to keep sending crewed spaceships instead of switching to unmanned probes. Good acting. Annoying sound effects.

Remember where computer technology was even in the 1960s (room sized mainframes running on magnetic tape were the cutting edge), and this was a decade earlier. Rocketry seemed like a far more dynamic and potential-filled field of science than "cybertronics". The idea that a robot could replace mankind was far-reaching enough that a story couldn't accomodate both that AND the concept of space travel.

@@quicksilvertongue3248 : Unmanned probes don't need robotics or AI. They wouldn't need to be sophisticated. They would just need some sensor instruments and a telemetry transmitter, like the unmanned craft sent up in the early days of the space age. Explorer 1 discovered the Van Allen Belt in 1958. The U.S. Air Force began launching reconnaissance satellites in 1960. Over a century ago, unmanned weather balloons discovered the troposphere and stratosphere.
Doing the same thing and hoping for a different result is often cited as a definition of insanity. So it's crazy to send more humans after lost, presumed dead humans, hoping for a different result despite no knowledge of what went wrong. And unnecessary. A manned spaceship could stop before reaching the point where earlier missions lost contact, observe what happens to probes they launch toward that point, and report back what they learn. They could also use probes to search for a perimeter of the mystery phenomenon, to learn whether it would be possible to just go around it.
