  • This time, the freight train video we will deliver to the viewers is the third Hamana Bridge over Lake Hamana in Shizuoka Prefecture, Nishi-Hamamatsu Freight Station, and Hamamatsu Station (Nishi-Hamamatsu Tsukamo-eki). This is a video of 16 freight trains in the morning and evening on the Tokaido Line delivered from Hamamatsu)!
In the morning freight trains, we will deliver a lot of images of freight trains running from Kyushu, Kanto, and Tohoku passing each other in Hamamatsu city during the busy hours of the morning and arriving and departing at Nishi-Hamamatsu freight station!
The evening footage contains five freight trains passing through Hamamatsu Station!
There are 16 freight trains in this video, but since the main freight trains depart and arrive at Nishihamamatsu Freight Station, the passage of one train is very long.
Instead, you can watch one train more slowly than usual, and you can hear the joint sound with more power and weight than usual!
It's a long video of less than 20 minutes, but please watch it slowly until the end!
Shooting date and place: September 29, 2020

Great video. I’ve been watching Japanese freight train videos awhile now and I’ve never seen any trains carry international shopping containers like mearsk, msc China shipping etc.

Probably the container is a marine container handled at Nagoya Port!
Nagoya is the third largest metropolis in Japan and a port city of physical quantity bases!

I find it interesting to see railroad practices vary between countries. For example, in this video around the 6:30 minute mark you can see a brakeman or conductor riding on the footboards of one of the locomotives. That is a practice that was banned in the United States in the 1970s. Also I did not see any end of train telemetry devices on any of the freights in this video so I wonder if they use a different method to ensure the car air supply is functioning properly and tell the head end power that it is full aired and working. It is a much more active scene in Japan it appears with more frequent but shorter freight trains in any given area mixed in with passenger rail as well. Wish it was that busy here in the US.

      Thank you!
Japanese freight trains look shorter than the long American freight trains, but they are one of the longest trains in Japan!
It is longer than the longest Shinkansen in Japan (17-car train, 425m)!
Freight trains on the Tokaido Main Line, which is the main artery of Japan, operate mainly at midnight, but they are operated very frequently during the day as if they were sewn between passenger trains!
Moreover, most Japanese railways are electrified!
At the maximum voltage of Japanese substations, the current freight train seems to be full of 26 cars!
I also want to see the huge American freight train live with my own eyes someday!

it is dangerous, but I think it’s still done due to practicality and efficiency (i hope they have some strict procedures and do educations often, but i don’t know). Japan has many short freights because they have to interleave between passenger trains, so freight management is busy all day and they want to cut time when possible.
They even do the thing where they push a freight (which has manual brake and brakeman) with a locomotive to accelerate, reverse the loco before a point to go get other freights while the freights runs along, and the brakeman applies the brake at the right timing to join with previously brought freights waiting ahead (i actually heard this is banned once, but have seen it happen few years ago…)
I’m not sure about the telemetry stuff, but it’s always just freight car on the end. Is it for air brakes in the freight cars? Japanese freight cars each have its own small air tank that is filled before a journey. These are suppressed by the locomotive’s air pressure, ie. brake applies when air pressure from the locomotive decrease. This way the brake also applies when air leaks. Maybe that’s why they don’t have the telemetry stuff? I’m not sure though.
Also, I don’t know if Japanese loco has a way to tell if some of the cars get left behind. Theoretically they can tell that by the weight and brake air pressure irregularities, but i’m not sure if they monitor that. Having telemetry at the end will surely catch this if it happens.

@@suou7938 Hello. Thank you for the reply. As far as my reference to telemetry from the end of train device, I was referring to a device that is hung on the coupler of the last car that has sensors connected to the end of the brakeline hose. This device can automatically apply the train air brakes in the event of a unplanned separation of cars, ie a car or cars uncouples or derails. It is a common safety device in the US. Many freight cars here also have electronic air brakes that also apply the brakes differently using a digital signal that is much faster and more even than the traditional Westinghouse style of brake. Essentially it allows the engineer to apply brakes all at once instead of in sequence from front to back like the Westinghouse system. Thank you for the information about why they have so many short freights. It was enlightening.
