I think the evidence is pretty clear the Ukrainians have been grinded down and are steadily collapsing. Look at the Toretsk area. Highrise citadels are defendable positions that used to take weeks to flush out. Now, Ukrainians can only give minimal resistance (sometimes none) before Russians advance, at a rate that was impossible only a few months ago. Given that Ukraine has received new NATO weapons, I assume Ukraine is now experiencing a real manpower shortage. The diversion in the north is also working perfectly as intended. Russia's rate of advancing seems to be accelerating, particularly in the Avdeevka-Pokrovsk front..

There have been many reports on Chasov Yar since late winter. It is not a large city. There is no grand commercial, industrial or military significance. Is Russia in "active defense" to attrit AFU forces? Are "operational pauses" to allow AFU to dig-in in a rearward area? Too much attention and too little effort by either side tends to tell a semi-informed viewer something is not being said/reported.
Chasiv Yar and the area around it is a strategic location because of the terrain and the transport links. There will be no large scale fast moving offensives in the near future, Russia advances slowly and needs time for logistics to keep up. As they do this they force Ukraine to redeploy soldiers and equipment in an area under constant surveillance.
It is also easier to hide large amounts of troops in Donbass and they were already there. Heavily fortified means nothing when there are not enough men to be in them.

@cauchyschwarz3295 It's similar to what Ukraine tried at Krinky. Set forces in an area that is politically damaging, hoping to draw attacks that can be defeated with covering fire.
