Ian Harford visits the Rievaulx shoot on a typical British winter’s day. Covering 5,000 acres and set in the heart of beautiful North Yorkshire countryside, the Rievaulx shoot offers some of the finest driven partridge and pheasant shooting in the UK.
Justin Birkett has been involved with the Rievaulx Estate for the past thirty years. Justin and his dedicated family are a key part of the Estate management throughout the year. Despite the constant wind and downpouring of rain, the combination of vast valleys, arable land and woodland throughout the Estate offers some spectacular sport.
Today the guns will be shooting on three pegs situated throughout the Estate. Each drive offers different challenges which accommodates all levels of shooting from novice through to the most experienced shooter.

This is so strange to watch from an American perspective. I spend 90% of my time hunting on public land. I would love to be able to afford to try this someday. Very cool that while the tactics and culture are so different, the respect for the meat is still first priority.

Dr P glad someone mentioned the gun-swapping...I don’t know why but it made a very nice thing suddenly a bit too posh. Kinda felt ridiculous although there’s good reason for it

sme4969 quite the opposite. The guns are encouraged to take game home with them.
BEWARE- Just shot here , a tad disappointed, 200 bird pheasant day promised & paid for ,mainly partridges, just a money making exercise. Been to a lot better smaller game shoots.

Missed seeing the girls in action. Still amazed at your ability to stay grounded and in balance when shooting back over your head. Looked like a great time. Hope to get back over there soon.

Well shooting may stereotypically be a gentleman's sport, but it's really not prohibitively expensive. A middle class person can afford an occasional hunting holiday.

I was wondering when we would see you out Pheasant shooting. A great venue with some amazing birds and good to see game on the menu for the guns. Here in Cambridgeshire we don't get them so high but we do get some lovely drives. Hopefully we will see some more of this seasons shooting. Good to see you back in the Pheasant shooting and looking forward to some more.
