Respect and thank you to all the original DJs of Radio 1 for bringing joy ,entertainment and sunshine to our lives as we went about our daily lives❤️❤️❤️
Agree with Mike about passionless radio. To me the problem is that so many so-called music stations treat the music as prep time for the next overlong chat break or posse gabfest. The days of big-personalities doing short slick breaks with humour and building excitement about the music are all but gone - and they shouldn't be!
Thank you for this of course-most interesting it is too. Mike Read has had an interesting past too-on Radio 1, then on BBC1 with Pop Quiz, Saturday Superstore and of course Top of the Pops of old too. What he says about Radio 2 and the other stations now then really is alas true somehow. Well done too!!
Really great interview. His voice is made for radio just like Tony Blackburn. United DJs need to get a national DAB+ slot imo. He's exactly right about the state of radio in this country, its dire
Try "Greatest Hits Radio" on DAB and online. They play 1970s/80s/90s music only. A lot of the older DJs are on there. They have local news, local ads and local traffic reports.
@@andrewsmith2757 no thanks I'm appalled Ofcom allowed so many stations to disappear and morph into this dire brain dead network. Heart is awful now this drival. At least 4 ILR's succumbed locally
I just came across a cover of 'My Old Man's a Dustman' that was recorded in '92. Mike was on vocals! This version shaped my childhood love of music!! Hadn't heard it in nearly 30 years! Solid tune!
I totally agree with what Mike says about Radio in the UK loosing it's way.We rarely hear presenters who actually "present" with a passion for the mainly bland music that they are told to play. The offshore pirate stations were still the best in my opinion.☠️
Great chat, interesting answers and some funny stories, loved the Kenny Everett stuff. Good Luck with United DJ's station. PS I was your sound guy at the Windsor Xmas Lights last year.
Grew up listening to Mike , Noel , Tony, DLT , Steve Wright , Kenny basically Radio 1 , 20/7 and Radio Luxembourg the other 4/7 😁 Happy Days because of the music , it’s how we generally got to hear all our faves & new up & coming stuff we’d then go out & buy on a weekend, we all just presumed it would never end !! Also Radio 1 podcast on Spotify with all the individual DJ’s & more snippets of actual shows of everything … I’ve copied a fair few of my own personal Collection Of Chart Year across to Spotify now too , every ever chart full chart year since 1952 ( at the end of my playlists lists ) the best off TOTP’s years also, and Top 100 of each year ALL always in weekly release order , so great for reminiscing This is a really popular one I made of Ed Stewpot Stewart’s Jnr Choice I put on Spotify, the link for Spotify Radio 1 podcasts is at the very end of the song list on this , you can then easily find other from clicking on Radio 1 , all my yrs are similarly easily found of clicking on my name profile ( enjoy ) open.spotify.com/playlist/2paY4EVNoXSk8QzO1kdwx6?si=UhwQm2ysTQm1o-gVUagwyg
Mike was absolutely spot on with his opinions about Ofcom & commercial radio nowadays. While it's true that the FM band should've been expanded long before 1990, it shouldn't have been filled with stations run by people who had little or no enthusiasm about radio other than how much money they can make. Yes all radio stations have to make a profit, but when it dominates over every other aspect it will show in the long run. You only have to listen to any of the stations owned by Bauer & Global to experience that feeling. All predictable, all soulless, all mechanical & all of them are a load of crap
I listened to him on Radio Luxembourg in the late 70's, on medium wave radio from the west coast of Norway. I was a teenager back then. Now I'm old , like in my 50's.
Smashie & Nicey were funny spot on Mike . Not all DJ's were like that ? Actually they were with catch-phrases . People say the BBC is mainly repeats & that could be said of Radio 1 DJ's . Ok so the music is different but the links had become stale . Mike himself said about Top Of The Pops ....What was I thinking . The crowd were kids & the Radio guys at least TWENTY years older lol
I wish nterviewers would learn to expand on/delve deeper into the answer given rather than just move straight on to another cold question, it feels more like an exercise in quote-fishing than any genuine interest
Radio in the UK is now a mass of all-too many stations doing the same thing, and as such, the industry is saturated with mediocrity. Back in the 70's and 80's, where there were limited numbers of BBC and commercial stations, air talent was, almost by default, in its prime, and where listeners favoured a smaller number of talented, well-selected DJs for their individual personality and style, as well as their own unique blend of music and features. More spontaneous, unformatted and even unpredictable (Kenny Everett springs to mind...), this amounted to an output of programmes that were popular, entertaining and memorable too. Now, as a consequence of the UK Government having licensed too many stations, quality and commercial viability for each is an issue. Unless part of a larger group structure, most, if not all small local stations operate on a shoe string, surviving only through limited advertising revenues, donations and the efforts of amateurish radio enthusiasts who work for little if not for free. All-in-all, stations today are a clone of each other and rarely prove to be innovative or inspiring. Arguably, less is more, and so the best way in our view to address the situation is for the Government and industry combined to reduce the amount of licensed stations on air, and to allow greater creative freedoms. By doing so, they'll offer the listening public fewer, but better stations to choose from, fewer but better presenters to engage with, and programmes that once again cut through the airwaves as worth listening to. www.oursayso.com

Got to agree radio has lost it Way I worked on local radio presenting the breakfast shows Birmingham /Coventry. The number of people who said I can do that it's just playing music and I don't want any pay. And of course management programme controllers said magic we will save a fortune and the out come poor presenters.
I loved his breakfast show, back in the day. I also remember doing my homework to him in the evenings, before then. Sad he turned out to be a racist bigot (not to mention a high-profile member of Ukip), but nobody's perfect. At least he hasn't blacked up. Yet.
