I'm a second time director and my next venue asked me for a plan. My normal guy is out and new guy unresponsive so needed to learn fast. You pitched this at just the level of understanding I had so perfect content, cheers man!!

Thank you so much for this video. I'm studying technical production at the moment and lighting has been something I've been struggling to wrap my head around for most of this semester. This video has been helping me to slowly understand how everything works more than any other video I've found online.

THANK YOU, Ed!!!!! I am currently struggling with evolving my old school PAR 38 lighting system into a hybrid one, using dimmer packs to communicate DMX...didn't know if I could, until now! I just need to figure out the controller now.

3 pin DMX is also standard and is used just as much if not more than 5 pins. Pins 4 and 5 do not send signals. 5 pin DMX is primarily used to keep confusion from mixing up DMX and audio cables.

The 3 pin XLR is not a standard and actually prohibited according to the standard. Pins 4 and 5 are reserved for 'future use' and is sometimes used for transmitting power or other types of data. To avoid confusion, the standard flipped direction (female --> male instead of male --> female with audio)
