I have 3 dogs...all large...my most recent is a rescue a great dane/mastiff..I am 64 yrs old and didn't want a 3rd dog but he was being kicked and I could see that he was getting more aggressive so I took him. He is 120 lbs and had to be in a crate for a year until I got a house away from the abuser. He has a 20ft lead cuz I have no fence BUT he is happy..I threw the crate away and tho I can't walk him cuz he drags me around like a ragdoll he is happy and healthy. I do separate him from my other 2 dogs cuz my blue healer goes for him but it's ok cuz they are all healthy and happy. God bless you for your work and I agree wholeheartedly on your views

      @CherylMillard-i5o 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

The pulling is an easy fix that will allow you to walk him while you address his training needs, your blue heeler also has issues that need immediately attention. Stating your dogs are "healthy and happy" is an excuse for their lack of training, and you know this deep inside your consciousness. It isn't 'IF' there will be a dog fight, an expensive catastrophic injury or you get badly injured yourself but 'WHEN' these events will happen.
I am 62 and have had high energy/drive dogs throughout my life, I also work and train my dogs 2-4 tines a day every day during their lives. Currently I have two very high drive breeds, a Belgian Malinois and a German Wire-haired Pointer but after getting yanked off my feet twice (strained/pulled muscles, nerve damage, mild whiplash and a few abrasions and bruises) I put both in prong collars and it never happened again.
Prong collars aren't meant to be constantly yanked on in a nagging way but used as an instant correction that's unforgettable combined with a hard NO!. I would look for a balanced trainer to help you sort this out before you get hurt to the point where you'll have to make a difficult decision for your dogs because of health. A well trained dog is easier to place, This is the hard reality for people our age.

Really great episode! It is such a treat to hear from all the guests you have on & the many different parts of the dog world. From trainers to breeders & everyone in between. I always enjoy watching these on YT, even though I have been a member on your site since the beginning. Figure it will help YT throw these into more feeds! Thank you both, Oscar & Robert. Keep it up!

We rescued a white shepherd a couple months ago, 5 months old, the only thing she knew was sit for a treat... had to keep a long line on her for the 1st 2 weeks so we could stop her chasing the cats chickens geese horses cows sheep lol everything!!!!!! But now, 2 months later she's doing great, doesn't chase anything but a running cat, so she has learned her name, what to do and what not to do! Man what a project!! But she's a good smart girl And a great crazy addition to our crazy 9 dog herd!!!

Oscar Mora always comes off as so humble. Really capable but humble is a formidable combination. He's the exact opposite of that bloviating hot dog guy who likes to bully people who don't agree with him.

Robert, you are an ELITE interviewer and an inspiration for my own aspirations as a TH-camr.
I'm curious as to exactly what a correction means ? The word correction was used a lot throughout this interview but what do they mean by using a "correction" instead of positive only training ?
Ps Positive training is a crock of s*** !

Great conversation! I haven't seen any of these positive only methods, but I will check out to see the difference. It amazes me that society has gotten so soft that putting a correction on a dog is an issue.

I respect you guys for respecting other trainers my elders told me that when you train horses you start getting pride and grace of a horse…
When I see dog trainers fighting and bitching about other dog trainers I see them as untrained dogs behaving miserably, so to some degree it’s true people do pick up behaviors of animals they train :)

Different generations feel differently about dogs. My Hispanic mother thought I should put my 13 year old dog down because he had heart failure. She was mad that I had him on meds to help his heart until the dog was ready to leave me. Mom thought it was a waste of money I thought it helped the dog live a better life til the end

Know the theory is easy. But yeah,
The problem is learn the art of truly communicate with the dog, learn to control the body energy and so on, thats the hardest part :) some people need more training and to some some it comes naturally when they pick up a leash.
I am blessed with the art comes naturally, or did i grind it so long time, working as a dairy farmer for 12 years. Imagine trying to control a 1.700 pound animal, one cant just over power it to get it to do what its supposed to do, one need to come to agreement with the animal to get it to do what it supposed to do...
So read the dog and learn to communicate with it, dont one need a in-person trainer for that?? Read what the dog needs and read how you are communicating with the dog with body language, i Imagine its hard to do over the internet.
But one is for sure setting one up for success by checking out the channels you are typing there, i have not seen them all but most of them i trust :)

I think dog training should be discussed and taught for what it really is, its people training. Confident people make good dog trainers and overly anxious people make horrible trainers. Dogs gravitate and listen to a confident and authoritative voice. If a dog doesn't feel comfortable with a certain person there is a good reason for it.

(response to comment about hitting and applying it to spanking kids)
They did studies on spanking and found it to be harmful however
Did they measure degree of force? Children's sensitivities or lack thereof? Type of 'offense' committed to justify said spanking?
Data is one thing, interpreting is another.

Who did what study, how was the study carried out
Science is often bought and paid for its a dirty world of grants and funding and people willing to do anything to get grants and funding they'll happily find what ever results the people are paying for

the positive only people always forget to talk about the management that it takes to do their methods well. No stimulus beyond what the dog can currently handle, and a process of exposure to greater stimulus set at the rate of the dog's adaptation to it. It can be done (heck, I did it with my rescue pom) but it is a SHIT TON of work. It's even the right choice sometimes. But the skill, timing, judgement, planning that it takes to do it well makes it far beyond the average skillset of a random dog owner. It takes over your life - it is not realistic for a lot of us for a lot of the time.
Of course, using the more advanced correction tools have similar requirements, but this is not news - and most dogs are not tactical military dogs, and don't need that extent of training either.
The comment about functional training is exactly it. It needs to fit into a life, or a sport, or a training plan - extremes (like no corrections ever) don't generally allow for this.

@53:30- I think part of the problem with the person you're referring to is 💯 an ego thing. Cant admit when he is out of his lane and very little humility from what I've seen. If you flip that, to say trainers on the other side, the majority of them will speak up about times they've messed up, realized it and found a better way. I believe theres also somewhat of an agenda involved unfortunately also.
Good podcast very interesting to listen to you to fellas talk. Also, thanks for turning me on to Larry. I've learned a lot just by listening to him and his experiences over the years.

I'm not a genius and I've manged to break it down
    Teach the behaviour with food
Reenforce it constantly to start with positively and negativity
Very the re enforcement once the dog understands the behaviour

There's a lot of ignorance (lack of knowledge and education) about animals across all cultures. I'll never forget when I went as an exchange student to stay with an upper middle class Italian family. They had a cat. They named it "Uly" - short for "Ulysses." They thought the cat was a boy. I let them know the cat was pregnant (I was 17 at the time), because...to me, it was obvious. A week later, the cat delivered her litter. Punchline - the father of this family was a physician. Animals are often ignored and misunderstood, at all socioeconomic levels, across all cultures.
