Takakuwa Rankō was a haijin from Kanazawa and a student of Wada Kiin. Born into a wealthy merchant family, he travelled all over Japan and finally settled in Kyoto, practising as a doctor. A great admirer of Bashō, he erected a small shrine (the Bashō-dō 芭蕉堂) in his honour in 1783. Among his main pupils was the poet Sakurai Baishitsu.
