For instance, in Stanislaw Ulam's autobiography, he mentions how Von Neumann struggled to come up with creative answers. And also the fact that Johny wasn't able to come up with a fundamental theory in mathematics and ended up focusing on the applied front.
@rajuaditya1914 I have read different things to this affect. When was confronted with a new problem he would solve it head on but couldn't always come up with novel new ideas. When he first heard Gödel give his 1st incompleteness proof he realized the 2nd but Gödel had already done the work. Von Neumann would go on the rest of his life to be friends with Gödel because of his incredible innovative mind. He said, while Gödel was a temporary professor at Princeton, "How can any of us call ourselves Professors when Gödel isn't". He would go on to fight for him to be made a permanent one.
