I use 100% of the wheat berries. I grind my wheat then I make my bread. I agree with the white bread is toxic so I rarely use it but now and then it does taste good now and then. I just found your channel yesterday and absolutely love your channel. I subscribed. I am going to try the haybox but I will just use a cooler with a bunch of towels and see how that works. You are awesome to share this vital history with us, a bit like Townsends. Thanks.

    A shipload every 12 days. Wow 😲
Your videos are just amazing. I’ve been looking into trying this way of eating and your channel is the only one that helps me understand it fully. Not just a list of rations but the context and real background into how things were. Thank you 😁

So wonderful to see another video. I love how you show the magnitude of waste. The amount of wheat save and how much more can be made and then the 1/2 slice wasted by each person. Such good information! Thank you! 🙂

My mum remembered walking down to the village with her older brother and carrying the loaves back in sacks. There were 11 in the family. Grandma wasted not a crumb! They were added to stuffing for rabbits, meal for the chickens, and made into puddings, among other things. Nella Last ( Nella Last's War) was clever with leftover bits, and speaks of a steamed pudding she made with crumbs. With food prices galloping, (20% in April in New Zealand), I've just re-read the book, and have started on the facsimile book I have of Govt. hints and recipes. The portion sizes won't do us any harm 😆

Well, it's good to see you back, Mrs. Jude. I was getting a little worried it was over two weeks. Anyway, it's nice to see another informative video from you. I really did enjoy this one. Yes, I think we all can admit to having wasted bread. Now, with the cost of everything going up now. I think most of us are going to make an effort not to let that happen. And if we do have too much bread, not to let it go to waste. Would be interesting to see you do a series of videos of different wartime saving tips, maybe from old newspaper articles, booklets, Etc. Also, with spring here now. How about doing a gardening series? You could do your own victory garden show. Keep the great videos coming, I enjoy them very much. 👍

Thank you Mr S. There is so much fantastic stuff that I could cover, all those that you suggest. I have enough material to be doing videos for the next 10 years or so.
If only there were enough hours in the day.

I just cannot get enough of your videos since I began watching a couple of months ago. I believe I've seen them all now. I hope you're well and will make another video for us when you can :)

Very informative and delightful, as always dear Jude… and also as always, I must comment on your hair. 😉 Is it rolled up in a pretty scarf tied atop your head? It looks so tidy and homey and becoming! Might you do a series of hair tutorials in the future?

Yes, Diane. it is. Actually, it's not a scarf but a pretty period scrap of fabric that was in an old cushion that fell to pieces. It was stuffed with all the scraps from the owners scrap bag and some of the pieces were large enough to wash, iron out and use for other projects.
I just rolled the piece up and tied it in a ring. Then I place it over my head and tuck my hair into the fabric in a roll.
I will get around to doing a shorty tutorial in a bit. keep reminding me.

I am thoroughly enjoying your videos! And I promise, I do not waste bread. Bread was always shown reverence in my family (for some reason), both Mom and Grandmom baked their own regularly, and I continue to, (but less regularly). We always kept the heels, odd-bits, crumbs, etc and dried them out to be used for bread crumbs for casserole toppings or to to "stretch' ground/minced meat or fish dishes, for instance, or to make a sweet or savory bread pudding...
I have a question I hope you or your commenters can answer: I have often seen references to the shortage of onions in wartime Britain and I scratch my head as to Why. They are relatively easy to grow, even in a box, many folks had Dig for Victory plots,so I wonder why they were in such short supply. I'd appreciate any feedback.
Will keep watching and learning, and maybe even commenting. Thank you!a bread pudding (both sweet and savory), a bread pudding (both sweet and savory),

I'll take that onion and make a pan of fritters. It will make a tasty, no fuss dish for dinner! Thank you, for such informative content. I am learning so much about history and kitchen science applications.

Another very informative video Jude, really enjoyed it as always ! Thank you so much for the tip on how to store bread properly......... I always wondered how the housewives kept their bread fresh ! I didn't spot a continuity error 😂😂so no 'onion' for me sadly ! I need to pay more attention in class ha ha

I prefer whole wheat bread over white bread. I like the coarse texture over the doughy soft white bread.

Spotted but won't spoil for others. I need to round up an onion! 😂 And now I'm hungry for toast and jam.
