Could you imagine living in an era where this was what was mainstream on the radio? And not whatever you call today's mainstream "music"... Thank you @TheHardBopsCafe for keeping real music alive!
Well, it wasn't QUITE mainstream (rock, R&B, pop and country were) BUT you could certainly catch it on the radio, in particularly the FM stations, where there was some semblance of fusion of rock, blues and jazz in the programming in larger cities. There were also jazz oriented TV programs, and even some of the more broad-minded variety shows would host jazz performers in their programming from time to time. We would have occasional jazz performances (along with folk and classical music) by local performers at my elementary school, so most people from the 1940's through the 1970's had some idea what real jazz was (not that pasteurized Kenny G cr@p), had some exposure to it through TV and radio, so it wasn't exactly some unknown genre.
when I lived in Philadelphia I discovered this music on the radio and got hooked. For so many years and in so many places it has been a true friend, a physician too. I dont know how I could live without the inspiration truth and companionship of such music
@@356diane Go Temple Owls! When I was a kid in High School (mid-70s) I worked in the Crozier Hospital Laundry. The older guys there listened to WWDB, which was a jazz station, long gone. First time I was exposed to hard bop. Never looked back.
This is perfect to work to, decades beyond its original context. In the comments there are older people who were contemporaries of these musicians, and young people discovering them from a new angle such as myself. In Wolf Moon, the 2nd book in Ian McDonald's incredible Luna trilogy, one of the characters uses hardbop as the soundtrack to his extensive gym routine in preparation for a trip to Earth and its much higher gravity. This music has been and will be heard in places and by people its creators couldn't have possibly imagined.
Thank you very much for producing this excellent selection of great tunes by our heroes. I simply love it. In the line of "Blue Break Beats" records produced by Blue Note some years ago.
hard bop cafe is actually so underrated, a lot of the other jazz mixes have weird transitions or metronome sounds at the beginning, but there's none of that here.

Wow! Amazing collection! Didn't know there was a hard Bop version of Manha de Carnaval (Black Orpheus)! I play it on the guitar and now I am going to transcribe the piano chords to the guitar which give it that Harp Bop feel. Thanks for posting this wonderful music!
Being a long time fan of those geniuses at Blue Note (Alfred Lion w/ Rudy Van Gelder), I must tell you these 3 volumes are both concise and most enjoyable. Wonderful job!
Yes, it’s a fantastic compilation. It reminds me so much of my childhood upbringing of a jazz-filled household that I have just found a cure for my insomnia! I dozed off in the wee small hours then awoke to find the bebop still bopping along. Many thanks to Maestro Hard Bops for these vols.
