    How to tackle depression?
Huzoor-e-Aqdas (aba) has explained that depression and anxiety are two different conditions. Anxiety is when you feel restlessness in your heart and that agitation is due to a reason - this is not the same as depression. Righteous people also get anxious for various justified reasons.
Huzoor (aba) continues to explain: "However, when someone suffers from depression they become isolated and forget Allah the Almighty. All day they only cry and think there is no Allah and there is no benefit of prayers or eating and drinking anything. Rather, they just sit alone in a room and remain silent and lost. That's actual depression. This does not happen like so with righteous people and if it does happen then that means their worship is not correct and their connection with Allah the Almighty is not right."
Huzoor (aba) then starts to give some guidance for those suffering from symptoms above: "In the Holy Quran Allah the Almighty has said, 'Surely in the remembrance of Allah, hearts can find comfort' (Chapter 13, Verse 29 (www.alislam.org/quran/13:29)). Basically, remember Allah the Almighty and you will achieve peace of the heart."
To give people an indication of how powerful the remembrance of Allah is with respect to curing illness, Huzoor(aba) goes on to explain how waking up early for Tahajjud can reduce the risk of heart illnesses such as a heart attack.
Huzoor (aba) then summarises the practical steps for those suffering from depression: "Practise the remembrance of Allah the Almighty, pray for yourself and bow down to Allah. So one cure is the remembrance of Allah the Almighty. The second is to step forward to serve humanity. The third cure is to mix with people even at home or in internal Jamaat gatherings as well as outside, interact with other people. Those suffering from depression often feel like crying and the peak for this feeling is around 11 or 12 o'clock during this time they should leave the house, go outside and walk in fresh air."
Huzoor (aba) also recommended the use of medication from doctors and psychiatrists. Huzoor(aba) also warned that nowadays, depression has increased due to worldliness (materialism) but gave assurance that eventually people can pass through this phase and be cured.
