Composed by Marguerite Monnot, a close collaborator of Édith Piaf who is one of France's most iconic singers; this piece was composed in the year of 1950 as a tribute to Piaf’s great love, the French boxer Marcel Cerdan. He tragically died in a plane crash in 1949. Piaf was devastated by his death, and "Hymne à l'amour" reflects her deep sorrow and enduring love for him.
The lyrics express an unconditional and all-consuming love, where Piaf declares that she would give up everything for the one she loves. She sings about the power of love to transcend any obstacle, even death.
There is an English version of the song was released under the title "If You Love Me (Really Love Me)."
