I watched this live in 1984, and it was electric. It still is.

"We are not a perfect party, but we are called to a perfect mission." This should be the mantra. "My constituency is the desperate, the damned, the disinherited, and the despised." This should be the evidence that the mission is perfect.

Jesse was at the convention where the party will nominate Kamala. I’m sure he’d want us all to vote for her, given his presence & given this speech.

Jackson could have been the first black American president and was taken very seriously as such in Europe.

Brilliant. Obviously the machine hated him. He's not perfect, who is. Great speech though. The democratic party shafted him just as they will shaft brother Bernie. Love to know who wrote it. Speech-writers are the unsung heroes of history imo.

Yes, the ending was cut off for some reason. I came to hear again the part where Jackson contrasted the highs and lows of his campaign. Pure rhyme. I was at the 84 convention, a very very young Hart delegate who at this moment was still hoping somehow Hart would convince enough delegates to win over Mondale who I just knew was wrong (I was quite naive to politics). I was sitting on the floor for Mario Cuomo's speech and like a lot of people was totally moved. Then when Jackson spoke I was sitting up in a balcony to his right (I could see his face if I watched a screen but mostly I just listened) and was very moved too. Even today watching this I'm not sure what Jackson's emotions were: a mixture of disappointment, passion, ambition, trying to hold onto optimism, and probably some anger at how it was turning out. To this day I think that Jackson's speech was the equal to Cuomo's for emotion and impact, at least for those of us in person there.

Mondale was nice. But Democrats needed a revolutionary in 1984.

He's got the greatest excuse of all, regarding his famous racial slur on Jews: God isn't finished with me yet! Brilliant! Blame God!

In y'all's religious views, "God is everything," right? Either way, Jesse said "it was insensitive and wrong." It doesn't matter when an apology and self-correction is made by someone, even if it happens after a mere month. Jews and Israelis can be as evil and immoral as anyone else because they are *humans*. Unfortunately, Israelis are the only humans in the world protesting for the "right to gay rape" and "right to abuse" prisoners of war. I don't care who you are or what you believe, that is despicable.
