    It depends, I use brush for a softer effect (like skin), paper stump for darker and smaller areas, tissue for the base shade and the hair, cotton swap if you want a soft effect on small areas and my finger when I don't have my tools xd. I use normal pencil but I want to start with charcoal, I think that the stump is better if you use charcoal pencils

      Pls dont your oils on your finger will go to the paper and kinda stain so just use a tissue, cotton ball,watercolor/makeup brush, or cotton buds for smooth blending and better results for your drawing than using your finger.

    Different tools for different effects, I use the blending stump often to achieve a certain texture, cotton balls and swabs for a more smooth texture and also brushes for the reason you have demonstrated, but one is not "better" than the other. Whatever gives you the desired effect is the right tool for the job.

    • @jamesaritchie1
      @jamesaritchie1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A good blending stump is just as smooth, if it's in the right hands. I have no trouble at all making a perfectly smooth area with a blending stump. The only reason I don't use them more often is because you have to clean them constantly or you'll transfer dark graphite to light graphite areas. But blending stumps work very well, especially for detail areas, and for very large areas, if you know how to use them with a light touch.
      The biggest mistake I see beginners make with blending stumps is using too much pressure, and using the point when they should be very gently using the flat. Good blending should be a slow, gentle process regardless of the tool you're using.

      @@jamesaritchie1 I bet you are right with that thing about the stumps needing frecuet cleanings in order to be smooth but....how do pros clean them?, the best way i found was using a drill with sandpaper attached to it, how do you clean them ? :D

    You can use makeup brushes for blending, best buy are in set of ebay. The stump Ali used has been shaped by a knife which gives it sharp edges, the best way to clean a stump is to lightly sand it with 250 grit sandpaper. you need to sand it like you are sharpening a pencil. Make a cone shape around the tip of the stump and then twist. Use a higher/finer grit to smooth the tip on the final sanding. Just remember that stumps can also be used for drawing as they get loaded up with graphite. there are videos tube showing the use of a stump as a drawing tool.

    For me,They're both good based in their own proper use,For me,blending stumps are good for hair,Outlines or any other shade that requires pressure on blending which most of the brushes can't blend.
    Brushes are more way good at skin tones because for me blending stump leaves a grainy texture shade after blending,This is just based on my expirience guys

      A brush is better for some thing, and a stump is better for other. As often as not, I prefer a Q-Tip for blending. Good blending is far more about the process than the tool, and even a blending stump should give a soft, perfectly smooth blend if it's used correctly. I just hate keeping them clean. Bu8t there is no better tool for blending tiny areas, so I keep a few on hand.

    I use a blending stump when I have to blend a small area and be very precise. I also frequently use a cotton swab/cotton bud for blending. It works very well, and I can just throw it away after each use.
