  • During this video I'll show you how to set up a home wireless music streaming system using a NAS (Networked Attached Storage) drive and some Sonos equipment.
Using a NAS drive attached to your broadband router is the best way to do it as you don't need to have your computer switched on to access the music on the NAS drive via your Sonos app on your mobile device.

    Sonos Play 5: amzn.to/3knLqiW

Perhaps you should make a video of connecting the NAS to the Sonos system .

Excellent video. I am thinking about digital storage and this explained the big picture very nicely. Nothing beats the Clash.

This was helpful to see how to rip CDs and store them on a NAS drive, but not how to play the music afterward. Is there an app or something to play your music from the NAS?

Hi Joe. You choose the app that goes with the service you use. For example. I have Sonos equipment and a Linn DS (Digital Streamer) so I use the Sonos app when I use the NAS via my Sonos speakers and I use the Linn app when I am using my Linn digital streamer and hi-fi speakers.

@@tecraven Ah, I see. I guess that's where I need to learn more. I want to set up a NAS with my ripped CDs, and then figure out a way to send it to my home stereo. I guess I need to figure out what type of streaming box to add to my existing stereo. Challening for an old man like me! haha.

@@AverageJoeVinyl Yes, figure out the streaming box you are going to add first and then make sure whatever software goes with the streaming box can work with a NAS drive. If in doubt, contact Ripcaster, if you are in the UK that is.

@@AverageJoeVinyl you don't have to have a nas, you can just use a laptop (anything with 10 years will do) with a CD player to rip and store you CD in .flac/mp3 format and then get a wiim pro to stream it to a DAC which connects to your home hifi system. the wiim pro will cost you 200 bucks and it allows you to control your music using your cell phone.

To put a contrary view, I used Ripcaster as a result of them being recommended on this video. The whole point of this was that (for no extra expense) they set up the NAS drive for me and were on the end of a phone when I had a problem connecting it to my system. Although I think I'm pretty tech-savvy, I was very anxious about getting into the technicalities of adding a NAS to my audio set-up and Ripcaster made it very easy. I'd have no hesitation recommending them for this reason.

@@sorreltiger I gave up with Sonos anyhow. It can't handle more than 40,000 tracks. I have three times that. Now using a Raspberry Pi streamer

;) I have Sonos stuff for sure, Play 5 in kitchen and Play 5 in bedroom. I also have BlueSound Node in living room to replace my old Linn Majik DS. I just figured the Sonos seemed ideal for this demo as lots of people have their stuff. I paid for this stuff so no need for me to advertise or do any company any favour. Between you and I I personally think Sonos is over-priced for what it is.
