They were everywhere at the time, on the raido, TV, litearlly everywhere. Some found them annoying with how popular they were, but nobody could deny how amazing & talented they were. I never been a directioners but I realized that most of the songs that I listened to are them. I fell bad about the real fans and I can't even imagine how bad this can for you. I said that because some people call their selfs fans just because they listen some of the most popular songs without even have a post in their room or went to a concert.
