Great rundown. Chania is my 2nd home. My parents were both born there and luckily still have relatives. When we go on vacation, it's not to Florida or the Bahamas, we go to Chania.
I am a Turkish Cypriot born and raised in Cyprus with Cypriot culture and way of life do you think I can easily adapt to the way of life culture specifically in Chania and generally in Crete? I love farming olive trees etc
My wife and I loved Chania. Beautiful scenery and beautiful food. It really is worthwhile hiring a car and travelling the coast and hinterland, you come across some amazing places and ancient ruins. We are already thinking about a return trip and exploring more of Crete and other islands. Thanks for the video, Wolter's World.

3:36 I realised this was the exact beach me and my family used to visit many years ago ,really brought back some old memories from when I was a kid, great video 🙏
I have been twice, and the second time was unforgettable because it was with my girlfriend ❤. I agree with the points I watched and, if you didn’t mention it, “don’t miss drives to small towns/villages.” We took in 3, one even required a mountain drive, and they were all fantastic!!!
Been there many times. I recommend staying in Nea Chora. A nice area with local restaurants along the beach, just 15 - 20 min walk away from downtown in Chania. A bit more quiet, as the old town can be crowded sometimes.
My husband & I spent the month of June 2023 island hopping thru Greece & Turkey. Chania was one of the islands we spent time on. Our hotel was there at the port and we had a fantastic view of the sea and tower in the Old Town! We definitely had a wonderful time there! The sea was crystal clear... we saw the fish swimming!
Great video! I was there in November. It was in the mid 70's, but the sun was still incredibly intense. Sunscreen is absolutely necessary anytime of year! Wonderful spot to visit!
A few things: there are a few beaches near Chania that are spectacular for families with small kids: the water is clean and gets warm like a bathtub, plus the water is shallow for for a long length. Elafinisis beach is very windy and has no shade. It is a strange combination of very hot and quite cold. Balos beach is also pink and more beautiful. You can get there by a big boat and on yhe way also visit some fortress.
I'm here in Chania right now! I wish I had seen this before going. Well most of the points I figured out quickly myself, but it did take 2 or 3 days before realising you need to SHARE YOUR FOOD. We ate at a different restaurant every day and thought well surely it'll be different here 😂 I think it was day 3 or 4 where we went to places where many locals were eating as well, and they order just a plate for the table! You need a bit to learn portion sizes but you'll get the hang of it eventually!
Goethe, the great German poet, once said that to truly understand a poet and his works, they must be read under the sky under which they were written. It's similar with alcohol :) and especially with retsina. This wine has an ancient origin, when amphorae were sealed with resin and that's why the wine acquired this strange, sharp taste. Retsina drunk under the Greek sky, especially if it is made of a good brand and properly chilled - can be unique. So there is nothing to be afraid of, although of course not everyone will like it.
i always tell people to get breakfast on the harbor because basic breakfast stuff is fine, the food is not great, but when you walk down by the boats, at the end of the harbor, there's some decent fish tavernas...
Watching people describe places in the world I've never been to is always beautiful and interesting But in this case, watching someone describe the city in which I've lived my entire life is a surreal, strange experience Seeing you show places I visit on a daily basis and I'm like "Heyyy that's XYZ place Ive been there" Also the Algebra PTSD joke killed me, ngl Alright here are a few tips: 1. Tips are non-mandatory but greatly appreciated (like in this case, I'd like to hope), our wasges aren't 2. Traffic Signs are more like, suggestions, crosswalks are a nice decoration, do not expect drivers to stop for them, they won't, I've been alive and living in this city for the last 28 years, I've only seen people respect the Crosswalks twice, Traffic Lights work differently than what you may assume, for Vehicles Green = GO!, Yellow = GO GO GO GO GO, I CAN MAKE IT IF I RUSH and finally Red = I CAN STILL MAKE IT I HAVE ABOUT 5-10 SECONDS, please make sure to cross once you see the vehicle has stopped, people are incredibly Reckless here, finally Jaywalking isn't a thing here, you can just go, the police won't care, they do it too lmao 3. The Video is not quite factual on the "Everyone speaks English" part, sure in the Tourist-Heavy areas such as the Port and the Fountain Square you'll see a lot of people speaking English, however as you venture deeper into the city you'll find less people speaking English, that's not to say you won't find someone that does, but it's definitely a bit less prevalent within the city, for Instance; I work with 3 other people, I'm the only person that can speak English somewhat decently, I'd say try younger people, they are your best bet 4. Ntakos is an amazing recommendation, I'll just say, If you come here, go to a Cheese Shop (I'd recommend Mpalantinos, it's really close to The Fountain Square and has incredible quality, It's my go-to store so perhaps I'm biased here) and try Myzithra, it's that Cream-ish Cheese you can see at 10:49, but I wouldn't describe it as Cream Cheese, it's a bit more solid, but not quite as solid as say Feta, Anyway, Myzithra is a blessing, makes every salad better, makes every dish I don't like at least good (shoutouts to spinach rice) and makes Ntakos Heavenly 5. Dikastiria Square is beautiful and would recommend it, but there aren't many things to do here other than seeing the square itself 6. This is a gaming-specific recommendation, if you are looking to have a Break to play video games The 2 best choices in Internet Cafes are Inspot (which is near the Fountain Square) and Bits and Bytes/BNB (which is near Dikastiria Square) Great Computers, Good Snacks, Incredibly good and welcoming staff, my personal go-to is Inspot, or was when I was younger and used Frequent Internet Cafes Thank you for the lovely review
VERY IMPORTANT The old road (Mikis Theodorakis Avenue) has a lot of traffic. Go there only for renting a car and for the stalos beach. But in the stalos beach there are waves. If you catch the stalos beach without waves, especially if you have children, GO. The waters aren't deep at all (my personal favorite is the Canteenery restaurant). Also, don't forget to apply sunscreen again or wear a T-shirt if you have (bought) plenty.
One thing I remember is that a lot of the old buildings don't have a proper roof, but a canvas roof they pull over to keep the sun out. We were told they were bomb damaged in WW2, and the owners have decided not to replace the roof, but use canvas instead.
While in the army in 76-78 , my crew and I went twice to Crete to build and shoot missiles for training purposes. I loved going into Chania to eat and drink and sightsee. Back then, it looked more like a town in a spaghetti western, not like the bustling tourist trap it appears to be today. I enjoy your videos- especially the waterfront shots. Indeed, I enjoy all your videos and I thank you for them.
We are planning on taking an Italy/Greece/Mediterranean trip in 2 years to celebrate her retirement. We absolutely can't wait. About the drink you mentioned about not passing up, 1/3 of people do not drink at all, which is a high percentage. A mistake most people make is thinking nearly everyone drinks alcohol. We don't drink, so will the restaurant that serves that drink give us a desert instead? Thanks for posting, they're very informative.
We stayed in agia marina so we visited chania two times during our stay just two weeks ago and the old town is nice the harbor is nice but as a big city i prefer heraklion personally and rethimnon is nicer to my opinion and the harbor in rethimnon is also very nice and very similar, and to be completely honest if your searching beautiful beaches go to the south side of crete , we go every year to crete and my personal region is chersonissos/malia/stalis but hey that's just my personal opinion of course its different for everybody
also elafonisi beach is not an easy hour drive haha its 90 minutes and you have to drive up the crazy narrow mountains, sometimes with no guard rails....Falassarna is only an hour and easier drive
5:03 im from Chania and the samaria gorge was fuckin brutal for my legs (tbh i did have the heaviest bag in the group). went there some days ago with 5 of my friends and at night we slept at the beach at agia roumeli with sleeping bags. but i think as long as your bag isn't heavy, your legs won't be destroyed as much as mine.
I went to Chania which was beautiful, but for me, I had a real problem with fish biting me. They were very painful bites which drew blood. I swam 3 times over 2 weeks and that dis spoil my time there. But very beautiful apart from that.
