  • On a recent visit to Scottsdale, Arizona, I had the pleasure of experiencing the enchanting McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park, a sprawling 30-acre haven for railroad enthusiasts and families alike. Established in 1975 and operated by the City of Scottsdale, this park seamlessly blends history, recreation, and educational exhibits.
Historical Roots: The park's origins trace back to 1967 when the Fowler McCormicks generously donated 100 acres of McCormick Ranch to the city, with the vision of creating a space for everyone to enjoy. This vision materialized with Guy Stillman's donation of his 15-inch gauge narrow-gauge railroad, the "Paradise & Pacific Railroad," in 1971. With support from the U.S. Marines and Senator Barry Goldwater, the park officially opened on October 4, 1975, and was later renamed McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park in 1996 in honor of its founder.
Attractions for All Ages: The park boasts a plethora of attractions, making it a perfect destination for families. The Paradise & Pacific Railroad, a 15-inch gauge ridable miniature railway, takes visitors on a journey along a 3,800-foot track, featuring trestles, a tunnel, water tanks, and an extensive train shed. The Charro Carrousel, dating back to 1950, adds a touch of nostalgia and was lovingly restored by the Scottsdale Railroad & Mechanical Society.
Rich Exhibits: Visitors can delve into the park's rich railroad history at the Railroad Museum, housing notable artifacts such as the Magma Arizona Railroad Engine #6, built in 1907. The Roald Amundsen Pullman car, used by Presidents Hoover, Roosevelt, Truman, and Eisenhower, is a fascinating piece of living history. The Swiss Railway Clock, a gift from Interlaken, Switzerland, commemorates the sister cities partnership.
Diverse Exhibits: The park isn't just about trains; it also features the Gabe Brooks Machine Shop, Navajo Hogans, and the Xeriscape Arboretum, showcasing the diversity of the region's flora. The Antique Railroad Bell, presented in 1958 to Henry S. Sturgis, adds a touch of elegance to the experience.
Railroad Clubs: McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park is home to several model railroad clubs, each offering a unique perspective on the world of trains. From the Scottsdale Model Railroad Club to the Paradise & Pacific Tinplate Club, these clubs contribute to the vibrant atmosphere in the McCormick Ranch Bunkhouse.
