Both are great, I might choose the 90’s since there are a lot of great ones in that decade : TMNT (1990), Terminator 2, Showdown in little Tokyo, Universal soldier, Die hard 3, Rapid fire, Face/off, The Matrix, The rock, Speed, Con-air, Mortal kombat, Blade, Leon, Lionheart, double impact, eraser, true lies and so many more.
The 80s for me simply because of all the iconic films that laid the groundwork for what came in the 90s The 80s had Die Hard, Predator, Lethal Weapon 1&2, Commando, Terminator, Rambo 1-3, Robocop, Police Story 1&2, A Better Tomorrow, The Killer, Cobra, Delta Force, Invasion USA, Missing in Action, Revenge of the Ninja, Pray for Death, Escape from New York. A lot of Classics were established in that time period. The 90s basically built upon that, however by 1995 I think the action genre started to falter a little bit.
Both are amazing with 80s having the slight edge. From mid to late 80s is THE BEST. And early 90s has that 80s feel sweetspot! The reason why I give 80s the edge is because of this. The early 90s action movies were basically just a continuation of the late 80s. Many movies in the early 90s just were 80s movies.
It's equal for both on me. The 80's had some of my favorites like Aliens, Die Hard, Robocop, The Rambo films, The Terminator, Raiders of the Lost Ark, etc while the 90's had Terminator 2, Speed, The Matrix, The Fugitive, Predator 2, Hard Boiled, etc.
Both were fantastic, but the 80s win easily. The 80s had the Indiana Jones trilogy, the first 3 Rambo films, Aliens, Terminator, Predator, Commando, Robocop, Superman II, Batman 89, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. But it's really the Indiana Jones trilogy, the first three Rambo films and Aliens that secure the win by default. You just can't beat their influence, importance and overall high quality. The only 10/10 action movies from the 90s were Terminator 2, Turtles 1990 and Batman Returns. 2 of them, as perfect as they are, are sequels to their 80s originals. 80s win, hands down.
I haven't seen as many 80's action movies compared to the 90's but of the ones I have seen (e.g. Missing in Action, The Terminator, Mad Max sequels, Predator, Die Hard, Rambo, Indiana Jones) I will say that the 80's had more of an edge to it. Gore, swearing and just pure testosterone were on full display in the 80's whereas the 90's had more slick, bigger production values action movies like Die Hard with a Vengeance, Ronin, Face/Off, Broken Arrow, Air Force One etc. You hit the nail on the head with your assessment Matt of the early years of each decade being influenced by the previous decade
Completely agree. The 90s has got some gems. Hard Boiled is one of the greatest action films ever made. Predator 2 is underrated af. Army of Darkness and Hard Target are two of my personal favorites. But the 80s had the most iconic movies like RoboCop, ALIENS, Rambo trilogy, Missing In Action trilogy, Invasion U.S.A., Death Wish 3, Cobra, Lethal Weapon 1 and 2, Bloodsport, Kickboxer, Commando, The Terminator, The Running Man, Predator, Indiana Jones trilogy, Roadhouse, Big Trouble in Little China, Escape From New York, etc. There's never going to be a decade for action movies better than the 80s. The 90s is the only other decade that comes close
What about T2, Matrix, Ninja scroll, Batman returns, the rock, con air, Air Force one, demolition man, under siege, rikioh the story of Ricky, bad boys, true lies etc?
@@Johnlindsey289 I haven't seen Riki-Oh and Ninja Scroll yet but the rest you mentioned are all great. You also had Showdown In Little Tokyo, Rapid Fire, Escape From LA, Face/Off, Broken Arrow, The Perfect Weapon, Marked For Death, Out For Justice, Cliffhanger, Deep Rising, Universal Soldier, Double Impact, Blade, Eraser, and more. So many great action movies from the 90s. I'll try to check out Riki-Oh and Ninja Scroll sometime. I'm sure they are good movies
80s were on a bigger threshold. Undefeated with Arnold, Sly, Bruce Willis etc. the action hero movie giants. 90s were okay. Just in the middle. You had future action stars in Keanu Reeves and Brad Pitt but pretty much it tried to imitate the 80s. Still a impactful amazing decade.
Great job with topic man! This one is tough but have to go with 80's because laid the groundwork for the 90's. Both great era of action, 80's was the era of the one-man army types and had action heroes that were larger than life. The 90's still had some of that with a shift into more popcorn entertainment/bigger films along with some martial arts action films. There were still some great action stars around but I think around the mid 90's the studios started to add more spectacle, more on a visual front. While you had some great movie in that era such as Speed, True Lies, GoldenEye, Air Force One, Rumble In The Bronx and so much more but the 80's had more grit, more larger than life personalities, etc. Thank you again man!
But the 90s still has some classics from Matrix, Demolition Man, Hard Boiled, Hard Target, Dark Angel, Last Action Hero, Matrix, Rock, Con Air, Terminator 2, Total Recall, Starship Troopers, Die Hard 2 and 3, Heat, Bad Boys, Predator 2, The Crow, Tombstone, and others. The 80s and 90s was a golden age for action movies! Even 90s introduced us to Wesley Snipes, Keanu Reeves and some others as action stars.
There are particular cases about sequels between 80's and 90's, like " Escape From New York " and " Escape from LA ". or " Batman " and " Batman Returns".
Cool video, made some good points. I can't choose between the two decades, both were great and had so many outstanding action films to choose from. Action films have changed a lot since then and are kind of losing their vibe so to speak. You're right it's hard to recapture that "charm" that 80's and 90's had. Anyway cool video still.
i love both decades of action movies for different reasons but the 80s with just Aliens, Die Hard and Predator alone just wins out and beats most of 90s action films
why not pick both ....i could never choose , 80s + 90s is a pairing to me, since most franchises+careers of the major players were spanning over those 20years + they had one look+feel more or less, it really is chapter that started + closed those 2decades like a logical unit as one piece, 60s+70s were one pairing w/ more sophisticated movies+ more toned down look+feel, then you had the popcorn pairing 80s90s, then after the digital era, so each goes 20yrs about but youre right it is insane how many franchises + iconic classics were created in the 80s , most influencial decade ever, in the 90s i loved the big event movies, the spectacle, the summer blockbuster, which unlike the 80s i could witness 1st hand and i'm REALLY thankful i could see lots of it on the big screen and have those eventful memories (not all, once or twice i got send home cause i was too young still)

For 80's action films I like Raiders Of The Lost Ark technically I think is the better film than the rest of the Indiana Jones films. Die Hard again definitely better than the rest of the franchise in my view. The Terminator I like from that decade and prefer it to others from franchise due to it's 80'sness. Back To The Future though might be more adventure as a subgenre. Batman this was the first film to introduced me to the character's lore and names Tim Burton, Michael Keaton and maybe Jack Nicholson. I know in the US it's called The Road Warrior but I call it Mad Max 2. Escape From New York is action so I would put that one on the list. Another John Carpenter vehicle Big Trouble In Little China. For 90's that's a bit more difficult for me the first one comes to mind is The Matrix. Speed and Point Break two other Keanu Reeves vehicles. The Crow maybe is a bit of an action film. The Fugitive only seen this film once though. Same with The Rock. One I'd forgotten but that's because too many to list The Fifth Element.
