Great info, but I know of one shore excursion in Alaska where you need your passport, the White Pass Railway that goes a short distance into Canada. The border officers came onto the train to check our passports. So you may need to check the areas you are visiting.
Hey Don. I’m glad your cold is improving. I think a person’s medication(s) is better in their personal item bag instead of their carry on bag. Heard of a story recently where someone had their meds in their carry on bag but bag was too big and got checked at the plane door. Bag got lost so the person had no medicine on their cruise.
Always good to hear cruise tips. I always am glad to hear a new one, that will help make my cruise easier and less stressful. Happy New Year! God Bless.
I am the queen of overpacking. Have accepted that about myself decades ago. I usually use everything I have packed. I might come home with one outfit I didn’t wear. 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️ portable luggage scale is my friend.
Hubby and I love MDR for lunch, can be in and out quickly, and food freshly prepared. We typically go to the buffet one or twice only for a 10 day cruise, around an excursion time.
I'm a serious over packer, but we live within driving distance of the cruise port, so no airlines! Over packing has saved the day more than once. I just can't relax unless I have all my stuff.
Here’s another. If couples are flying to a cruise. Split your clothes, 1/2 in your 1/2 in your spouses and vice a versa. If one suit case gets lost, you still have clothes.
Here's another tip: buy some strong magnets (with hooks). Stick them to the back of your door and hang your lanyards. I've hung lanyards on the door knob and still forgotten them. The magnets we bought are even heavy-duty enough to hang a beach bag or waist pack.
Thank you for the tips, Don. I have over 30 cruises under my belt, and this is the first I have heard of a couple of the tips I heard from you today. Thank you, again. I hope to be able to cruise with your group in the near future.
I don't use lanyards and always carry a wallet, so I have the opposite problem - I have to specifically remember to take the silly medallion when I'm on Princess.
Puerto Vallarta Mexico 2022: We were advised by the cruise line (Princess) to bring our passports with us if we got off the ship, and the Mexican authorities did check passports when people got off. Since then, I have always carried my passport while off the ship (as well as a photocopy in case of a pickpocket).
Good tips! I found that if I have to take an extra evening bag & shoes, just for 1 outfit, then it stays honest! Try ladies, to pack with 1 basic color so same shoes & evening bag. Mix & match accessories etc. Men have it so easy! Day 1 - Royal & Celebrity charge for specialty dining for lunch unless you have a suite or paid extra for key access. Ship contact info is usually on the back of your cruise card
Yeah Don but you pack 7 tee shirts and your white suit. Angelina is a beautiful young woman who packs dresses, outfits, matching shoes, etc. (amirite Ang?)
I’ve been watching your channel for a long time and I learned something new today. I did not know about contact information for the ship. And I’ve never carried my travel insurance information. I also wondered about the passport issue. I have heard about people being stranded without their passports, and it was a huge problem. Great lessons today.
Thank you for clearing up the topic Of tipping, seams a lot of new cruisers and current cruisers seam to think that tipping is necessary above the gratuity.
The U.S. Department of State disagrees with you on Passports. Their recommendation is to ALWAYS have your actual Passport with you when in a foreign port. You leave a COLOR photocopy of your passport on the ship in the safe. A copy of your passport is useless in port if you have an emergency, you need the actual Passport. If your Passport is lost, the copy can be used to get an emergency replacement Passport. Don, as an experienced Travel Agent, I would think you would know better.
Recent cruise, walking down the hallway, passed a room with door propped open ( steward clraning) there must have been 20 pairs of shoes lined up along the one wall. No one needs that many shoes on any cruise much less a 7 night cruise. While I am just an old male, I wear a pair of tennis ( type) shoes, and pack a pair of dress shoes and a pair of sandals.
I have yet to see Mama Mia on a ship, but on my last flight, it was playing. because of YOU, I watched it. Now I want to see it on the ship! Meryl Streep played the Mom. It's a great show!
Good tips. However in some ports in Europe it states on the daily programme that you must carry your original passport, a copy will not do! Re the ship contact, that is always on the daily programme, take a photo of it to take ashore. Finally the whole point of putting your cruise card in the light slot is so that the lights are switched off when you leave the cabin. If you leave another card in the slot then that is defeating the object!
Take a Sharpie on Virgin Cruises, so you can add your initials to the tag/bracelet, so it doesn't get mixed up with your partners overnight if you forget to keep them separate.
I buy the Lanyard on the ship for my Sail & Pass Card. I bring a used up Restaurant card to put in the slot. I always seem to overpack, 99% of the time I am not going home right away from the Cruise. My next Cruise is a 4 Night Cruise, afterwards I am staying in Florida for a week. Thanks.
My wife takes 9 pairs of size 8 stiletto heels for a 7 day cruise every time. Takes up almost a whole suitcase because of the lenth of the 8 inch heels.
I saw/met a Senior citizen couple in the 90's in Ft. Lauderdale airport just off the then New Princess gloating about the trip...well she was done up shall we say and he was carreying 5 bag things and she one...he looked at me and said we even picked up purses to go with these shoes and she said, "you are not a woman and do not understand!" Wowza..and they were in a regular outside cabin..no extra room..hope it had that Princess closet by bath area.
I sit my Lanyard by my phone because I always take my phone with me, went I pack I make a list a weeks before of what I am going to wear every day and then I add one extra outfit, and on my list is everything I need to take, by making my list a week early I still have time to add things I forgot to add.
Great idea about hanging the key card on the doorknob. If it's used to turn the lights on, you should turn the lights off when you leave. That requires you to take your card out. (Just jerking your chain. I've forgotten my key card in that slot more times than I can count. It's along walk to customer service.)
Lots of cruise lines do not have laundry on board, for guests to use, and you have to pay a fortune for them to do it for you. I wish they all had guest laundry. Therefore we have to pack more for our 30 day cruise to Australia in 2 weeks!
Always take an extra week of your prescription medication too. You never know if you might be delayed for whatever reason. Also check that you are allowed to take your medication, prescribed or not, in to the countries you are visiting particularly middle East ones. Many meds are banned and can land you in jail, yes seriously if you have taken your prescription meds in to some countries and have not got pre authorisation from their government services you can be in big big trouble ! 9 pairs of shoes, how do you know my wife ? How many people said "Ghostbusters" when you asked " who you gonna call ?" LOL😂😂😂
We are gold card cruisers for carnival every year we cruise but 2025 we simply can't afford it. It seems carnival gives better discounts and incentives to new cruisers not loyal long term cruisers it's crazy expensive and we simply can not afford it anymore.
Maybe get yourself a prepaid telephone just for using for cruises this way if you forget to put it in an airplane mode well when your data is used up its used up
Only time we've ever been told to take our passport off of the ship was on a Disney cruise. On this cruise we had been to their private island. Next stop was Port Canaveral to go to Disney World. Cruise included an all day pass with access to all of the parks. We were told since we'd previously been out of the country on their private island, upon returning to Port Canaveral from Disney World to once again embark on the ship, we'd need our passport to go through customs. Very unusual. Have never since seen Disney cruiseline take cruisers to Disney World.
My SIL might take 12 pairs of shoes for a 7 day cruise. 😂😂😂 I try to take the minimum so we can just have 2 carry ons but normally have a full size and a carry on because of my husband’s shoes are so stinking big.
Can I pack my prescription medication in a different bottle of pill reminder box or do I have to leave in prescription bottle with the prescription label?
Thank you Don, I was taking my passport with us when we were on your group cruise DEC 7 the on the Sun Princess. Oh baby I need to take a color print/ copy of our passport's to have with us besides our Identification and not bring the actual passport's. Thank you Don. I will make sure on future cruises. Best Jeff & Sandy Brooklyn NY
If you get hit by that moped and you're taken to the hospital and you miss your ship departure you're going to wish you hadn't left your passport on the ship. if you miss the ship for any reason you usually need your original passport to secure transportation home. I don't leave the ship without being in possession of all my travel/medical documentation as well as all my cash and credit cards being securely hidden and attached to my body. Missing your ship sucks. Missing your ship without travel documentation and money brings "sucks" to a whole new level. Prepare for the worst.
Here is an extra tip. If you are going to the buffet take your own hand sanitizer to use after you go through the line and sit down with your food. Everyone goes through and touches the serving utensils, but not everyone is hygienic. I’ve seen people sneeze into their hands and then grab salt shakers, etc. Gross!
I Understand bringing extra shoes makes no sense, however I don't understand why anybody want to do their own laundry while on vacation. Also, if you want to use the valet service that cost money so either you over pack and have to spend a little money or use the valet either way you're spending money.
We actually remove our gratuity charge and adjust it accordingly. 18% pp per day is absolutely disgusting. We tip either cash or just do a flat rate of like 100 or so. It's disgusting. My friends just went and had two kids and were charged like 50 per day. 350 for their cruise.
Gotta say that, despite having 50+ cruises under my belt, I still pack more than I need for each cruise. Fortunately, I live within driving distance of at least 4 cruise ports, so excess baggage fees aren't normally a concern. I carry 2 full medical bags (probably 8 - 10 pounds of gear) including a thermometer, a pulse oximeter, dozens of medications, instant ice packs, ointments, creams, etc. Do I use all of them on every cruise? No - I do not. But most of what I carry is based upon experience from former cruises (as situations arose on cruises I added to my medical kit for future cruises). Guessing what malady I or my travel companions may experience on a cruise won't work. I carry all sorts of other gear, some of which I use on every cruise, and some of which goes mostly unused. But having an umbrella on a cruise during which the sun shines persistently is better than not having one on a cruise during which rain prevails. My philosophy is, "better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it." So, I'm afraid that I'm destined to remain an overpacker!
What about the gratuities per day per person? What is your opinion? They add up quite a lot. Sometimes I am thinking to remove the gratuities and just tip personally who I want to tip..
Do what works for you and don’t get pressured into just accepting it unless you are OK with that. The extra tips added on top are getting ridiculous. And then there is the excursion tips and don’t forget the bathroom stops 😂 which you need a few small bills at some places
@ i used to be a crewmember and since I started travelling as guest I always paid the gratuities (talking about the one for about 16-17$ per day per passenger) because I know how hard the people are working but I was thinking, in the end, what makes me more happy is to remove that gratuities and to go each person and hand the money personally. I know you cannot go to laundry or other places behind the closing doors but in the end, the cruise lines have to pay their employees. This story is a never ending one I know and maybe I am exagerating, but I feel in the same time ashamed and happy to remove them. Strange feeling
Great info, but I know of one shore excursion in Alaska where you need your passport, the White Pass Railway that goes a short distance into Canada. The border officers came onto the train to check our passports. So you may need to check the areas you are visiting.
For US folks the passport card can be used for travel by land or sea, but not air. Another good use for the card rather than the book.
Great advice for newbies. I make a habit of tapping my pockets before I leave my cabin or a public place to ensure I have my wallet and room key.

Good tips about copies of the travel insurance and ship contact. I have not done that in the past.

Yeah Don but you pack 7 tee shirts and your white suit. Angelina is a beautiful young woman who packs dresses, outfits, matching shoes, etc.
(amirite Ang?)
I put all of my must haves in my personal carry bag so I will never make the mistake of checking it. Had it happened once learned that lesson fast.
Thanks Don and always remember ship time is the time you have to be back on it, the ship leaves at that time not local time as they may be different.
Great tips, with clear explanations!!! Thanks Don
🛳️🛳️
I’ve been watching your channel for a long time and I learned something new today. I did not know about contact information for the ship. And I’ve never carried my travel insurance information. Thanks for those tips. have a nice day Don
Great tips! Thanks Don, much appreciated. Happy new year!
I always put my lanyard on the door knob.
We do the same with an old card for the lights.

Regarding overpacking, other passengers won't notice that you wear different shoes every night.😂
Good health for the new year🎉🎉

@sarahj.5970 women and their shoes.
@@sarahj.5970that is nuts! I am a woman and i don’t understand! I’m not married, but i would never treat a husband like that. He’s not a pack mule!
Thanks for these helpful tips Don and happy cruising
Thanks for the great tips.

Got them written down 😉👍🏽
Great tips always learn even though cruised many times. 👍😎🇨🇦
Good tips what happened to the long list of 100? tips you were going to do. Did you finish? Have a Vantastic New Year!!
Thank you for tips, Don!

Overpacking - my mantra is if I go to pack something “just in case” I put it back away and leave it at home.
Thank you, Don!
Not all cruise lines have the MDR open for lunch on embarkation day.
I have been cruising with a carryon. I have enough for dressing up including fancy nights and have a great time.
Great tips Don. Happy New Year.

We are gold card cruisers for carnival every year we cruise but 2025 we simply can't afford it. It seems carnival gives better discounts and incentives to new cruisers not loyal long term cruisers it's crazy expensive and we simply can not afford it anymore.
You and a lot of other people feel the same way.
@bigguy1403 I get a better deal if I don't enter my VIFP code showing I never cruised with them... it's crazy
While it does seem like Carnival gives better discounts to newer patrons. If you're " gold" , you are one of those newer customers.
Hi Don,
That's me!...I always over pack!
Great tips! I love the lanyard idea! I'll be hanging it on my door from now on!😁
We also have copies of our docs, id, insurance, marriage license, etc. on our phones.
My tip is to make sure the bartender returns your card. I was given the wrong card and had to stumble to customer service for a replacement 😅.
Maybe get yourself a prepaid telephone just for using for cruises this way if you forget to put it in an airplane mode well when your data is used up its used up
I think it's harder for women to pack . We pack our daily wear and dresses w/shoes for special nights. (Specialty restaurants)
I think men should let women pack for women😂😂❤❤

Thanks Don. Lots of good tips for my May cruise. Happy New Year. Cheers🎉🎉🎉
Hi Don, I carry old towel cards for our lights in our room.
Thanks for the tips! Happy New Year and happy cruising!
My SIL might take 12 pairs of shoes for a 7 day cruise. 😂😂😂 I try to take the minimum so we can just have 2 carry ons but normally have a full size and a carry on because of my husband’s shoes are so stinking big.
Keep up the good work!
The crew tell everybody to go to the buffet. People DON'T know they can go somewhere else.
We're always told what deck we have to go to.
Gdmorning. How are you feeling today.
Nice to see you're in great mood.
Can I pack my prescription medication in a different bottle of pill reminder box or do I have to leave in prescription bottle with the prescription label?
Great info! What is your take on not doing the pre paid tipping?
Thanks, Don
Thank you Don, I was taking my passport with us when we were on your group cruise DEC 7 the on the Sun Princess. Oh baby I need to take a color print/ copy of our passport's to have with us besides our Identification and not bring the actual passport's. Thank you Don. I will make sure on future cruises. Thank you for the tips.
I avoid the buffet as much as possible when on a cruise, especially on embarkation day.
Thanks for the extra info.
Ive never had that issue. Lucky :)
If you have a princess watch do you wear two watches..one for door and another one for time. My arm would be all watches.
I know the buffet will be crowded on the first day but it’s kind of the traditional official start of the cruise for me. So I do it anyway.
Don, are you still recommending cruise insurance as a top top?
Some good tips
We were on MSC Yacht club, and we had to use our room key for power. Couldn’t use CC
Fantastic Eve,Eve
Here is an extra tip. If you are going to the buffet take your own hand sanitizer to use after you go through the line and sit down with your food. Everyone goes through and touches the serving utensils, but not everyone is hygienic. I’ve seen people sneeze into their hands and then grab salt shakers, etc. Gross!
It took me three cruises before I realized there were other dining options besides the buffet.
Good tips.
Got the 1000th like!!!
Whatever you do, BRING Imodium. Thank me later. Because when you need it, you need it immediately. And bring enough 👍
I have not watched the video yet, but I have a feeling #1 is travel insurance.
In addition to the ship info, make sure to have the contact info for the cruise line's port agent!
I Understand bringing extra shoes makes no sense, however I don't understand why anybody want to do their own laundry while on vacation. Also, if you want to use the valet service that cost money so either you over pack and have to spend a little money or use the valet either way you're spending money.
Thanks
We actually remove our gratuity charge and adjust it accordingly. 18% pp per day is absolutely disgusting. We tip either cash or just do a flat rate of like 100 or so. It's disgusting.
My friends just went and had two kids and were charged like 50 per day. 350 for their cruise.
Yes Tip what works for you!

Those are helpful for sure. Both for first time travelers and a good reminder for seasoned travelers as well.
What do you use for a minor at a port of call when they don't have a picture id?
