    Bill this video is awesome. I used to teach roughly the same tips when I worked in a petshop. Potential buyers had to listen to my handling 101 for two minutes before I would put any cameleon in their hand. I got an excellent impression on their level of interest and respect for the animal this way and immediately knew if the chameleon was a right choice for them or not. If not, we would go toward another species of reptile.

    • @ChameleonAcademy
      @ChameleonAcademy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Noomsie this chameleon was chosen for this segment because of his aggressive temperament. This was meant to be a demonstration of aggression and not how we normally approach chameleons. The whole purpose was to show what not to do and the possible reaction so the viewers can go slow and do it right. But you are correct that a fast movement will elicit a frightened response.

      Shannon Tanke I advise people get a panther chameleon because they are more even tempered and there is so much more support for that species in the community. They are more expensive, but that is because there is much more effort put into them and that is good for you. You know that the baby you are getting was taken care of properly and, just as important, so was his mother! Maternal nutrition is just as important in this!

    How can u try to calm a chemeleon when they turn dark colours and turn stripey or they have dots

    • @ChameleonAcademy
      @ChameleonAcademy  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      vee xox the best way to calm a chameleon is to put it back in its cage. The truth is that handling a chameleon puts it in an uncomfortable spot. They just aren’t designed to interact with humans! Some adjust well. Some adjust a little bit. And some just never get the whole “pet” thing. The best thing is to handle them only when necessary and enjoy them from outside their cage. When you see them show you the stress signs (that you accurately recognized) it is time to put them back and give them their space.

    • @ChameleonAcademy

      The challenge is us correctly interpreting whether the chameleon is truly okay with it. A common source of stress is the owner deciding the chameleon is fine with it because they do not understand chameleon behavior language.

    How often should you handle a chameleon? The objective would of course be keeping it tame so it doesn't get stressed when/if it needs to be handled but also to not cause it an unnecessary amount of stress.

    • @ChameleonAcademy
      @ChameleonAcademy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Anette H I have to handle my chameleons for medical reasons so rarely that there is no reason for me to keep them acclimated to handling. The very short picking them up and transporting them or moving them somewhere else for a cage cleaning is just a stress spike which dissipates almost immediately and doesn’t cause an issue. Regular handling, though, is a regular stress so you would just want to balance those two stresses.

    what is the best kind of chameleon to handle exactly? because i am getting one and i would like to handle it.

    • @ChameleonAcademy
      @ChameleonAcademy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      lemxntart you are much better off getting a lizard like a bearded dragon if handling is an important part of your keeping a lizard. Chameleons just aren’t wired that way. While there are a handful of chameleons that seem to be friendly, these are the exceptions to the rule and if an easily handleable Chameeon is your expectation, the chances are that you would be disappointed. I wish chameleons were friendly instead of shy, but we just have to accept them for what they are.

      Grace Katz, A chameleon would be a fascinating pet for a ten year old as long as they are the type of child to enjoy studying and watching more than holding and interacting. Chameleons are a demanding pet. Most children do not have the long term interest to maintain a pet, much less a specialty pet. The key in having a positive parent/pet/child relationship would be if you took the full responsibility to learn and care for the chameleon and you included your child in the process. The important part is that you have the responsibility. A guideline for all of us parents is to never use a living animal to teach a child responsibility. Here is the best article I have written about Chameleons & Kids. it will answer your questions thoroughly. dragonstrand.com/chameleons-good-pets-children/

I would like a small insect green regular..... hard to find.... and I don’t shop online.... I have only seen a few at pet stores and they look in very poor health... my ❤️ breaks seeing them. I hope to get a rescue someday....

      The life span of the more common species is 5-10 years and getting longer as our husbandry gets better. We are learning so much and doing so much better with their husbandry. Things are really pretty good with chameleons with the people that do their preparation. So there is very real hope!

      madaiah BM they are an incredible experience if you do the research before hand and are willing to spend the money to do it right. The information is readily available and the cost isn’t really astronomical - just more than the animal. But I have to say, raising up chameleon babies is one of my greatest joys in life.

    • @ChameleonAcademy
      @ChameleonAcademy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pedro Sotomayor unless you need to hold him, I’d just leave him be. They will calm down a little as they become familiar with you. There will be a lot of effort put into taking him down which you can do if you want. Here is a podcast episode that talks about some things you can do to start that process. The important thing is patience and always taking feedback from your chameleon as to how he is doing with your activity. But take a listen here and see if there is anything that helps.

    • @ChameleonAcademy

      Chameleons change color to communicate. It actually has nothing to do with their background. This is one of those urban myths that keeps bouncing around!

    • @bighomes2286
      @bighomes2286 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChameleonAcademy I always thought they change by what they are touching. Like if they are climbing on a stick they turn green or try to match any leaves surrounding. So idk I see people just hand them things and they change colour how come they don’t do human skin? 🤷‍♂️

    • @ChameleonAcademy
      @ChameleonAcademy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bighomes2286 unfortunately, those videos you see of chameleons changing color to match what they touch are faked videos. That isn't what happens. You can just look at all my videos and you will see what chameleons truly do as far as color change.

    The best way to handle your chameleon............ DON'T!!!

  • @turbofart101
    @turbofart101 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Should't you not touch them Because it shortens their life?

    • @ChameleonAcademy
      @ChameleonAcademy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alex Vause handling in itself does not shorten their lives. Handling is a short term stress which they can deal with just fine as long as we don’t handle them enough to be causing a longer term stress. A stress spike every week isn’t going to harm the chameleon. Taking them out every day may be enough to cause issues. It is also in how the handling is done which is what this video attempted to address.
