Glad you highlighted how good the story telling of Shovel Knight's final battle is. Shield Knight up until that point was a typical damsel in distress; a prop for Shovel Knight to angst over. Her being the Enchantress didn't change that since she wasn't in control anyway.
Then the final battle starts and you're wondering how to fight the true form of the locket and she jumps up in the air shield up and it *clicks*. Shield Knight and Shovel Knight are a *team*, and you win the battle by working together. What makes this different from something like Zelda firing Light Arrows at Ganon is that you directly interact with what the AI character is doing and it feels organic. She jumps, you bounce to a higher location ; she raises her shield during an undodgeable attack, you get behind her. You get a sense of their style of teamwork because you have to actually play it out.
Kudos to Yacht Club.

Shovel Knight gives a classical story with a few special exceptions,Plague Knight gives a story that is very refined from the original yet still maintaining awesomness,and Specter Knight literally sends the story upside-down and reveals shocking truths.
I disagree completely. Never a damsel in distress. she was shown from the VERY START thru flashbacks, to be an EQUAL and PARTNER, also showing what a loose end shovel knight was without her.

I like Plague Knight’s the best because of how op he is. He has the best mobility and attack power / attack options. Maybe others don’t like feeling overpowered, but I feel like it’s balanced out by Plague Knight’s higher learning curve, which make you feel weak at first and godlike by the end.
zentazym1 I prefer the other campaigns because I sort of limped all the way through plague knight. The other campaigns really clicked with me and I still have fun going back and speed running those two, and challenging myself by not using items on new game + and stuff like that. Plague knight hasn’t had me coming back because I always get frustrated with the confusing way he jumps and attacks.
Quinn Fredine There’s a high learning curve. It’s odd because after getting used to it, the other characters feel limited and slow in comparison. It definitely took most of the game to feel like I’d mastered Plague Knight so I get why so many people disliked his campaign.
i think its the lack of a safety net
I think that his combat potential is lacking, especially for enemies that move around a lot, but his movement options are definitely satisfying

Oh wow I had no idea it was supposed to come out so soon! There was almost 2 years between plague knight and specter knight so I thought there would be more time before king knight. Oh well, I'll just make another video when the time comes.
I think it came out at the right time becuase the "game just released" bias would have put king knight above shovel for sure although we can't compare them critically until quite a bit after its release. Think "This is definitely game of the year 2018!!!" *Forgets about the game entirely by Summer time*

I personally love plague knights campaign the most for gameplay and story reasons. Mind you all the campaigns are God like but I just like the complexity of the bomb mechanic, or to put is simply, I love blowing things up. And the story while not complex like specter torment, is still the best in my eyes. Probably because it's cute, Mona, Plague Knight and literally all the characters from it are cute.

Plague's was my favourite campaign, because even if it had the same stages, the story was different and the controls made it so much more exciting. The fact that i could partially fly was enough for me to love it. Plus Plague Knight is my spirit animal.

It's just like how the integration of mobility options in newer mario games (*cough* cough* Odyssey) made it a better game altogether, or at least that's how I see it.
Sebastián Ramirez Imo the mobility options in plague knight are largely what’s holding it back, it’s too complicated and doesn’t feel as natural as the other two characters. Mario odyssey integrated its new mechanics in a way that still felt natural and not over complicated, I feel like odyssey’s transition from other Mario games is more comparable to how specter knight transitioned from shovel knight. But I think a more notable comparison for specter knight would be megaman x.

For me the customization and fighting of PoS was my favorite, the use of items/relics were my favorite from SoH, but the parkour from SoT was amazing and made me feel like a ninja
Personally I love all of the campaigns. There is no winner between any of them, really. The only thing that really matters is which one you like the most.
The first shovel knight campaign, with the burly blue guy himself, is pretty much a classic in multiple senses of the word. There's a reason why even before the DLC it was the most acclaimed indie game when it came out.
But then what fun is it to stick with classic stuff? I also loved Plague Knight's unique take on the same campaign that Shovel Knight took, and even the small changes and deviations it makes from his story at times. Simply Brilliant. And the things it added at the end, also quite marvelous.
Specter Knight's campaign is the most unique though, offering a completely different gameplay style and a story to go with it. For better or for worse. I liked how the atmosphere was darker and the task more dire, as were the levels too. It was actually the most challenging of all the campaigns. And it was also a bit emotionally taxing too, because it's hard not to sympathize with the characters that were unfortunate enough to be forced to do the enchantress's bidding, and all the twists and turns it takes.
If I had to pick a favorite of all the campaigns, well... I REALLY like Plague Knight. But then I also like Specter Knight for how cool he is. So it's kind of a tie between them currently.

Late to this but thought I'd give my insight.
Story:
1st: Plague of Shadows (is adorable and gives a lot of character to everyone, even minor characters)
2nd: Specter of Torment (amazing backstory, most layered plot)
3rd: Shovel of Hope (just your good ol' knight story with a few twists to turn things around)
Music:
Shovel of Hope (the original, groundbreaking soundtrack)
Specter of Torment (fantastic remixes all around)
Plague of Shadows (only a few new songs, albeit fantastic ones)
Gameplay:
Specter of Torment (fast-paced, felt amazing to control, items are fun to use)
Shovel of Hope (items weren't great but were fun enough, otherwise great in all areas)
Plague of Shadows (bomb jumping was really fun, but felt awkward at times and spent a lot of time shifting through bombs in menus)

Story:
1: Specter of Torment; I felt heartbroken by the end of SoT. Specter Knight somehow became my favorite character in the SK world, and I would love to see a sequel specifically to SoT where Specter Knight goes to find the locket. The only thing that bothers me is how Specter Knight's dialogue in SoH seems inconsistent with his character, probably because they didn't plan his story all the way back. Wondering why they don't patch that or something.
I just realized I wrote a lot more than I expected, lol.
2. Plague of Shadows; you summed it up very well, it's a cute love story.
3. Shovel of Hope; the story didn't click with me as much as it seemed to have had with others. I agree with everything you said, just want to point out one thing I found really cool:
In the dream sequences, you can either catch Shield Knight or not. I love how this works in two ways--Shovel Knight getting his love back, only to wake up to the sad reality OR Shovel Knight not being able to reach his loved one, signifying the impossible task and his fear of failure.
Probably reading way too much into this, this bit just personally struck me as really neat.

2. Specter of Torment; I love the more quiet music. It serves both the darker tone of the story, and gives the levels a silent atmosphere that suits the game as a prequel (it feels like the calm the storm).

3. Plague of Shadows (I enjoyed this one MUCH more in the second playthrough)

Alon Or I was heartbroken by specter knight's story as well when he talked about how he cared so much for shovel and shield knight but I cared for Donovan and reize so much and the ending where specter knight sacrificed himself was I don't even know it was just such a good ending and twist

I love how in plague of shawdows you can string together four jumps in a matter of seconds and completely soar through the more open levels.
tldr; So yes. Yacht Club Games fully deserves to use that really stuck-up looking yacht as their logo. THEY ARE THAT GOOD.

Listening to you talk about Specter Knight's OST so much, it reminds me of how amazing LA-MULANA is once again. The lead dev just finished most of the compositions for the sequel this thursday, and they've brought a new music specialist to the team that should make the temple's tunes terrifically tap-tastic.

With the sequel right around the corner, now is the best time! *Disclaimer* LA-MULANA is a pot of gold buried 5 feet under concrete. It is around the same size as Hollow Knight, but since it is riddle-centric, rather than combat-centric, a lot of people don't get to see how amazing it is.

I also enjoyed Specter of Torment the most of the three. SoT reminded me a lot of the Mega Man Zero games gameplay wise - which is one of my all-time favorite series. Fast-paced, rewards mastery, good balance of difficulty with options for easier play... They certainly are different beasts, but I'd definitely recommend the MMZ games based on your enjoyment of SoT if you haven't played them.

When King of Cards comes out, I really hope they decide to make a boss rush mode or a mode you could replay boss fights with any character. So many fun patterns to learn!!
I enjoyed the music for Specter of Torment, but boiiis Plague of Shadows was so fun to dip through. And Plague Knight seems like the most human of them all, being a nerdy lil guy who just wants the chance with the girl of his dreams. Relatable much, quircky fun.
Specter of Torment was my favorite campaign. In fact, I have the same list as yours (Specter > Shovel > Plague).
For the soundtracks, my favorite songs were the Clockwork Tower (Original) and the Lost City (Specter of Torment remix).
Personally, after the learning curve, Plague of Shadows is so satisfying and contains endless amounts of fun. And my favorite shovel knight song was from that campaign, the “waltz for one”, although admittedly it didn’t have enough music. And the story, to me, was the best out of them all, it was interesting and very relatable

Can you make a new video comparing King of Cards to the other campaigns? In my opinion, King of Cards is my favorite game in both Story and gameplay. I just loved the new gameplay mechanics and how King Knight interacted with everything.
I'd love to see this rankinging remade with King of Cards included. Specter Knight is my personal favorite but I actually think King Knights gameplay felt even more fluid to me and I had a blast.

Plague Knight is only slow if you suck. If you learn to play him he's way faster than the other knights.

About the betrayal of Luan, it’s heavily implied the amulet was corrupting his mind
Just an idea for plague knights out there, If you use boomerang case with quick fuse and your favorite powder, you get ninja stars! If you also use orbit caseing with remote fuse and your 2nd favorite powder you get a Orbit Shield!!! You can use the OS with any other bomb type exept for the remote fuse and the OS powder, also orbit caseing (duh). Hope this helped Plague Knights!

I started playing the HECK outta this game recently, and I honestly love Plague of Shadows as much as I love Specter of Torment. Shovel of Hope is amazing, don't get me Wrong, but I think the other campaigns are slightly better. Great video, and hopefully you make a video for King Knight.
In shovel of hope I actually found a lot of use for sub weapons. For example, using the chaos orb to take out bosses, using the propeller dagger for mobility, or using the alchemy coin to reap more reward. I hardly ever used the phase locket, though that may be due to my more offensive mind set. Gotta agree with you on specter of torment being the best, though I like plague of shadows more than shovel of hope. Bomb jumping is a lot of fun, never gets old, and I really like Specter knight's mobility.
So, are you updating this video, with the 4th campaign XD
I think Plague of Shadows had my favorite platforming. Chain-bombing to fly through the air at ludicrous speed was so satisfying.
My own personal high: Beating the Fleet Flask bonus stage and challenge levels without using the Fleet flask because I didn't understand how it worked.
I would love it if they made another series of shovel knight games, maybe one for each of the bosses would be a cool idea ^w^ Although I do love Specter knight the most of the three stories as well tbh ^W^ I just finished plague of shadows and man, this game series is surprisingly amazing!

Great video! I think differently about phase though. If you're relying on it and it's making things to easy, I'd argue just not use it. It IS op, 100%, but think it's a "get gud" situation (and I completely abused it on a few sections lol)
I think that personally the gameplay ranks like this, looking at it objectively as I can. shovel of hope: the most well rounded and easy to master, it's enjoyable and intuitive but by no means a cakewalk making it satisfyingly difficult but not annoyingly so. Plague of shadows: easily the hardest to master and with high skill ceiling and the most rewarding with mastery of the controls, however being slightly un-intuitive makes it slightly hard to grasp at the very very begining. Spectre of torment, the most fluid and gratifying movement and is easy to pick up, difficult to master but rewarding with mastery.

Neat. I personally found Specter of Torment too easy, but it was really fun slashing and wall jumping around.
It would be awesome for a prequal to shovel of hope being shield knight dlc which tells us of the game and more about the good knights and what evil knights prior form
I love the symbolism behind Shovel Knight. Shovel Of Hope is an adventure story, shows what kind of "hero" character Shovel Knight is. Plague Of Shadows (being my personal favourite) is a comedic love story, showing that Plague Knight is actually a decent guy who just wants to be loved. Specter Of Torment is melancholic and depressing, telling the sad backstory of Specter Knight. King Of Cards is a tale of betrayal, telling us how King Knight sacrificed all for nothing.
Each campaign is different, and theres something for every type of person. Hats of to Yacht Club for making this ingenius masterpiece.

Plague Knight is the most fun for me, simply because I can play the game in many different ways using different types of items and bombs. Some like to wall bounce, some uses vats extensively etc. etc. He's hard to master but OP as hell and very satisfying to play.
Dude I would really like a tinker knight campaign it would be interesting to see how they would do that
Tbh, Specter Knight’s items feels like it has the best power distribution, but at the same time there are some clear outliers, such as full screen dash thing that skips entire platforming sections, the claw item tearing a lot of minibosses a new one and downright invalidating knights as a challenge factor and the always-at-hand healing skull.

I could have sworn the feather gave you a brief period of invincibility while you floated. I could be wrong. Also, I love using the Judgement Rush. The Mini-Scythes can be quite useful as well.

King Knight's might be my favourite.
Its ending is sad but not tear jerking, it was more like a tragedy from a Shakespeare play.

Plague knight has a totally customizable playstyle and a beautiful story, shovel knight has fun classic gameplay and the best soundtrack ever, while spextar knight's gameolay makes you feel like a freaking god of parkour while remaining really challenging, and although the story and soundtrack could be better, the gameplay is just perfect. I played specter of torment first, (I didn't find out about shovel knight til late 2017) and absolutely loved it. The new game + mode is pretty hard too.
I bought Shovel Knight Treasure Trove just to play Specter Knight's campaign. Something about just seeing gameplay in passing in other videos, it seemed really enjoyable. Plus, Specter Knight looks really cool and edgy. After playing through Shovel Knight, I was really excited to start Specter Knight. So far, I have not been disappointed.
I enjoyed the specter knight story the most, mostly because of all the references and Easter eggs to the original shovel knight. Also, I like how they took a very minor character and made him a main character. (Reize)

I always thought Reize’s name was pronounced like “rise” because it would make more sense of the time he said “when evils afoot, Reize is on the rise” in specter of torment
If you wanna have a real challenge, play through specter of torment with the auto grind(when you hit the ground) super speed cheat. It is so fun, but so difficult. Useful tip, use the mirror curios a bunch. If you use it right before hitting the ground. You won't start grinding. And with the mirror, you only use darkness when you attack with it active.

Plague of Shadows is my favorite. I love the amount of mobility he has and how none of it is based on level setpieces. Plague's controls take a lot to master, but they're a lot of fun and super frantic.
I think that the only thing that lacks in the specter of torment campaign is the boss rush, it could be amazing have the boss of tinker knight running arround the tower
Hmm. I only ever used the invisibility items when I absolutely needed to. My most used items were the Sky Dagger and Chaos Orb.

My favorite gameplay from the 3 is plague knight’s, because I enjoy the movement the most (and also bombing the shit out of enemies). Fav story is easily shovel knight’s, I only had a single problem from all 3 stories and that was Donovan’s random betrayal of Luan. Fav soundtrack is also shovel knight’s, mainly cause the music from it was way more memorable than the other two campaign’s. Random throw in, my favorite knight is Propeller Knight. I reaaaally wish he would’ve gotten his own campaign.

I always wanted to know more about polar knight. Not sure exactly what his gameplay would be like but his backstory seems like it could be really interesting since we know he has some history with shovel knight.

My personal favorite is Specter of Torment because of the fun scythe attacks and the fun gameplay
Specter of torment doesn't have a bossrush where you kick the ass of 8 opponents in a row with grace and style.
What were they thinking? Specter Knight's gameplay makes bossfights both easier and more fun than other campains!
Props for the NG+ though: it's like a speedrun mode and it's rad all the way through, where the other 2 NG+ just felt like kicks to the balls (especially the bossrushs).
Plague Knight is my favorite campaign because I tend to prefer magic/alchemy if I get to do attacks in gaming and ranged attacks are always extremely fun to me.
Specter of torment is my favorite game of all time. Its sooooooo good.

Specter of Torment for me. It's more story based and flying around with the dash attack is so fun.
Re: Shovel of Hope's story: Seeing that Shield Knight survived as she hobbles over to Shovel Knight's camp to fall asleep beside him chokes me up every time. Seeing that ending for the first time made me so fucking happy.
Not gonna lie, I cried a little too.
King of Cards kinda tops all the other campaigns imho. Super fun and clever game designs, using new and old level themes to great yet unique effect, fantastic new songs, and a hilarious yet effective story that has made King Knight change from a sorta likeable funny character to an absolute riot who I'm rooting for the whole way.
Question, have you beat the final boss though?
