I do have to take a bit of an exception for the Xenoblade 1 song the quiz maker picked, as this was meant to be a battle theme quiz and that song is a CUTSCENE theme, NOT a battle theme. Sure, it bleeds over into the battles immediately following the cutscenes it plays in, but it doesn't loop AND when it finishes, the normal boss battle theme, An Obstacle in Our Path, starts up instead.
@philippeleprohon4823 specifically any RPG made in Japan. They tend to have certain tropes such as extremely long cutscenes, long drawn out story lines, and anime esk protagonists but none of those are technically required.
Everlasting Battle from Tales of the Abyss is an eeeeeeevil pick for this kind of quiz because it's actually a medley from previous battle themes in the series! It plays during the token cameo battle with characters from older games - still the best one of the entire franchise, imo. They could have made it even more evil by picking the excerpt further into the song lmao
So with Yakuza: Like a Dragon/Like a Dragon 7 (and then maintained in Infinite Wealth/Like a Dragon 8), they legit just made it a JRPG. The schtick being that the new main character of the series grew up as a MASSIVE geek who adored Dragon Quest and literally just thinks of life in Dragon Quest terms, so all of the "Magic" is things like someone taking a swig of alcohol then blowing on a lighter to "use a fire spell" It's honestly impressive how well that game genre transition worked
Wasnt it originally also an april fools joke but the fans surprisingly vibed with the idea so hard that they just went ahead and actually made it a game?
@@zecendia So I'd heard that but never really looked into it until now, it looks like that was a joke taken out of context, the April Fool's trailer came out less than a year before the full release, so for that to be the case they would have had to do a full pivot/rework in that timeframe
Another thing I saw is that someone said it has been a JRPG since the title "like a Dragon" which is false. The game has always been called Like a Dragon. It's just localizers like the always insert they own naming scheme in certain things. Also the fact they will actually continue with this name from here on out in the west for all games related. An easy way to differentiate Xenoblade music if you feel like it's one of them but you're not sure. You just have to identify what the main instrument is. It's easiest in the battle themes, but each game is uniquely forward with a different instrument most notable in the battle themes but still shows up throughout. The first one is definitely guitar and piano forward (and also I believe it's the only digital symphony compared to live recording but dont quote me on that) The second is very jazzy with the saxophone And the third one straight up has it built into the plot and is very forward with the flute
I wasn't counting how many I got, I just want to say, I'm disappointed that there wasn't any octopath music in there Yasunori Nishiki's music is so damn good
I have literally been replaying PLA for the last week, and I almost missed it on the quiz if it wasn't for you mentioning it sounds like Pokemon. God, my brain is cooked from the internet. XD
0:18 The Mario RPGs don’t count as JRPGs? 15/30. Figures this would be a quiz that I’d do poorly on though. JRPG is such a wide net to cast, more than Nintendo I’d wager. So many series I haven’t even glanced at.
Even if my main games are JRPGs, I don't actually play too many series so I couldn't have guessed half of these XD, but I could guess some "vibes" like "this is a final fantasy song" without being able to tell you which one. If it was Tales of, Trails, Pokemon or Xenoblade though I locked that in (Ys too if there had been any) and it was so nice to hear some Last Story thrown in. That game is goated and would SO deserve a remastered release!
Starting off with Trails in the Sky was not something I expected, was expecting Chrono Trigger. Also, FamilyJules is the man! Shining Resonance sounded like an Atelier song.
Mildly disappointed there was no selection from Bravely Default, but the inclusion of Skies of Arcadia and Legend of Mana definitely pleased me. (I'd love to get your reactions to/drum covers of more from those two OSTs, Jared, as well as tracks from BD.) Most of the ones I missed, I'd never played, but I was ashamed to get Chrono Trigger wrong, because I HAVE played that quite a bit, even if it was many years ago.
Don't feel bad, I've played 11 games on this list but could still only recognize 4 tracks. Legend of Mana (and the Mana series generally) has some AMAZING boss musics.
You did better than me, and I grew up playing a lot of older jrpgs -- I got 3. And felt bad not getting the Legend of Mana one having replayed that (with the remaster) earlier this year even. (It also reminded me I really need to replay Xenogears at some point, and that I wish they could remaster it a la SaGa Frontier, with actually adding content to flush out abandoned original ideas)
I wanna be mad at the people in chat questioning if like a dragon is a jrpg but I just cant because I get it. Its very out of left field, you need to play the game to understand why its a jrpg
It definitely was made by quite literally the best of the best in their respective fields. Toriyama, Sakaguchi and Uematsu was an insane group of individuals to head up a jrpg
I got 9. I need to play more JRPGs man! The one that stung me the most was the Persona 2 one because I completed Persona 2 Innocent Sin on the PS1. The song was probably from Eternal Punishment.
I played Bersaria to completion...I couldn't remember hearing that song on the list though! lol Other than that, I either got it instantly or I had no idea what it was from
I’m pretty sure he’s said on cast that he does not like Kingdom Hearts (or its music which is wild considering how much he likes Shimomura’s other works) which is why he tends not to play music from the series even if it’s requested, so that much at least makes sense. His first console was GCN IIRC, so I guess Trigger DS and Cross for Switch didn’t catch his eye.
Motoi Sakuraba my absolute GOAT. Did music for Tales of, Golden Sun, Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile, Baten Kaitos, the frickin' Mario Sports games, all of Dark Souls 1 (with some tracks in 2 and 3), and even arranged some tracks for Smash Bros.! Definitely my favorite composer of all time, with Yoko Shimomura (Kingdom Hearts, Legend of Mana, Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga) and Michiru Yamane (Castlevania, Bloodstained) as close seconds! Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy and most other Squenix games) is a good composer, don't get me wrong, but those three are on a whole different level. You'll notice most of these songs are prog rock, probably my favorite genre. For the uninitiated, progressive, or prog, rock combines elements of both classical music (like note progression, chords, time signatures, and instrumentation) and modern rock music (such as instruments again, rhythm, style, and willingness to play with the "norm"), and you often end up with multiple time signatures, layered instrumentation, and an overall satisfyingly complex melody that takes you on a journey you likely won't expect. Sakuraba-sensei used to be in a prog rock band, Crushed Ice (later renamed Deja Vu), which is why most of the music he composes is proggy in nature, with the possible exception of most of Dark Souls and some of his more relaxed tracks in other games. Side note: several of these games are only technically JRPGs by virtue of being made by Japanese game companies. A JRPG is a game with turn-based combat like FF1, FFX, Golden Sun, Pokemon, Dragon Quest, etc. Kingdom Hearts, Tales of Symphonia, Star Ocean: Til the End of Time, and other games where you control the character are classified as "action RPGs" or "ARPGs" because you're doing a lot more action than not. Possibly hot take, but I say the Final Fantasy games with real-time combat like VI, VII, VIII, and IX are closer to ARPGs than JRPGs. If you're reading this, go play Golden Sun, or at least listen to the OST, you won't regret either, I promise. If nothing else, listen to Venus Lighthouse and Elemental Stars. OTZ
I'm kind of losing my mind that not only did they take a track that was originally from Diamond/Pearl and say it was from Legends Arceus (imagine if they played Dancing Mad and said it was from FFXIV), but LEGENDS ARCEUS ISN"T AN RPG! Saying this as someone who loves the game, it's closer to a cross between pokemon snap and an open world collect-a-thon like DK 64. If legends arceus is an RPG then you can argue that half of all games ever made are rpgs.
Nice choices for the soundtrack, though I only recognized 9/30. At best 9.5, because there was one where I recognized the game immediately, but not the specific theme. And there was another one where I did not recognize the theme despite having played the game it came from. It DID sound super familiar to me, I just couldn't make out from where.
i play Jrpgs for the music if not for story and gameplay... Falcom music are bangers. both the Trails and the Ys series by Koshiro Yuzo and Sound Team JDK.
I did even worse. I got 5.5. I knew all of the Xenoblades, Persona 5, and Chrono Trigger. I also knew the Legends Arceus song was Arceus' theme because of the original song from Gen 4, but I had no idea what game it was from. I also knew the Persona 2 song was from an Atlus game, but I had no idea which one, so I guessed SMT 5 because I've not played that series
That wasn’t Arceus’s theme. That’s the generic Legendary Pokémon theme from Gen IV and was used for the first phase of Giratina’s fight in Legends Arceus.
First question is already wrong. That is not from trails in the sky. It is from a different trails game. Edit: my mistake it is from second chapter i was mistaking it for a cold steel theme. In my defense there are 12 trails games easy to get mistaken.
Despite calling myself an RPG fan as my main genre of games I enjoy, I only got a 4/30. I haven't actually played too many in terms of variety due to not having money to spend on new games on a whim, and also I'm a Nintendo (and PC since 2011) boy so any RPGs from the PS2/XBox era and above are beyond me. There were even some RPGs here I have played that I didn't catch due to how long it's been since I played (Tales of the Abyss and Xeno3). But I was fully 100% confident that if FFIX, ToS, or SMRPG showed up, I'd get it easily. And for ToS, I did, instantly. Too bad it was super easy because Fatalize is the most popular track in the entire game by a landslide. Xeno2, Chrono Trigger, Tales of Symphonia, and Legend of Mana were the only ones I got.
Calling classic orchestral music as dissonant is extremely strange. Also what is wrong with the chat? Why do some of them think Legends Arceus is not a JRPG? It's still a typical turn-based JRPG. Did being a Pokemon game with a more open world break their minds or something? LUL
I think a lot of people just don't really view pokemon games as jrpgs. Like, I know that even if it is, by definition, a JRPG, I don't really view it as such. I've always categorized it as like, a monster battler, whereas for JRPG I tend to imagine something like FF or the like. It comes down to the whole, how do you define JRPG question that will never have a concrete answer.
My score: 5.2. I Got: Chrono Cross Final Fantasy X Tales of (the abyss). I only knew it was from a Tales of game, so 0.1 points. Chrono Trigger (if you don't get that one, you can definitely say you never touched a JRPG) Tales of (symphonia). Another 0.1. Final Fantasy 8 Legend of Mana ...Yeah, I'm old...
This quiz is kinda disappointing with using the same series over and over when you have banger underloved songs from games like Ys and Prices Maker 2. Seriously amazing music go check them out now. PM2 battle theme will blow you away, specifically the fm towns one.
Oh man, you've never played Chrono Trigger or Chrono Cross? Chrono Trigger is one of the best RPGs of all time, and Chrono Cross is criminally Under rated (it gets trashed because it'd a 'bad' sequel to Chrono Trigger, which I won't argue, but taken on it's own merits without considering it as a sequel, it's great IMO and the it has prolly the best VG OST of all time). Highly recommend.
I love that you’re doing these too. They’re so fun.

You and I both pal
"I don't play JRPG's"
I DO!!! 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Got 14, pretty happy about it
This is one of the easiest quizzes for me~~~
Calling classic orchestral music as dissonant is extremely strange.
🔥🔥🔥
People don't call SMRPG a Final Fantasy game with a Mario skin for nothing. I think any of the Mario RPGs would have been fair game.
This shit has such a bias for Trails/Tales and FF
1 dragon quest??? No Atelier???
Like, DQ is THE jrpg franchise 😅
Played along, heres what i got: XC2, P5, Chrono Trigger, X1, Nier, X3.
I've played so many JRPGs im disappointed with myself 😭
13/30 and I don't know how could have missed Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and 3....
Glad to see baten kaitos here, bot the best one of that game but its good to see it gets representation
17/30. actually kinda disappointed because i play a LOT of RPGs
My score: 5.2. I Got:
Chrono Cross
Final Fantasy X
Tales of (the abyss). I only knew it was from a Tales of game, so 0.1 points.
Chrono Trigger (if you don't get that one, you can definitely say you never touched a JRPG)
Tales of (symphonia). Another 0.1.
Final Fantasy 8
Legend of Mana
...Yeah, I'm old...
Only 2/30, but I did recognize both of those instantly.
I've played tales of the abyss twice and didn't remember that track at all
It's from the optional cameo boss fights in the arena
Ashamed you missed FFX :P
...huh?!
9:45
Maybe because it is? 😁
2/30, I don’t play FF, I thought the Legends Arceus song was from Black and White, and I missed Persona 2 entirely :( but I did get Kingdom Hearts 2.
This quiz is kinda disappointing with using the same series over and over when you have banger underloved songs from games like Ys and Prices Maker 2. Seriously amazing music go check them out now. PM2 battle theme will blow you away, specifically the fm towns one.
7 😂😂😂😂😂😂 some this I know but couldn't remember jrpg gamer
4/30 damm im bad 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hey, we're tied cause I got 4/30 correct as well. 👏
俺の思い出のゲームBGM!
同じく好きな人がいる事が嬉しい
ありがとう!
If anyone wants to know if Chrono Trigger is "that good," yes it is.
i love chronotrigger you need to play it
Is it bad that I know like all of these?
11/30. - 1 if you want to count half points against me (technically got 3 1/2s but rounded down)
Oh man, you've never played Chrono Trigger or Chrono Cross? Chrono Trigger is one of the best RPGs of all time, and Chrono Cross is criminally Under rated (it gets trashed because it'd a 'bad' sequel to Chrono Trigger, which I won't argue, but taken on it's own merits without considering it as a sequel, it's great IMO and the it has prolly the best VG OST of all time). Highly recommend.
ヤバい…💦日本人だけど1/3くらいしか当てられなかった…。
i instanly called blue dragon
4/30 cause I dont play many RPG's. I was surprised no Fire Emblem, or Octopath music 🤔
7.5 out of 30
0.5 because I confused Legends Arceus with Diamond/Pearl/Platinum!
No xenosaga, Digimon, breath of fire or legend of legaia... Oof.
Xenogears, eh close enough
I play so many rpgs and only got 2 im so stupid
