  • Training Tip Tuesday! Teaching to ground tie with front hobbles.
When horses come to me at Reata Horsemanship for training, especially those just getting started, part of the fundamental ground work I teach them is yielding to rope pressure on the legs, and hobbling.
Front hobble training comes after teaching to yield to rope pressure on all four feet.
Today, I started front hobble training with Governor, a 3-year-old quarter horse in training who presents with the challenge of not wanting to stand still during saddling.
After attempting other techniques to help him stand still, I resorted to teaching yielding to rope pressure followed by ground tying with front hobbles.
Tomorrow I’ll start saddling again, and I expect him to be much more relaxed and to keep his feet still.
