Yesterday, I stumbled upon Alice Smith thanks to her stunning appearance with Doyle Bramhall II at Crossroads. I have been listening to various songs, including several versions of this song, and she moves me to tears each time.

She's actually said that she recorded the studio version of it very soon after her grandmother died, and that whenever she sings it now she feels her grandmother's presence. She spent a lot of time with her grandmother in Georgia when she was a child. The way she sings most things sounds to me like she's thinking of everything that ever happened to everyone.

Yes. You're all the way right. Covers are very much a thing, and an interesting thing. Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday did a lot of covers. Leontyne Price, Jessye Norman, Kathleen Battle and Marian Anderson did a a lot of covers and I think Kathleen might still be at it. Enrico Caruso, Luciano Pavarotti and Maria Callas did a lot of covers . . . there's a whole lotta covers goin' on.
