The legacy of the murder of James Byrd Jr - BBC News

  • On a Saturday night in a small Texas town, three white men offered James Byrd Jr a ride home. The next morning, a little boy found Byrd's body. He'd been beaten, chained to the back of a truck and dragged alive until he was decapitated - all because he was black.
The BBC went to Jasper, Texas to see how the brutal murder in 1998 changed the Byrd family - and the town.

I'm 31 and I only know about this because it was part of the end credits of the 2021 Candyman sequel where it portrayed different black men being lynched essentially including 14-year-old who was sent to the electric chair for a crime that he didn't commit. And just on a personal note I am so glad that they mentioned George Floyd at the end of this because despite President Obama's legislation cruelties like this are still happening and will continue to happen as long as white people don't get their heads out of the sand and I'm a white person mind you.

If you'd never heard about James Byrd Jr. but had heard about Matthew Shepard (their murders were 4 months apart) then the so-called liberal media may not be as liberal as is portrayed. The media hypes up and sensationalizes news on a very selective basis. It is why you almost never hear about young Black women who go missing while Gabby Petito gets covered non-stop.

The American system of punishment isn't punishment at all. Three meals a day, a bed to sleep in, friends, drugs and violence. You are remembered James Byrd Jr....
"The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009, 18 U.S.C. § 249
The Shepard Byrd Act is the first statute allowing federal criminal prosecution of hate crimes motivated by the victim’s actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. The Act makes it a federal crime to willfully cause bodily injury, or attempt to do so using a dangerous weapon, because of the victim’s actual or perceived race, color, religion, or national origin. The Act also covers crimes committed because of the actual or perceived religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, or disability of any person, if the crime affected interstate or foreign commerce or occurred within federal special maritime or territorial jurisdiction."
