1. Recognizing Joe Pesci from Home Alone made me realize Mary's never seen Goodfellas. Hopefully it's on the list to watch, it's one of the greatest movies ever
2. I'm not one to ever really comment on the appearance of actors, but....change my view: Marisa Tomei is one of the most graceful beautiful creatures to ever float over the earth's surface

Another vote for A Few Good Men
The actor that played the judge, Fred Gwynne, was best known for his role as Herman Munster in the 1960s TV sitcom "The Munsters". His character looked a bit like Frankenstein's monster on that show. His part in this film was his final one before his death.
Yeah, he seemed to be semi-typecast after The Munsters, and only nabbed small roles. Like one brief scene in Fatal Attraction.
Prior to The Munsters, he was in the comedy TV show "Car 54, Where Are You?"

13:24 I'm surprised you dont know about it. They're not using a regular keyboard. It's a stenography machine. They can press multiple keys at the same time in different combinations so they basically type in syllables sort of like playing chords on a piano, and they also use a form of writing called shorthand. So they're not spelling all the words fully, then after the session they translate it into regular english.
So basically a word that might take a regular typist 9 keystrokes might only take them 3. Theyre definitely skilled professionals.
I would hate to see the stenographer's shorthand for the public defender. Vinnie's opening statement was limited to "Thank You".
Yeah... I get that she's not a trial lawyer, but I was also surprised that she didn't seem to know about disclosure.
@@ariochiv She’s in Europe. I don’t know the laws there, but maybe they’re not the same for disclosure. Also, she’s in the legal profession but not a trial lawyer.

Yeah. This is one of those performances that destroyed an actor's career because they were too good. Marissa got the Oscar for this, but, it became almost impossible for her to be cast in any significant future roles. She's gotten some work, but mostly 30 years later after people had forgotten about My Cousin Vinny. A performance that good should have made her a headline star doing lead roles in major productions every year, but it did the opposite.
Same thing happened to Ted Levine after Silence Of The Lambs. Nobody could cast Buffalo Bill as a different character. Everybody would still see Buffalo Bill. Same reason Jack Gleeson won't be doing anything for decades, until people forget about Joffry in Game Of Thrones. Same goes for Malfoy from Harry Potter.
It's too bad because that usually only happens to bad-guy characters. The only other example I can think of, happening to someone for a positive role, would be Alicia Silverstone. Her performance as Cher in Clueless was legendary. And it nuked her career.
Definitely watch A Few Good Men. It's very different from Vinny, obviously, but it's a very, very good and entertaining movie with some fantastic performances.
The Court Reporter is typing on a "Stenographic Machine" which records phonetic elements by pressing multiple keys at the same time instead of typing full words letter by letter. You can type incredibly fast on one, which is why they are used in courtroom transcripts and closed captioning. They actually come from a time before audio recording was reliable enough to record court proceedings and are a bit of a holdover from that time. However they are still in use.
That said, I have a friend who is a medical transcriptionist. She has her computer set up with key combinations to type whole phrases that are common to the medical profession. By using this comprehensive library of key combinations she can type upwards of 250 words per minute. Most people can't talk that fast. But for instance "the patient presents with" is a common phrase that she would probably have a 3-key key combination to type. Make sense?
I used to date a court reporter and you are correct. It’s basically typing the sounds being heard, instead of being grammatically correct. During meetings, she was able to type conversations between several people, provided everyone was speaking one at a time. Funny thing is she made well over $100k a year and huge monthly bonuses if they made transcripts for clients.
Just so you know, we (court stenographers) refer to it as "writing", not "typing". 👍🏼
was going to say it is like the typewriter version of shorthand............no one remembers Pitman's Shorthand these days..... very handy in lectures before you could take a voice recorder.....my age is really showing !

The "I shot the clerk" thing is why cultural language and meaning is so important for context especially in a legal setting. We know he was saying it as in "I can't believe you're telling me that" but all the cop heard was "I shot the clerk" and that's exactly how it was written and recited. Because it was out of that context.
Now you need to watch “The Karate Kid,” from 1984. Ralph Machio is in the too. You’ll absolutely LOVE it!!!!!
This movie, despite being a comedy, is the most accurate portrayal of US courtrooms you can find from tv or film, to the point that it's the only film I was ever assigned to watch for my law studies classes.
A great companion piece to watch with it is the TH-cam channel Legal Eagle's breakdown of just how accurate it is. Great video.

There's a very good Sidney Lumet film starring Paul Newman called the Verdict, it seems to me to have an excellent depiction of a trial and events surrounding and preparing for said trial. And it's just an all around fantastic drama.
"Getting stiffed" means someone owes you money, but didn't pay. In this case, she did she "tried to hustle for the money", which means playing billiards for cash stakes, and when it she won and it was time to pay, the guy she beat didn't pay her.
doesn't her use of the term "hustle" rather than bet or win mean hat she tricked the idiot into making a huge bet by pretending to be bad and then winning with her true skill?

A Few Good Men is a fantastic movie. The cast is amazing with Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson, Demi Moore, Kevin Bacon and Kiefer Sutherland. You should definitely check it out.
There were a few future A-list actors in the witnesses as well.

A Few Good Men is a horrible movie with one good scene...
There is definitely a way to keep up! My sister is a court reporter in NYC; I also took classes, though I never was able to take down more than 100 words/minute. My sister can take verbatim many times more than that.
Even before the machine, there was shorthand, and there's a fun little moment in the 1940s movie "The Maltese Falcon", where Humphrey Bogart's character is giving testimony while a gentleman calmly takes notes. There's a second where Bogart stops his quick speaking to ask the reporter if he's going to fast for him. "Oh, no," the reporter replies, gently. "I'm getting everything." "Good man," Bogart says.
Before shorthand, there was still note-taking in the courts, and it was recognized as extremely important. Though there was no way to take down exact words in, say, the fifteenth century, there would be a team of notaries who would get the gist of the questioning, and collate their notes at the end of the day, initialing the bottom of the pages to authorize the testimony.
There are law schools in the US that show this movie in their classes, to teach law students what to do and what NOT to do in court. Great film!

This movie is actually more accurate than a lot of holly wood depictions of court, but that has more to do w how inaccurate other depictions are.
@@bryansmith1691 lol I went to USD. I like how you are so dismissive. Perhaps every law school and teacher doesn’t teach the same and doesn’t use the same curriculum. Heck the Socratic method is barely even used anymore. Anyways… we used this and yes I took both Crim and Crim Procedure 1L year.
"The Verdict" is a great courtroom drama starring Paul Newman.
The Last Starfighter (1984) is a fun “family adventure” type movie about a boy and his video game. My personal favorite, this near perfect film will not disappoint! 👍

It's such an underrated hilarious film, especially the miscommunication jokes in a few of the scenes and the nervous defence lawyer always has me laughing.
Underrated? It won several awards. It was a critical and financial success. It holds an 87% on rotten tomatoes. How is that underrated?

@@mred20 Yeah, most people don't know about those things, but most people do think it's a pretty good movie. That's not underrated. Underrated would mean it's a better movie than most people give it credit for. Or even a movie that wasn't successful or appreciated at first, but became so over time. Blade Runner is a good example. Also, I know I'm nitpicking here. It's just a word.
"The Rainmaker" is an excellent law drama based on a John Grisham novel. It's considered to be close to how a real court case would be handled

Brilliant reaction. This is the second time I've watched it. I loved your shock and horror in the early parts when it's evident that Vinny doesn't realize what he's up against. You almost seems embarrassed that he's part of the same profession as you are. Then later seeing your relief and delight as he starts to use his unique skillset to unravel the prosecution's case. Always a joy to watch, thank you.
Another vote for "A Few Good Men". It's in my top 5 all time favorites.
Also, Alabama resident here. There are certainly still quite a few backwards areas and people around here, but you can find those pretty much anywhere, not just in this state. Hollywood likes to frequently use us as a lazy punchline though. In contrast with the portrayal in this movie, I grew up in Huntsville where the Saturn V Apollo moon rocket was designed and we now have one of the highest concentrations of engineers per capita in the country. Every place has its goods and bads and very rarely are they portrayed in all of their actual complexity on film.

i love how Mary's reaction to the Sheriff's understanding of what was said further proves one of the many points made in this movie, Witnesses suck! even Mary didn't know what she had already just seen.
A Few Good Men is a great movie. In a legal setting sense, it is very specific, because it deal with US Military Law, and the main characters are judge advocates in the Navy Office of the Judge Advocate General.
A Few Good Men and Top Gun combined became the basis of the show JAG, which spun off the NCIS shows.
Legally Blonde is a hilarious film with courtroom drama mixed in starring Reese Witherspoon. You would LOVE it!
There's another "legal" movie you might like from the early 70's called "The Paper Chase". It's about a law student attending his first year at Harvard Law School. A classic courtroom, murder mystery B&W film is "Witness for the Prosecution". Great film.
Also, a really fine Australian movie called "Breaker Morant". It involves the court martial of Australian soldiers for war crimes against the Boers during the Boer War in South Africa. It's a really excellent court room and human interest story about war atrocities, personal responsibility and how governments exploit men during wartime. Excellent.

"My Cousin Vinny": A "fishes out of water" tale where Outsiders discover Southern Culture and arrive at mutual respect. Not to mention, it's a Legal Drama that holds up to Law school scrutiny. It also nails the "keep quiet and let your lawyer do the talking" advice in no uncertain terms. If you want to see see a prison movie with a good message, I recommend 'Shawshank Redemption'. It's about a man serving two life sentences for the murder of his wife and her lover. This movie has meant a lot to me for reasons unrelated to being imprison.

@@Otokichi786 I'm a huge Jim Croce fan. His songs with just a guitar revealing his life and the people he met inspired me to be a better person. Also check out Robert Johnson. He was a blues singer in the 30s but was not recognized until after his death.
You would probably love the movie Philadelphia... with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington. And its about law too. Other great law movies... Anatomy of a Murder, Witness for the prosecution and the lincoln lawyer.
Other good movies you should watch : Rounders (about poker with matt damon), whiplash (great music, great acting, several oscars)... and if you want a lot of emotions, watch Life Is Beautiful. You gonna cry of happiness and sadness and laugh a lot. Another great movie basically nobody reacted to : The Wrestler.
Oh sweet innocent Mary who thinks that cops dont lie in court... ive seen a cop lie under oath at a trial for one of my friends... and of course, even if its 5 people under oath saying the opposite of the cop, the cop lie is worth more than anybody else.

To be honest, his performance is not enough to win an Oscar. If we compare the Oscar that Whoopi Goldberg won for Ghost and the work of the latter was superior in every way.
A much older trial-based movie you might like is "Witness for the Prosecution", based on a work by Agatha Christie, taking place in the UK, a few years after WWII. It stars Charles Laughton, Marlene Dietrich and Tyrone Power, with scene-stealing support from Elsa Lanchester.
A Few Good Men is a Must. Extremely powerful performances. But "The Judge" staring Robert Downey Jr and Robert Duvall is amazing as well.

The judge doesn’t get enough love, it is a wonderful movie with very good acting. Personally I’m not a fan of a few good men. Without Nicholson’s over the top performance, not a lot people would enjoy this do much.

This was Reiner's 1st misfire as a director.
He had six solid to great movies in a row from his first, Spinal Tap in 1984, next the very funny but not great

The hilarious "When HArry Met Sally" & the much better than expected "Misery".
Then came A Few Good Men.
From there it was all downhill.

A definite thumbs up for A Few Good Men. A good compliment for this one which is obviously a comedy, AFGM is a military drama (with a little humor sprinkled in here and there).
Good legal thing: Star Trek: the next generation - ‘measure of a man’ (season 2 episode 9). It’s about an A.i. Robot arguing the case for being a living being. Doubt many people here will know it so this comment won’t get a lot of upvotes, but it got 9.2 on IMDB so let that be the vote lol.

"A Few Good Men" is great! Written as a theater play originally by Aaron Sorkin. Was also shown in London with Rob Lowe as "Kaffee" in West End. That Tom Cruise plays in the movie.

I love this movie, one of the really great comedies period. Another one that's from this same time frame (but not legal comedy) is "Blast From The Past" with Brenden Fraiser. A hugely overlooked movie. Just wanted to make that a blip on your radar.

Court stenographers do keep up. 1st of all, they are extremely fast typists. 2nd.. they use a special shorthand which makes it easier. Though it is kind of dumb they don't allow recording devices in most courtrooms. That would make things a lot easier.
Stenographers, court reporters & transcriptionist use a specialized keyboard called a stenograph machine which has fewer keys than a conventional alphanumeric keyboard. This machine works by pressing multiple keys simultaneously (known as “chording” or “stroking”) to spell out whole syllables, words, and phrases with a single hand motion.
The Judge (2014) - Another really good courtroom drama that you will enjoy.
Joe Pesci’s a pretty versatile actor. He is best known for mobster roles in “Goodfellas” (he won an Oscar) and “Casino.” He was also great in “Raging Bull”
The jury probably won't be able to disregard what they heard, but the purpose of striking something from the record is more about what will be read from the record of the trial later when the trial is reviewed under appeal, or something like that, after the trial is finished.

FYI the bird outside the cabin is known as a screech owl. The scene demonstrates the reason for the name perfectly.

This is one of my favorite movies. And actually there is no villain or anyone intentionally being deceptive. Doesn't fit the movie "formula". The judge, the prosecutor and the sheriff are all acting within the law. The witnesses also are not purposely being deceptive...just mistaken identity. Great movie. Funny as hell. It's my understanding that this movie is shown to American law students because it's very accurate as far as court procedure.
Also....yes, you SHOULD indeed watch "A Few Good Men". Another of my favorites and also very accurate as far as military court proceedings go. It's not a comedy, but a drama. As in any good drama, there are comedic moments, but it's a legal, military drama. It stars Jack Nicholson, Tom Cruise, and Demi Moore.

For another stellar courtroom film, I highly recommend, The Rainmaker, starring Matt Damon and directed by Francis Ford Coppola.
For all its humor this film is often cited as one of the most accurate depictions of courtroom procedure ever put on film. Law schools have shown this film to law students to demonstrate many legal principles such as disclosure, jury selection, voir dire, witness interviews, cross examination, etc.
I work IT at a courthouse and asked the court reporter for a full demo while I fixed her PC. Modern court reporters "type" in syllables. They also have custom dictionaries on their machines for their style of shorthand. In the old days they wrote in shorthand by hand. It is super interesting and if you have a chance befriend a court reporter and watch them work.

I've spent some time in Alabama. It's a beautiful state and wonderful people. Speaking of, one of the interesting things about this movie, NOBODY in the movies is a "bad guy". At least no one you see. Probably the closest person to a "bad guy" is the victim (tried to stiff the boys out of half a slushie) and JT (the dufus who lost to Lisa at pool). Other than that everyone is just plain old good hearted. One of my favorite movies ever and this makes about my 50th watch. Lol
