Your videos on pen repair and servicing are simply the best on the Internet. Thank you very much. You are doing us pen lovers and collectors a huge favor and service. Can't thank you enough .... !
Hi, thanks a lot for your kindness and your valuable advices! You are right: for this pen the secret is to be patient and go gently! I was lucky: after soaking overnight and using a hairdryer, the my first conical nib with own ink feed was released. Now I will work to restore the pen calmly and I am sure of a good results. Thank you again and again. Ciao from Italy, Vincenzo.
I appreciate your video. I was given a Sheaffer Triumph for Christmas. It was a family heirloom. Your video was very informative and provided me great information on the proper filling of the pen as it is the first vac filler pen I have owned.
I own one triumph from the first series of the 40s, also brown striated. It is one of the smoothest nibs I have ever tried. Lovely pens indeed, and very unique in design.
I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to post these videos. They've helped me tremendously. I'm in the midst of a Sheaffer Triumph restoration as well as a few Parker Vacumatics! A new foray into restoration for me!
Thanks for the video! I've recently got a Sheaffer Jr that it seems to have a similar filling system. This should help putting it back in working order :). And don't worry about making the videos too long... I'd rather see all the details and spend 5 hours in front of the computer and make sure I get everything and not skip a step :)! Thanks again!
+Grandmia Pens Thanks for the reply. Well, I was able to disassemble most of the fountain pen but it looks like I am being defeated by the end plug. It just does not want to come off. Soaking and heating doesn't seems to do the trick. O.o ... I've put it aside for now until I get some kind of idea on what to do... I'm kind of lost at this point in time.
Hi..Im glad it is helpful.Unfortunately i have no 61s with a capillary filler, but i will look out for one and see what we can do...Thanks for viewing...
Hello Vincenzo...First try soaking in water overnight and use heat from a hairdryer and in some cases that it enough to realese the feed/nib section. If it does not work the first time try again ( patience is what normally works ). If you need to use ammonia then just a small drop in your water may help...Good luck. PS The secret is patients and go gently.
Thanks for a very clear and exhaustive description. I have a couple of Sheaffer pens that are vac-fillers like the one you show here. They are fine, but I am not sure about storage: they are used rarely - perhaps once or twice a year - and I am not sure if they should be stored empty or filled with distilled water. I live in Arizona, where the climate is always very dry. Your advice would be appreciated.
as always, a great informative step by step repair. I saw one in an antique store for 75 dollars (2019). I wanted to see what it would take for a repair, and this would be a bit too much for me. Ill take some ink to the store and make sure it works prior to purchasing it.
Do you have a video that shows how to take the pen apart from the beginning? I bought 2 of these not knowing what they were and need to start by taking them apart without breaking them! Great video. Thanks!
Thank you for the informative video. I have a similar pen but without the metal band. It says "350" on the barrel. My packing plug is not coming out but I will try soaking as you recommend. Where can I get the felt and rubber gaskets and washers I need to rebuild? Thank you.
I do appreciate your video! By the way, your accent sounds pretty much like northern British accent haha. I don't know if I'm right about this but I like the way you talk definitely! I have just got the exact same pen on Ebay.
There is a air hole at the bottom of the barell which releases the air vacum, however occaisionaly a small amount of ink will "push" out when the rod is pushed back. Thanks
Thanks for the very thorough video! I've got a couple of quetions though: if the model it's a newer one how can you disassemble the inner reservoir from the section without breaking the pen? If the end cap is wobbly on the piston rod, how can you make that wobbliness stop? Thanks again and keep making great videos!
The method you describe is quite difficult so i recommend sending it to a professional repair person before you break the pen. The end cap can be tightened as shown in the video. Good luck
Thanks for the informative video! When you unscrewed the section from the barrel (I see that the section in this case, as well as mine seems to only extend back as far as the end of the nib), should the nib turn independently of the feed? Tried loosening it up with soaking and heat, but twisting only seems to turn the nib itself the feed won't budge. Didn't want to force it so I stopped there for now. Thanks for the feedback.
Enjoy your videos. I have a Sheaffer (Triumph Lifetime nib) plunger vac fill desk fountain pen. It seems to have a permanent built in cartridge. The plunger will not come out of the nib feed hole. Plunger is larger than the hole. Not familiar with this type. Any suggests on how to repair.
Dear Stef please make video on Sheaffer Connaisseur. Only two video are available on TH-cam but I haven't like it. I have this pen hence querious to know details about this pen.
Another great video, thanks. Can the wrap-around Sheaffer nib be easily detached from the feed? I would like to clean the feed, maybe with a toothbrush.
1ImmanuelK Thanks for watching. Yes they can be removed but i would not recommend removing the nib just for cleaning. They normally have a Rosin based sealant which needs to be reapplied if removed. To clean the feed simply soak the nib section in water, you can still use the toothbrush. Good luck.
Im looking at getting one of these that needs restoration.... Doesent look that hard to me :)) Getting the parts could be a pain i guess... Maby i can create my own washer/plug.....
I have a question; how do you get the rod out of the pen? The plug is still inside the barrel and the remnants of the piston are inside the pen. The end of the pen is also attached to the pen with a metal ring or something with a grove that bisects it, and wobbles around instead of being firmly attached like yours.
I have recently purchased a similar one of these (Sheaffer vaccum-filler) on eBay and the first place I have emailed to ask about service/restoration have stated they don't do vaccum-fillers. Do you know a UK based company that does?
Thank you for your informative videos. I am trying to restore a Sheaffer Triumph but after soaking forever the section still won't budge. Would carefully applied hairdryer heat work?
+wabashamj It is difficult to comment without seeing the pen close up. Maybe it would be easier to send the pen to a professional before any serious damage is done. Good luck.
Thank you for your reply. Also, for your videos, always informative and inspiring. I was able to take apart the section, feed and nib, but the inner barrel with the plunger is now my next hurdle. There does not appear to have packing on the cap end and the feed end for some reason won't let the plunger through. This could be a cheaper model of a vac fil. I might seek profesional help. Regards Michael
Im not sure what you are trying to achieve. The vac-fil pens have both a screw fit and crimp fit nibs that are attached to the threaded sleeve with the feed that sits inside both so basically three parts.
Your videos have been invaluable in my various pen repair efforts over the last 6 months or so.. Am having trouble removing the split screw from the blind cap of a sheaffer vac-filler - it is very tight. Have soaked for a week in water and dishwasher liquid and heated it for quite a while- nothing yet. Do you have any tips? Would very much appreciate. Thanks again for your awesome videos!
Im glad they have been useful to you, thanks for watching. A little difficult to comment on your pen without having it in front of me. My advice would be have patience.
I was able to unscrew the nib with the threaded part but the nib itself is loose and doesn't fit tightly with the feed and I can easily spin it around while still attached to the threaded part?
Coming to this ten years later - great video, and just what I needed to renew the seals on my Sheaffer Lifetime Pocket(?). If anyone is having trouble gripping the nib to unscrew the front section, then a Bionic wrench and a short section of fuel-line hose is just the ticket.
The owner is willing to part with it for $65US because I helped him research a few Pelican pens and knew a rough value range of a Waterman pen off-hand. I think if it doesn't work, I'd wait to get it restored anyway for a while because right now I'm looking for a nice pen to eyedropper-convert. Wouldn't mind getting my hands on a broken-down Montblanc piston filler for that purpose, frankly...
Well, I picked up that Sheaffer pen. Turns out that for $70.20 I got _really_ lucky with a pen that still actually works flawlessly despite still having vintage innards all the way through. Whoever had this pen before me _really_ took care of it, because nothing has been restored on this pen until I polished the clip up a bit.
Thank you very much for the video and it is very informative. I just bought the same sheaffer Fountain on eBay quite recently and I am in the process of servicing/restoration the pen myself. When I disassemble the pen it was found that washer on the Plunger rod had disintegrated because of wear and tear over the years. Now please tell me where I can buy or making an order to purchase the washers. How much will it cause me to purchase it. I am living in Malaysia.
Dear Stef, How canI can in touch with you I would like you to do a restoration on my Sheaffer Imperial lV Fountain Pen. I am not far away from you in Preston Regards, Paul

Your more than welcome, if they have helped you then they have achieved there purpose. Good luck with your pens.
I love the look of the triumph nib and this pen is especially lovely due to the translucent barrel.
Hi Vincenzo...Well done with the nib, now for the rest of the pen. Take your time and gently does it....Good luck.

As always be patient, along with soaking try some dry heat. You can buy the washers from chillipea on ebay. Please mention I sent you. Good luck.

That is a good question. I would say leave the pen empty but periodically fill it with water just to lubricate. Good luck with your pen.
Grandmia Pens Thanks. I’ll do that.

Felix Lau Im glad you like them. Yes the accent is a Northern accent, it sounds quite normal to me :-)
So I get all that but how does the ink not get pushed out when the rod is pushed back in? I am not seeing how that works.
There is a air hole at the bottom of the barell which releases the air vacum, however occaisionaly a small amount of ink will "push" out when the rod is pushed back. Thanks

Where can one purchase the replacement rubber washers?
I have recently purchased a similar one of these (Sheaffer vaccum-filler) on eBay and the first place I have emailed to ask about service/restoration have stated they don't do vaccum-fillers. Do you know a UK based company that does?
Well done with your purchase, im sure there are restorers who would look at your pen for you. Search for UK pen dealers. Good luck.

So if I understand it right, the old rubber and felt washers you first showed are not replaced?
Like a lot of vintage parts it all depends on the condition whether you replace them or not. Thanks
This has to be the TH-cam video with the word "actually" used to most times!!!
Yes it could well be. My videos are not scripted or planed so occaisionally they do have these cock ups. Cheers

@@penkino1 Like a loving hug - plenty of warmth and just a little pressure.
what should I do if the rod is rusted ans heavily pitted?
Try and find a replacement. Good luck
I found one of these at a pawn shop in my home town, I think I might see if it works and pick it up if it does. Looks sorta beat up though.
If you can get it for the right price, it maybe worth having it restored. Go for it. Good luck.

I hope it helps, however im not sure about all the adhesive. Good luck with it.
Thanks so much. They were very helpful.
Hi! Do you know how to disassemble a cap like that? Need help please :)
I do not recall whether they have a inner cap to remove, so i can not give you a definitive answer. Sorry
How much do you charge for a servicing like that?
Sorry i do not discuss my services and prices publicly. Thanks
