      Andrew, which is a better method: paying instagram influencers to feature your music on their page, or doing facebook ads? The facebook ads seem to overwhelming and complex, like it's made for someone whose career is advertising, whereas Instagram is uch easier to just pay people to post your stuff and that's it.

    I'd like to add a 6th mistake if i may :]
    #6) *Misinterpreting data:* as stated in the video, your cost per conversion tends to drop the longer the campaign has to optimize. While most people know this, *they don't interpret the data like this* ! I.e. if your cost-per-conversion (CPC) changes per day, you should be looking at the DAILY CPC (in the Daily breakdown), NOT the overall campaign CPC (which is almost certainly higher)‼
    A real world example of why this matters: I launched a campaign at the end of January whose overall campaign CPC was stuck around $0.45 for like 2 weeks. Today, almost a month later, the overall campaign's CPC is $0.41...but the last 3 days, the ad has been converting at ~$0.23 CPC!!! If I only looked at the overall campaign, I wouldn't have recognized that this ad is now making a killing. Use the "Daily" Breakdown in Ads Manager, people‼

    Great video. I would also add that CPC could also be a concern in the reflections upon quality. If you'd want a genuinely interested audience, long term, narrowing down your targets severely can be a viable option, especially if you're in a niche genre and you know what type of listeners you need - even if your CPC's become much higher. Because you want to rein those hard core fans in, who might go beyond listening, following and playlisting and go buy merch, tickets, Patreon subs ect. If you get those fans from your campaigns, CPC can almost be as high as it needs to be, it doesn't matter. Of course, that don't justify poor ads or anything, but always, only, go for the lowest CPC, can also be a mistake.

  • @samuelesalvel4033

    I tried using different creatives but FB seems to "test" one creative at time, and spreads the daily budget inconsistently through all the creatives. Is there a way to force FB to use the same budget for all the creatives so in 3-4 days I can see which is actually performing the best? I thought about A/B test, but in can test just 2 ads at time, what if I have 6 different ads? and 4 different audiences? I need to run like 12 A/B tests?
    EDIT: after 7 days of campaign at 10 Euro per day FB tested out only 3 creatives out of 6. I don't have all that money to waste just waiting for FB to try the different ads! I need to know which is working in the first 2-3 days and then move on, right?

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Generally Meta seems to know best which ads will perform best, because they not only go off of cost per conversion data but other data like link clicks, likes, watch time etc... So most of the time when they only put much money in 3 out of 6 ads they had a good reason for it.
      I've tried forcing it in the past and most of the time when you force a particular ad creative to spend money you realize that Meta was correct in skipping it. Not always, but a lot of the time.
      You can make a new ad set with the 3 ad creatives they're not pushing and put a minimum budget on it to force it. But just keep that in mind.

    What you think about VideoView ads in three steps: 1st level targets cold audience to build a custom audience of let’s say 100.000 thruplays. Next is 2nd level again VideoViews with the source custom audience we built up before. Building a new custom audience based on theuplays of the 2nd level. Then I. The third level: traffic campaign on the custom audience of level 2 with 50.000 people in there. Maybe you get the costs down especially In tier 1 countries, gaining more followers on social media and you get audiences you can use again and again . Anyone tried that?

  • @manuelromero478
    @manuelromero478 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I wonder whether it is really useful to test different audiences at the same time. Facebook recommended that I combine several ad sets. If they are similar, there is an overlap in the target group and so you are bidding on the same audience twice. Thanks to the algorithm and Advantage+ Audience, Facebook finds the target group on its own. At least that's my experience.

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      In my experience you can bundle targets and get results that are just as great as if they were separate, however you'll never learn which targets work better or worse. This means you won't be able to improve over time as you run more campaigns because you never learn which targets work better or worse.
      I also have never had good results using Advantage+ Audiences for this type of campaign. It either ruins the entire campaign or results in a higher cost in my experience.

    ok say we get down to 25 cents a conversion. What's the point when spotify pays 0.003 cents per listen? I get that more traffic is good, and you want people to hear your music, but surely running these campaigns is going to put you in the negative, right?

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Most of the time you will not profit on campaigns like this. You're really doing this for top of funnel growth that will trickle into other aspects of your business, and for the long term impacts of this audience development.
      You CAN profit from campaigns like this due to the long term repeat listeners and the algorithmic playlist coverage but I wouldn't make it your primary objective. For example if you get 30k streams during a campaign a year out you'll likely have 90k with no further ad spend and no major algorithmic coverage.
      Another example, I had a song we drove to 12 million streams in 4 months and 10 million of those streams came from triggering the algorithm through Radio and Discovery Weekly.

    I think the first mistake is using paid Ads at all because when I think about it, I've never went and listened to a song that I heard on an Ad. I've found songs from T.V. and Film, but never from an online advertisement. Honestly, I usually skip them as fast as possible. I just feel like there is a better way to do this type of thing. I feel like you guys are just throwing away money on it most of the time.

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I’ve found a few bands from social media ads personally, but it doesn’t matter if you or I don’t regularly find music this way because the reality is millions of people do. Otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to drive over 150 million streams on Spotify alone using ads.
      It’s one thing to ‘feel like’ there is a better way and another to actually have a better way. I haven’t seen other methods as reliable as social media ads and I’ve been doing this for years and have worked with 2,000+ artists, managers and labels 1-on-1.
      The ads work better than playlisting, influencer campaigns, Marquee, Showcase, PR, radio campaigns etc…

    • @weshouser821
      @weshouser821 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AndrewSouthworth I understand your point but let me clarify, not only do I not regularly find music this way, I never find music this way. I never even see any ads for indie bands or anything like that ever. Never. So, it just makes me think. What if (for example) there was a different game being played? What if the idea is not to promote the musician's music, but instead get people to pay for "ads campaigns" through youtube videos (such as your own) and just pay you a percentage to "influence" them to do it? Or at least potentially drive aspiring music artists to your channel so that you personally can make more money with "real" advertisers or affiliate programs? Or even your class for example?

    • @weshouser821
      @weshouser821 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AndrewSouthworthI mean let's think about it. You (as a musician) can just make your own ads and post them on your own social media channels promoting your own music to your own followers so then the goal actually becomes "get more followers" so they can see your own ads, so if a person wanted to do that effectively they might be better off going out in the world and just giving people their instagram page or soundcloud page or whatever it is and just simply telling them "hey listen to my stuff" that right there is a way to advertise music or you could just make some silly youtube videos or tiktok videos that people actually will watch (maybe get involved with an indie film) and just put your music on it for them to shazam it or something of that nature? I mean the amount of money people pay for advertising you could probably get a billboard with your name on it right in the middle of the freaking city. I could be a bit naive about it all, but for some reason I don't think people are going to really care much about selling the artists product for them.

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You’ve never seen ads from artists? many people I know get them all the time and I get them sometimes. You only see ads based on the types of content you consume and engage with so you must never interact with music on social media.
      Not sure this grand conspiracy you’re claiming but it’s honestly pretty crazy. The amount of stuff that would have to be faked for that would be insane.
      Billboard ads are generally a waste of money as well. At least for music, nobody can hear your song. Not sure why you’re so against digital ads but fine with the idea of running billboard ads.

    • @weshouser821
      @weshouser821 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AndrewSouthworth You are putting words in my mouth. I didn't say anything about a grand conspiracy. I said paid Ads are a waste of money and no I don't see ads for independent artists but mind you the only social media I really use is facebook (sparingly) and youtube. I do find music on youtube but I don't on any other social media unless someone posts a youtube link to a song they like on facebook or something. No, I have never seen an ad pop up from an independent artist (that I can remember) and for the most part I skip ads. Even then it's usually selling a product not promoting an artist. What I said was that guys like you influence people to buy paid advertising from their music, and you make a profit from your own views, affiliate programs, Patreon and your online classes. If someone doesn't make it in music they assume it's because their music isn't good enough. Not because they are being screwed and their ads aren't really attracting any listeners or buyers and they are not promoting themselves otherwise (because they believe the ads work since they were told by guys like you that they do work). You got all these millions of plays but who are you musically? Seems like people know you from these youtube videos rather than your music. I dont see anyone reposting your shit on my facebook or anything. I just think you guys are fine making money off the backs of starving artists.
