Love your analysis! Even in just a few lines, I think Viktor’s words to Jayce were incredibly effective. “I didn’t have the benefit of a patron or a name. I simply believed in myself.” Jayce’s social standing in Piltover had just taken a huge blow, and the already minor House Talis would have lost a lot of respect (Caitlyn saying, “Your name’s no good now”). And of course he’d just lost the patronage of the Kirammans, an incredibly wealthy and influential family. In his mind, combined with being banned from the Academy, this means he’s lost everything. He has no chance to pursue his research anymore. It’s over. But then here comes Viktor, a man who never had either of these things, but who was still able to “make it” in Piltover. He’s reaffirming to Jayce that he doesn’t *need* what he’s lost to accomplish great things, and Viktor is the living proof of that. And as somebody who has lived a life of hardship, both as somebody from the Undercity and somebody who is physically disabled, he is able to offer a unique perspective that I think the people deeply ingrained in Piltover’s society couldn’t - AKA the people Jayce has always been surrounded by. And it’s this fresh perspective that gives Jayce his drive and will to live back. In my opinion, this talk with Viktor was another big life altering moment for Jayce.
God, I can´t wait for you to see season 2. I always wondered how this series looks from the psychological aspect and this just gives the show an even deeper meaning. Thank you!
One thing to remember about this show, every scene, every character, every line, every body movement, every eye movement counts. You can see it three, four or five times again and you see every movement, twitch, eye movement and you STILL FIND THINGS OUT! This makes this show so good!
Not only do they count, ever single movement is intentional--this is animation, after all. That movement was put in there for a reason. The crazy thing about this show is the attention to micro expressions of the characters.
I'm so glad you went back to this moment! It's such a pivotal moment for their story, and it happens so quickly that I feel like it can get sort of missed, even though it's spelled out pretty clearly. Viktor has just become the only person who believes in Jayce and his dream.
Honestly, despite why many people dislike him, I don't think many realize how easy it is to be Jayce. He's one of the most realistic characters IMO. Watching the show gives us perspective in a way Jayce can't know.
@@AW-xc1xcJayce is disliked? By who? Everybody in my friend group loves him, and he’s easily in my top three favourite characters from the show as well. No way could I comprehend people disliking him
@@SilverGeFer I'm glad you haven't experienced the torture of the fandom's hatred when S1 was the only thing we had for three years. He has become sort of an eye candy in S2, and he's always been a tool for jayvik in fandom, but apart from that, very few were vocal about loving him in S1 bc the hate was so strong. Even in S2 people immediately dropped their superficial love for Jayce (bc of his relationship w/ Viktor or bc "trauma made him hot" which is a disgusting way of wording it) the moment he once again acted "impulsively" due to mental illness or desperation for control. Something he's done since the beginning of the show.

I've been in the experience before of only really having one person keeping me afloat, and if you lose that one person it can feel like a rug has been pulled out from under you and you fall so much further because you don't have other safety nets to fall back on I imagine jayce is like that. The whole foundation of his mental wellbeing was invested in this one thing
Man am i glad i searched through this playlist of yours. There's barely any video essays on Jayce that focus on his mental illness and traumatic experiences, and while I've been recommended other reaction videos you've done, this one is what I've been looking for. I hope you make more about him and Viktor and even Mel in the future, because they're such poignant and complex characters, yet I feel only Viktor gets some of his deserved attention while Jayce gets less, and Mel gets practically none.
His research got banned because his office exploded, putting civilians at risk. But the explosion wasn’t even Jayce’s fault. He didn’t mess up. He understood the unstable nature of the crystal balls and handled them with care. The explosion only happened because of the robbery and how mindlessly the balls were handled during it. The council just ignores all that and overlooks the fact that Jayce is fully capable of handling them responsibly.
Imagine you build TNT in your kitchen at home. You handle things with care because you know of the unstable nature of dynamite. But then some accident happens and the explosives blow up your building. You're on the hook because *you decided* to create dangerous materials. Grayson said Jayce was in possession of banned materials. He went against the law. If he hadn't this would have never have happened. So yeah, he is partially at fault.
Defnitely partially his fault. There are rules for how to conduct potentially dangerous experiments. An more realistic analogy would be creating GMOs at your home and accidently creating a pathogen that infects your neighbours. Or like the other dude said creating some explosive substance and endangering your environment by not properly securing it. Jayce had those explosive crystals NOT properly secured. He literally left them accessible for kids in an unlabeled box in his apartment. Guess he never read a "keep away from children" warning. Also he sighns every page of his notes, but doesn't properly label anything? A "magic crystals - handle with care" warning wouldve been nice. And a proper lock. Jayce in fact did not handle his experiments responsibly...
@@Kornmeister my bad, I forgot that these were banned materials. But I still don't see the comparison to TNT, because it's more than just an explosive. He does a powder and hugs the first person he sees who doesn’t abandon him. Very similar… but no body treats jayce like powder. Which is an interesting double standard of the lonely cis white hetero male who is buff and attractive. People assume he’s being irrational first before looking at his problems seriously

Very nice video, I loved your analysis. Besides everything you mentioned here, I also think that Jayce had signs of not being in a good place mentally from the start. To anyone who hasn't read Jayce's Journal from The Council Archives, I recommend doing so (it's easy to find with a quick Google search). The entries "Far From Home", "Progress Day" and "A Powerful Partnership" give a huge insight to what was going on inside his head and his overall mentality. He was spiralling waaaay before the events of the first episode. He wasn't just devoted to his research, he was obsessed to the point of neglecting other important parts of his life (eating, sleeping, his relationships with his peers, his grades, etc). What's even more, he already knew that the materials he was handling were dangerous and that he was very much risking his own life, and yet... he kept working on it. Disregarding his own safety, even when he had a support system and patrons and a friend. When his mother said "he isn't in his right mind", I think she really meant it. She must have seen, over the course of many years, how his son was becoming more and more consumed by his dream. I think she said it with good intentions, because of how much she cares for him and because she wanted him to stop with that thing that brought him so much distress and unhealthy habits (even if that also meant taking away his source of joy). These entries, I think are very telling: ---- Entry #2 I've found myself recently staying awake until morning. You know what they say... Oh my God...thank you so much for commenting about this. My stomach DROPPED when i read entry #7, that is so heartbreaking. I'm going to read these now, and I think Arcane could've benefitted from at least mentioning this in dialogue between Jayce and Ximena
I have been wondering for a while now if Viktor realized that Jayce was about to jump or if he thought he just startled him, because i dont think Viktor realized it in the moment? But i am really not sure
I think Arcane S1 mostly does a great job of introducing the characters and giving us a glimpse of what is happening inside of them. But, Just Like you, I was Not getting this scene on my First watch. Even after understanding why he might be at this Point, I dont feel like it is Set Up well. We see him lose a lot in this episode, but still he was determined to overcome the step backs. I had liked to see more of his struggles (like seeing him shunned by more than like two people or getting thrown of Academy grounds) to make his attempt be more understandable. In short, I dont think you were wrong as such on that matter. The series could have done a better job on setting things up. Even though his actions might be understandable after a deeper Look.
To be fair, my immediate reaction was "Jayce, do you think you are REALLY out of options?" I was in a similar posiotion years ago, so now i know you can rebuild your life and enjoy it even if it would be much different from what you imagined. And then i remembered how i felt at that time and ... yeah, Jayce, buddy, i see it now
I think he tried to find this in the Kirammans. They never showed it, but I imagine if he's friends with Caitlyn this must mean he had some kind of close relationship with her parents. For one to not show his face and dehumanize you by saying you're a misfit and that your name means nothing, and the other to not even let you get a word in while staring down at you in complete disdain... It really makes me wonder if they were close at all. And if they _were,_ I can only imagine how damaging that was to his self-worth and will to live.
I understand the people who are saying that he had his whole life's work taken from him, yes. But if you just take one more step back, you'll see that his whole life's work was illegal research anyway. Did he not know that this was against the fundamental ethos of the city? While he was working on this over the years, did he not consider that it could all be taken away because, you know, of the law? In our world this would be like if you were from a European country where researchers and therapists were allowed to use low doses of psychotropics for effective therapy and you saw it help people, even people who you cared about. Then you came to the US and studied research on this. Except, it's illegal in the US and researchers can only do the most surface level research with these chemicals. Now maybe you will pin a lot of hopes on the law changing, or people seeing the actual value of psilocybin in psychotherapy. But if you pushed your research beyond the law, then got in trouble for it and couldn't continue, would you be surprised? Would you have not considered that as a very real possibility? Maybe you had a back up plan for what to do with your life? In my mind, he was already being affected by the Arcane and he was having a withdrawal response that was completely irrational, like withdrawal is.
Also, Jayce has never really faced any real hardship or adversity. He may not be as rich as the Kiramman's or the Medarda's but he still had a fairly privileged life when compared to Viktor. Having been cut-off from his life's work and his patronage, Jayce never even considered the alternative. I'm not trying to trivialize Jayce as being a weak character but pointing out that he's never known real adversity up till this point and his instinct was just to give up, everything.
I disagree tbh, I don’t think that’s why. Yeah he’s more privileged than people from the undercity, I’m not denying that. But we see from the start him and his mother almost dying in his childhood, we don’t know where they were going or what’s happening but we see see a mage save his mothers life and jayce be given the rune. To me it seems less to do with hardship but more obsession, that mage saved his mother’s life and gave him the gem. From what we can tell, it seems like Jayce has been obsessed with creating magic his whole life. Probably because he feels like he has to, that that happened for a reason and it’s the only thing really holding to life because his work matters to him more than his own life. We hear his mother say ‘he’s not in his right mind’ and I think she’s right, when you look at his journal entries he’s spiralling. He’s so obsessed with creating magic his grades are dropping, he’s not eating or resting. His mother is worried and so is Heimerdinger, and Jayce is genuinely wondering if being expelled would be worse than being killed by his dangerous work. He definitely isn’t in the right mindset even before the explosion happened. I’m not saying he’s not privileged compared to viktor, but I don’t think him going to end his life is to do with privilege. I think it’s hard to see since he’s masking, but I do think he isn’t mentally in his right mind.
@@clover2739 i think you both have a point here - "Jayce never even considered the alternative". Was it because this research was his obsession? maybe. But could it also be the fact that he had somewhat easy access to all the resources? also can be true. Like, sure he is ready to do some "risky" things like going to the undercity for parts, but he was also in a fairly safe spot - he didn't have to work to provide for his family, he had patronage, he had access to education. This was his norm and he had no real reason to plan for something else. And it does make for one rude awakening when suddenly the road to his ONLY real goal is blocked by the things that never used to be a problem and he is not equiped to solve
@@clover2739I sort of agree, but after he and his mother came to Piltover, his life was definitly more privileged than most. Like when Jayce said "Nobody believes in me" when he talked about the hex crystals, Viktor replied "Nobody's ever believed in me." Jayce can't see his support system, although it doesn't include his early hex tech work.
How about the obvious answer? OF COURSE it's a rash decision. Suicide is almost ALWAYS a rash decision. That's what makes it so tragic! I don't think we can say that there's never a case where it was decided only after considering all possible viewpoints, but I'm fairly certain that such cases are extremely rare. In the vast majority of cases, the person is only considering one thing- whatever it was that caused them to think about doing it.
Tw: discussion of ideation Hun. Most of us folks who deal with ideation, we grasp at whatever we can to stay. A lot of people don't understand that you are fighting your own brain that is telling you, over and over, that what keeps you here, is invalid. Many, many folks who fight that fight have considered every single option. Every single reason not to do it. And if all of those reasons disappeared, at once, we wouldn't be here. While the ideation itself can theoretically be outlasted, or distracted... it can come flooding back the second your thoughts go back there. Trust me, a huge amount of folks who go through with it? We have long, long, LONG considered everything.
HEAVY ARCANE SPOILERS You can also tell by how one of them was way harder to persuade that one's reason was losing everything, while the other's is harming those you care about. It's harder to help someone just by being there if they are afraid to hurt you again
I feel you see him too much like a real person. All of the characters are ... characters in a story, though. Complex and very fleshed out, but still characters. Used as narrative devices, to highlight certain human aspects and how those aspects interact with one another. Though of course it helps if the characters are believable. Though, again, a believable character doesn't necessarily act "like a real person" but more importantly "in character". And then you say that you tried to apply what you expect from a story character: One who is forbidden to do what he wants usually finds a way to do it anyway. Yeeeaaaahh... See, why would someone find a way "to do it anyway"? Because it's important to them! So that box IS checked! It's just that Jayce DOES listen to authority (in a kind of childish naive way... He spoke of magic when he shouldn't, for example), and with authority saying No, he just doesn't see a way, in character, to go on. Only Viktor, telling him "don't ask for permission", gives him a way.
Love your analysis! Even in just a few lines, I think Viktor’s words to Jayce were incredibly effective. “I didn’t have the benefit of a patron or a name.
And then i remembered how i felt at that time and ... yeah, Jayce, buddy, i see it now
He did say he'd find someone else to help him tbf. That's why I found it to be out of place like you did initialy .
@scarletmoon95 I mean, they were his patrons so I figured they would be the first he'd go to. I just wouldn't expect them to be the last as well.
Most of us thought the same
How about the obvious answer? OF COURSE it's a rash decision. Suicide is almost ALWAYS a rash decision. That's what makes it so tragic! I don't think we can say that there's never a case where it was decided only after considering all possible viewpoints, but I'm fairly certain that such cases are extremely rare. In the vast majority of cases, the person is only considering one thing- whatever it was that caused them to think about doing it.
Tw: discussion of ideation
Hun.
Damn I’ve never been this early. 2 minutes.
❤❤❤ nice

🔥
Really close to ending it, one person.
Guys......
Reminds me of that timebomb thing, dont u dare Google timebomb btw.
HEAVY ARCANE SPOILERS
You can also tell by how one of them was way harder to persuade that one's reason was losing everything, while the other's is harming those you care about. It's harder to help someone just by being there if they are afraid to hurt you again
in the alternate timeline in season2 episode 7 jace goes to a different timeline so I think he actually did it in that timeline that ekko was in
Spoiler...? Why do you feel the need to spoil him
@@NimVim yea i forgot people have not seen all of arcane lol
