    For any would be "dragon Rider" wannabes out there it seems Dragonnel would be the slightly safer choice over actual true Dragons. Plenty of people have "conversations" with their pets, and for more intelligent companions the confidence of cogent communication is a huge boon on and off the battlefield. Problems can arise when mounts have a strong independent streak though. A true dragon, while willing to carry a rider, could easily start giving YOU orders and taking control of every combat situation rather than simply taking commands.

    In DnD the term "apex predator" really gets thrown around a lot and quickly falls apart in the face of magical all consuming monsters like the tarrrasque and kraken. I know there's some parts of our world where foxes are considered apex predators because nothing else is around, but it still feels weird comparing grisly bears as apex predators to dragons as apex predators.

    • @ssfbob456
      @ssfbob456 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The term really only implies to an environment. For example, a jaguar is very much an apex predator of the area its in, but introduce a tiger, or even a group of humans, and it becomes competition at best.

    • @ianyoder2537
      @ianyoder2537 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ssfbob456 I know that's what I was talking about with the foxes. But when he said that they where apex predators in their own right just after saying dragons hunted them for challenge, it just felt like a contradiction.

    • @Lurklen
      @Lurklen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I mean on any one world there just can't be that many krakens, and shouldn't be more than one or two terrasque. But yeah, they would be the apex. Frankly, there's not enough prey to support a world with this many predators of this size, even if they eat each other, and even if we assume pre-industrialization population levels of wildlife, unless the populations of these large predators is quite small (this is in part why they are a problem heroes must deal with, as we expand we bump into territorial zones). In D&D there's always a bigger fish. As Pickett mentions, populations would dwindle (this has to be true of dragons in general as well) and so in areas where the dragonnel are left but dragons are not, these guys would be apex (frankly anywhere you have a large flying predator they would be top tier) but the areas where both exist would be fewer and further between as there cannot be large populations left. This would leave some room for other creatures to become the apex in their areas.
      It does beg the question of how you can even have things like bears in worlds with creatures like this, how do they fit into the ecosystem, and do they? Like drakes are pretty super capable compared to many creatures in the animal world, I think they would quickly outpace many of the animals we were used to, and those animals would be unlikely to exist or thrive. Wtf is a hawk gonna do when there's a comparable sized drake that can breath fire at it? Who is going to be more successful long term? As populations dwindle you might see some creatures rise in the ranks so to speak, but would they have come to be at all if things like drakes and dragonnels existed?

    • @ianyoder2537
      @ianyoder2537 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Lurklen I get what you're saying and I agree, I was just pointing something out. As for what you're saying at the end with how can mundane animals compete, I've given that some thought and have 2 coexisting answers that help shape the world:
      1: The world of dnd (or at least in my campaign) is simply, and for lack of a better word, _bigger._ The tallest mountain that the gods live on reaches the stratosphere, there are trees so massive entire towns can be built inside their canopy, the ocean has no bottom it simply enters the plain of water, ect. With all these grandiose spectacles it's pretty easy to say "Yes there are guards the size of corteges growing in the wild, in fact such massive plant life helps support the ecosystem of gargantuan creatures." Besides, just imagine the impact on both the players and the world that a sea monster that grazes on barrier reefs like a cow does grass. It's casually tearing apart an ecosystem by eating razor sharp coral and you have to fight it, or at least drive it off.
      2: Magical creatures require magical resources, that's why monsters have hoards. The largest and most powerful mundane animals are basically dinosaurs, threatening and impressive to be sure, but less so than a dragon. However dragons have much more narrow and dangerous living conditions: Dragons must find a layer that's not only in a suitable climate, it must fit their elemental attributes, be close enough to the magical plants and animals that will nourish them, and be fare enough away from another dragon to avoid conflict. _Then_ they need to make a hoard, there is power in belief and even the gods believe gold and jewels to be valuable. But because it's so valuable you've now made your home a target.
      In short, larger food chain and non magical animals are easier.

    A bit of a pet peeve of mine but I can't stand dragon (or dragonnel) riders with swords. Kind of like that Warhammer 40k meme with a tank commander swinging a sword on top of a tank while shouting to the driver "drive us closer I want to hit them with my sword".
    How do you even get close enough to use a sword when on top of that beast. Even a spear/lance is debatable given the size and type of movement.
    Given how these creatures work and what kind of natural weapons they have, it is probably better for the rider to just be a "driver" and have the creature actually do the attacks (maybe with improved "natural weapons" made of metal/enchanted). Or do ranged/magic of course.

Most maneating lions, for example, take on a diet of humans after sustaining injuries from porcupines that leave them unable to hunt gazelle, buffalo and the like. Their intelligence is similar to what we'd expect to see in orca or other dolphin species. I personally find their intelligence to be much more interesting than other facets of these creatures. There is no universal way to measure intelligence, but the best we have is probably the encephalization quotient or EQ, a comparison of brain size to body size. Behind humans in EQ are orca, a few types of bird like parrots and corvids, and everything else trails quite a bit behind those animals. So for Dragonnels to be as smart as they are, they seem to be somewhat less intelligent than orca (which have unique cultures per pod, including unique languages and learned hunting techniques) but are close to the more intelligent birds.

Mapping any kind of definitive ecosystem would be almost impossible. It would be fun to try.

      Knights isn't the best use for a flying mount, imho. It's a pain to engage foes on the ground in melee while it is flying even with a spear, and the beast is a huge target when walking. These things should be treated/used more or less like WWI aircraft

      Yes you can still have the knight's prestige and heraldry and nobles and stuff if you want.
      (WWI fighter pilots were more or less like this, so it's not strange)
      But the role of the rider is not "mounted infantry" or infantry anymore, it's a vehicle operator, he isn't there to deal damage, he is there to control the beast.
      For example war elephants in real life. The guy on top of a war elephant wasn't there to take swings at the enemy, the elephant was the weapon.
      Plus you had dudes on the back with arrows or other ranged weapons. Those would technically be "mounted infantry" but nobody likes ranged knights for some reason.

    Adult male dragonnels are gold color, .. ?
    So one hunting human herds could spread rumors of a rogue gold dragon hunting human live stock.
    Local young adult gold dragon response in front of the local judge, " It was not me."
    Prosecutor, " So you are claiming it was one of those rarely seen .. dragonnel .. are you ?"
    young gold dragon, " Yes it has to be one of those dragonnels."
    2.) I would not put it past the dragonnel mounts going to a stable to pick a challenge over the best stall in the location. They may even regarded such stables to be a form of massage parlors for baths and rub downs. Even alligator parks or places that keep giant lizards have been condition from youth to enjoy belly rubs. So after a trained dragonnel lost its ridder in combat they will return to a stable for .. pampering .. and easy food. Like a dog or cat well trained, as soon as you pick up your hairbrush the .. pet .. thinks it is for them to get some pampering time.
    Also such stables would draw other dragon types such as young coppers to grooming dens for .. pampering.
    3.) Years ago running an AD&D game, one person PC a dwarf fighter/rogue that went out and club/dragged a live baby red dragon out from the forest and put it in his root cellar brew house for dry aging herbs. The red dragon raised to be more of a chaotic neutral with playful cat like evil intent, it wore a hat of alternation to reduce its size over the years to sleep in his crib. The dwarf wife mothered him to no end.
    Depending on the DM, an onery juvenile red dragon or young adult green dragon would try to visit a dragonnel stable for some pampering and a meal. With the spell Alter Self a true dragon could change enough of their appearance and scent not to panic the stable runners or dragonnel stalled there.
    With 3.5e rule system, base stable hand would be rogue2/expert1, n/pcs .. treat the rogue's Evasion ability to avoid bites/claw swipes and have Animal handling ( exotic/dragonnel):6ranks. and
    diplomacy or bluff at 7 ranks to sweet talk the beasts. Use skill synergy rules for bluff at 5ranks to give a +2 bonus to Animal Handling checks to calm the beast, raising A.H.to +8 modifier.
    Dragon complimenting the skill of the stable hand working the scrub brush behind the dragon's ears for a good rub/scratching. Describe the dragon's delight like a cat/dog when you get that spot behind their ear .. just .. right.
    Base on the mage caster level of Cantrip they could make a boar taste like chicken, or a wheel barrel of sewer rats taste like ribbie steak cuts.
    Cat playing with a mouse, a dragon playing with a giant rat and rubbing it around in Bar-B-Q sauce or sweet & sour.
