Yeah I agree. not trying to knock them I'm sure the nerves are tough but when I first saw him playing with this my guess was a plat could beat him and honestly maybe even the gold. Thought the gold game would be the first real test to see. For sure 95% of diamonds & champs cook him on that thing if nerves aren't a factor.

THis is really interesting to watch - this is literally an SSL stripped of all mechanics. But he can still get pretty high with SSL game sense + reading. Its very instructive how training your reading can benefit you both in mechanical and non-mechanical gameplay.
Definitely plays into the notion that you don’t need niche mechanics to be good at the game, just decent game sense
Speaking of unorthodox input methods, i play rocket league on full size keyboard only, no mouse. Under the right hand i have boost on End key, jump on PgDn, air roll left on Left arrow, air roll right on Numpad 7, rumble power up on PgUp, look back on Numpad 5. Plat 2 because i solo queue and never do warm up xD

Before I quit playing RL I was keyboard only, WSAD, directional air roll QE only, L for jump, ; for boost (one button right from L). I was champ 2
But Leth, they don't want you smurfing because that hurts the competitive integrity; also EPIC GAMES: Allows hackers to dominate the ladder, removes rocket league trading, etc.

Fr I’m diamond I can aerial really well and hav the mechs of a champ not that mechs rlly matter but i usually carry my tm8s in comp and my Defense is champ lvl and sometimes even GC lvl sometimes I get like 5 saves in a match my tm8s are usually ass at the game or ball chasing fools or the other team is champs when I get the champ tm8 they don’t know how to aerial like why can’t I get better tm8s

Reminds me of the old NeGcon and Jogcon controllers than Namco released for Ridge Racer Type 4 (well, I don't think the NeGcon was *for* R4, but it was heavily advertised for use with it!)
To me this just goes to show how far you can make it in RL without having to have crazy mechanics. There are many aspects of the game outside of how many flip resets you can do that are arguably more important when it comes to actually winning games

@@WaterFlow489 to be fair thats literally me at my prime (I quit RL a while ago) and I was c2 in 2s (carried by much better teammate of mine) + d1/d2 in 1s which I sucked at. I still dont see myself losing to him.

Leth hits cleaner flicks on an N64 ergonomic disaster of a controller against a GC than I ever have.
That was so fun to watch. Also acts as a great road to Champ without mechanics, so to speak.
What I'm noticing in the lower lobbies is that you shouldn't fake a kickoff if you don't know what to do with it afterwards

Heres my two cents... Yes, Leth is an absolute GOAT and is ahhhhmazing at the game; mechanics and game sense are top notch... BUT! I think, when you're playing at a certain rank, your skills are of that rank and you expect your opponents to be similar and more importantly MAKE CERTAIN MOVES. At your own rank you can anticipate more easily what your opponent will do because, as close as can be, you have the same mindset. When someone comes in wildly above or wildly below your skill level, you have no idea what they are going to do. For example misses made by Leth, genuine mistakes, turned into fakes and then into goals because at a higher level, you just dont expect your opponent to miss, lol. So it KIIIIIND OF goes in Leth's favour to be bad and capitalise on accidental fakes. Thats my two cents. Leth obviously also has the skills & sense to then finish & secure a goal, im not saying a B2 would necessarily beat a C2, but when you're playing so erratic with a dodgy, but still useable, controller, its a bit harder to counter.
As a 1980's Atari veteran it may be more comfortable to rotate the controller towards your left hand and play it sideways. Bad for youtube visuals but may feel more natural. Change some button bindings and you'll be SSL in less than a week. ;)
Next up, Leth uses his microwave buttons to beat up to GC.

Some people aren't use to the change from 2s to solo so good possibility he was a champ.
I keep going back and forth on the C Button rotation... pretty sure it is bad that they rotate with the wheel though. That would only be good if you hit the C button with the same hand that is rotating the wheel. Which seems unlikely/not ideal. It would probably be better to not have them rotate because you'd be more likely to press them with your non-wheel hand.
yeah I was wondering about it, but honestly the play is probably to use those buttons with the steering hand. The hand holding the controller is also what controls the trigger, and the like 5 main buttons. Letting go of the controller also probably means that the steering hand will be unable to steer, since the controller needs to be ''anchored' so you can actually turn the wheel without turning the entire controller
@@Exibita mandatory claw grip on the steering hand. Press the C Buttons with your index finger is probably the way.
But hey, this is a 30 year old niche controller being used for a game with an insane amount of control. So... fair.
I think leth was the only 1's player in that lobby. He was being hand fed the ball and given a whole football field to work with. GC was hardcore messing around. He had to many opportunities just to end the match quickly. I have no words for the champ 2.

This is a really good video to show how important game sense is. The game against Jacob was def before Leth fully understood his limitations and what play-style would work best. Jacob also did good on taking advantage of any mistakes Leth made. The other players were nervous about over-comitting and Leth was able to use that to his advantage to setup easy goals that just required good flicks (which is what he is arguably best at). The GC player had the game sense to understand Leth's limitations and the confidence to go heavy on the offense.
Not saying I would do any better than the bronze. I've played rocket League once (got it on games with gold back in like 2016 and played maybe 5 games). But, just thought it was really interesting how well this video shows the importance of game sense and confidence.

The next challenge should be you using a regular controller, but wearing oven mits or something. So instead of a nerfed controller it's your hands that are nerfed. Or play with one hand only or something. Or just your feet (not asking for the foot cam lol).

As many people in the comments section have pointed out. The Platinum ranked and above players didn't perform any "advanced" mechanics that would be prevalent in "actual" ranked games until the very end with the Grand Champ. I believe this was probably because the players and Leth entered into a kind of gentlemen's agreement where they (the players) would handicap themselves in order to give Leth a sort of fighting chance given his own handicap (the N64 controller). After all, having a video where platinum and above players dunk on Leth left, right, and center, while he is using the terrible controller would not really be an engaging video.
This point can be rendered null if he stated the rules of the video in his Discord server, but I wouldn't know since I'm not in the server.
Also, I don't recall him saying anything at the start of the video concerning any handicaps, other than the controller (or on the ranked player's side).
Also, Also, the players can straight up be lying about their ranks (i.e. Diamond in 3v3's instead of 1v1's, a disparity in actual skill vs. being carried by your team).
I respect Leth for what he has done in the community but this video comes off as a little bit disingenuous as there was no disclaimer to the handicaps on both sides.
