Thanks for posting this video. I had no idea Volvo made the C303, which, with differential locks, is very capable. You've attracted a number of ludicrous responses, but they must be jealous of all the fun you've had and can have any time you like. Please enjoy many happy miles and vistas.
When the going got tuff i put chains on all four, i owned 9 4x4's the Bronco was by far the best in mud or snow. I'm a Finn in Minn. the snow and mud get deep.
ya know ,, i took a second look and the tires do look pretty good ,, it's not their fault the vehicles , especialy the bronco that my cousin got stuck with all the time ,,, are light good vid ,,,,,, oh , back home we used to buy special snow plow tires ,, not to wide but tall and heavy luged , dug in great
What a big difference having portal axles makes, the C303 mostly glides through the snow while the Bronco tends to push it. The Bronco does a respectable job though.
Keep the Bronco, but loving the Volvo C303! Yeah, you only really want to use the dif locks as and when not because you think you might need them. Great vid though. Wish we here in Britain had snow like that.... :-(
Both made for different purpose except off road. both are good. The big one is big and is going to do better in this type of test. Nice vid. at the 3.54 the big one got stuck for moment. You can see drive wheel slips an other wheel on same alxe does not turn. that means open differential. of not locked at that time. Might be open differential in rear too. Get them locked and a lot more action will occur.
those big tires are mint. I always feel though that it limits articulation when rock crawling though, but that's not what these were built for I guess.
All right, but our experience is so much surface you can gain in the snow. That means wide tyres and very low pressure. In this movie it is very nasty cold sugar-like snow. Hard to drive in. Have nice off roading over there! Greetings from Sweden.
very impressed with both trucks. what size tires on the bronco? i thought the volvo was locked but in the 1 spot where it had to back up a few times it appeared not to be.
Nice Big Truck and Tires ,However this truck need lockable differentials for the front as well as the rear .Spinning with one front and one rear really sucks ! is this truck turbo charged ? it seems a little gutless. It will require more power once you put those other to wheels to use with lockable differentials .
thats curious, why do you think that? i've seen videos where people walk along the tracks left behind and when they step off the tracks they sink in the snow up to their hips. all about surface area and displacing weight right
I wish we got that much snow here.... I was wondering about chains myself. Would it help to put a mini (small) V-plow type diverter on the front to help with ground clearance issues? It would get the snow out of the way a bit to keep the underbody from dragging in the snow
Deflate those tires down to 5 psi and you will get a lot better traction on the snow. But you might need bead locks to keep them on the rims at that low psi.
+Willilly Bab How in the hell you know more about deflation of tires than people that live in 3 ft of snow every fking day in the winter ? Fking idiot . In this country people drive in conditions like this threw out winter season .
If you look at the video you will see the tires are plowing or pushing snow in front of them. I love your Volvo no doubt it will go most any where. But if its tires were half as wide and even kept the same height you would be amazed with the narrower more open aggressive radio tires would do for it. I live in Alaska and have tried all types of tires..narrower in snow and most mud is best.I meant my reply in the most positive way..Cheers
That's what I was thinking. It looks like those, while they work impressively considering how bad wheels really are in snow, would be crippled in a bad storm, with snow deeper than the axles.
Best thing to do, is to have wide tires, then lower the air pressure in the tires to around 5 psi... and you can go just about anywhere... even in dry loose snow.
You say that they should just ride a snowmobile or snowcat? When there is snow like this, and the main highways have been cleared but not the back roads, I don't think you can drive your snowmobile or snowcat down the highway to get to work, etc. I had a Bronco, and it was set up to handle severe snow. It certainly came in handy when only major roads where clear and side streets where not. I could go places when others had to stay home. So I hope that answers your question DUH. Don't be a hater.
@rebel4iceni do you have selectable lockers on both front and back of the bronco? O and what's the drinking age in germany or denmark or whatever your speaking?
When the ground is covered with snow most of the year, it might be a good idea to plan for it. That's like asking why do they build surfboards? That's what boats are for.
You mean the Volvo? This is a civilian C303. The military is named Tgb 11. Civilian has 12 V and always a winch. The military 24 V and no winch. They are even in 6-wheel versions. Short or long. C 306, Tgb 13, Tgb 20. C306 very rare.
It was not easy. Cutting up the wheel houses and a couple of new springs in front. (Rear I didn`t need it.) The springs were forced up about 3 inch in a shop. The rims were widened to 20 inch. Most of it outside as I remember. I also got full steering clearence (almost) . Sometimes the wheels got jammed into the fenders though. Straight ahead I have no problems. But I admit there is no vacation to steer sometimes. Another fact is that I have had no problems with the wheel bearings so far.

This looks like way too much fun... I needed one of these when i got stuck in a driveway a year ago. Thanks for putting this together!
Вольво C 303 Laplander это именно то, что нужно для рыбалки и охоты. Супер машина!
Тогда уж сразу БТР купи
Заодно от егерей отбиться можно
That Volvo is a cool machine. Wish they had them here in the US. If they do, I'm sure they aren't cheap.
Wow cool that's the kind of weather I like I love snow. And also cool car. One of them looks like a off road milk float
Awesome!! I can't believe the Bronco gets through that deep snow!
That was really neat to see that video. I had no idea how fun that must be.
When the going got tuff i put chains on all four, i owned 9 4x4's the Bronco was by far the best in mud or snow.
I'm a Finn in Minn. the snow and mud get deep.
Momentum is key, just like driving in sand - keep a smooth steady pace
Its good to see some one who knows how to drive in snow. Too much gas pedal only gets you in trouble.
My first car was a red '70 Bronco 4X4 back in Vermont. Most fun driving I ever had...
ya know ,, i took a second look and the tires do look pretty good ,, it's not their fault the vehicles , especialy the bronco that my cousin got stuck with all the time ,,, are light good vid ,,,,,, oh , back home we used to buy special snow plow tires ,, not to wide but tall and heavy luged , dug in great

Because were not boring , we enjoy life and the outdoor. Maybe you should give it a do you never know you might love it
Keep the Bronco, but loving the Volvo C303!
Yeah, you only really want to use the dif locks as and when not because you think you might need them.
Great vid though.
Wish we here in Britain had snow like that.... :-(
вот так техника! и водилы молотки!
I love those old Bronco bodies.
Both made for different purpose except off road. both are good. The big one is big and is going to do better in this type of test. Nice vid. at the 3.54 the big one got stuck for moment. Those are sweet wheels. Nice machine
Holy smokes. Portal axles for the win! Looks like the Volvo's undercarriage is barely touching the snow.
gorgeous bronco
That was enjoyable to watch. Very nice.
@1967800 That C303 will run circles around that Bronco. Yes, the Bronco looks killer, but in that snow, I would want the Volvo any day, period!
какой красивый лес!!!
This vid makes me wan´t winter now! Longing to try my snow chains :)
those big tires are mint. I always feel though that it limits articulation when rock crawling though, but that's not what these were built for I guess.
this volvo, it seems like something i would want.
All right, but our experience is so much surface you can gain in the snow. That means wide tyres and very low pressure. In this movie it is very nasty cold sugar-like snow. Hard to drive in. Have nice off roading over there! Greetings from Sweden.
I like that Volvo!

kids: it snowed last night....looks like we're not going to school
dad: dont worry kids...i'll get you to school 8)
kids: aww 8(
i just cant get over how good that bronco looks. it could maybe use some slightly more narrow tires though... btw, what motor does it have?
holy crap! volvo made something cool? with final drives too!
I had a 66 Bronco with 750-16's on it, i could drive 30 mph in that little bit of snow.
Love that Volvo.
Nice Big Truck and Tires ,However this truck need lockable differentials for the front as well as the rear .Spinning with one front and one rear really sucks ! is this truck turbo charged ? it seems a little gutless. It will require more power once you put those other to wheels to use with lockable differentials .
@ticker511 Yes. Chains can be good at some times, but could also take you down to the ground. And that´s something we try to avoid. In deep snow.
I think the Unimog is a little better than the Volvo C303, but the Volvo is still a force to be reckoned with!
Have you considered a set of 360/70R20 tractor tyres? They do wonders on snow and suit the volvo axles nicely.
bronco is badass
We call that 'detained'. If he were stuck he would still be there.♫
Thank you! Have a nice evening.
thats curious, why do you think that? i've seen videos where people walk along the tracks left behind and when they step off the tracks they sink in the snow up to their hips. all about surface area and displacing weight right
@rebel4iceni Nice bronco! Have you guys ever aired down? If you went to 3 or 4 psi on the broco it would float like a dream!
I wish we got that much snow here....
I was wondering about chains myself. Would it help to put a mini (small) V-plow type diverter on the front to help with ground clearance issues? It would get the snow out of the way a bit to keep the underbody from dragging in the snow
@rebel4iceni thats really freakin' cool. I wish our bronco had a 502. what kind of horsepower numbers do you figure at the tires?
Yes. But we do have locks. The Volvo has manual locks. The Bronco Torsen in front and lim slip rear.
what about tracks? here in america the biggest company to make them are called mattracks, they seem to work wonders in the snow
It all started with the invention of the tyre.
Yes, with this type of tyres. Sorry to say, Mike Thompsson isn´t with us anymore, nor is the wide 46 :es.
Wow. Got more of that?
Deflate those tires down to 5 psi and you will get a lot better traction on the snow. But you might need bead locks to keep them on the rims at that low psi.
Sorry. Late answer. (Trouble with YT. Could not answer)
The answer is: They are already far below 5 psi. In fact 2,5-3 psi
Still at 1,5 psi and rough driving i kept my tires on witout bead locks.
+rebel4iceni 3 is perfect for soft snow on 42" and bigger. :)
Btw. No front lockers on the green Golfcart? :P
Ah, nvm LOL.
+Willilly Bab How in the hell you know more about deflation of tires than people that live in 3 ft of snow every fking day in the winter ? Fking idiot . In this country people drive in conditions like this threw out winter season .
Respect !!!!
There are lock-able diffs,(Both front and rear) but its nice to try without them sometimes. Usually I dont need them in snow.
If you look at the video you will see the tires are plowing or pushing snow in front of them. I love your Volvo no doubt it will go most any where. How big are the wheels on the volvo?? looks huge!
Best thing to do, is to have wide tires, then lower the air pressure in the tires to around 5 psi... and you can go just about anywhere... even in dry loose snow.
You put some of those skinny WWII jeep tires on that Bronco and it will plow right through that snow like hot butter, I Guarantee !!!
@rebel4iceni are the those mickey Thompson tires? the tread pattern looks very similar to either the Baha claws or TTC's
Hä såg kul ut som fan!
Get the axles off the ground a bit more. Is that a laplander?
Really low tire pressure helps too.
@niIIer1 Det är Mike Thompson 46x19, 50 på 15 tum fälg som är 20 tum breda. På Volvon alltså. Broncon har också M/T men ngt mindre
SUPER!!!...
You say that they should just ride a snowmobile or snowcat? Those sure chew in the snow .
@rebel4iceni you forget that the snow is a powder snow, so it does not matter if you inflate the tires there.
@rebel4iceni do you have selectable lockers on both front and back of the bronco? O and what's the drinking age in germany or denmark or whatever your speaking?
Well that went well
@MrOk69 It is a swedish army whicle like a Hummer, but designed to fit thru at least 80% of all trees in a Swedish forrest
look at the tires on ANY arctic cruiser... giant inflatables. but yes, in the States, narrow is better for regular winter driving!
Maybe a removable skimmer plow on the front just wide and low enough to clear the belly from snow and prevent stalling
that volvo is beautiful id love to see how it compares to a unimog
Härliga bilder på goa bilar
When the ground is covered with snow most of the year, it might be a good idea to plan for it. That's like asking why do they build surfboards? That's what boats are for.
@MrDneisingh No, its not. Its a C 303. Also made as 6x6. Civilian or military. With portal axles, 1: 1.94 ratio (about) in the ends.
You are right, all vehicles are pointless when we have 2 legs to get about on too.....
This is fair, were could you buy that machine?
its very strong
Where was it shot?
@rebel4iceni can't believe they said that... Germany..... Sweeds know how to get through snow that's for sure!
I want one of each!
@rebel4iceni ok tak men "ngt" betyder det noget?
@RoleTDI Yes. You really need fat tires with low pressure in snow. You dont wanna go down to the ground.
It´s MT:s on both vehicles. They are good enough for us.
If the snow is wet, you have traction. If not, you have at least enough to go forward in most of the cases.
Just need to put the Volvo axles with the geared hubs on the Bronko and watch how much better it goes!!
You mean the Volvo? This is a civilian C303. The military is named Tgb 11. Civilian has 12 V and always a winch. The military 24 V and no winch. They are even in 6-wheel versions. Short or long. C 306, Tgb 13, Tgb 20. C306 very rare.
How much bigger would tires need to be in order to not sink significantly in snow like that?
Snow batman does some intense videos like these
I know. Have seen some of them. Great videos.
rebel4iceni crawlfest and stranded is my favorite, those guys are hardcore
Yeah and there are 6-wheeelers too. But only one 8-wheeler were built.
@NarishmaJr Jo, de håller. har förresten bytt till tgb 20-diffar.
@RoleTDI
its sweden think about how deep the snow is
Hur mår diffarna av dom där däcken?
Where is subaru now??? under the snow?
@DCMA247 I have seen you guys at YT. Impressive!
that is one cool fuckin rig!!
It was not easy. Cutting up the wheel houses and a couple of new springs in front. (Rear I didn`t need it.) The springs were forced up about 3 inch in a shop. The rims were widened to 20 inch. @turfguy87 Might help but there is a lot of resistance in the snow. Try and find out.
Yes Right, I'd go across a field or lake in 20 to 30 inch's of snow in second gear low range on the floor boards, just hang on.
