  • The Tao Te Ching or The Way and its Characteristics is the primary text in Chinese religious history. Written by Lao Tzu roughly 600 years before the birth of Christ, the Tao endeavors to articulate the core beliefs that underpin both Taoism and Chinese Buddhism.
Second only to the Bible in its number of translations, the Tao's influence is hard to understate. A version of the text can be found in some form on every major continent and it has had a major mark particularly in the west. Though relatively short, this tome has inspired poets, artists, politicians and religious leaders alike with its direct language, practical advice and lyrical beauty. LearnOutLoud.com is excited to present this priceless wisdom for you on audio.
Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu, translated by James Legge, was published in 1891 and is in the public domain. This audio book was recorded by LearnOutLoud.com and is narrated by Phil Chirco. I could not disagree more. This is garbage. Save a life and find without fail,. Steven Miller's translation which seems to me when listening to or reading, being able to breathe after suffocating. Miraculous!

Legge is one of the worst translations available. It is Chinese which does not directly translate to English. Translators do their best, but they all vary.
Most translations seek to replicate the verbiage as good as possible.
Legge tried to rhyme for the ladies tea time or something. He didn’t focus on true translation. He cut corners to pick rhyming words. If you want fluff. This is fine.
If you want the Tao, put this translation on the bottom of the pile.

Weird Victorian style translation, not sure why there needs to be rhyme. The clarity of the message should be first, instead of a rhyme scheme
